View Full Version : Replacing existing clutch thermo fan with electric

Hi guys,
I have the TDV6 D3.
When accelerating away from lights or driving on hot days the fan roars and seems to slow acceleration.
Has anyone replaced the clutch system with an electric system? That way acceleration is not limited by the big fan winding up.
Thoughts?
Cheers!

I feel that the ECU would terribly miss the fan. I find it very reassuring when I hear it roar. It only does it as needed and then freewheels being variable and controlled by ECU.

I wouldn't, but it shouldn't really be too active just on a hot day, monitor your temps, you might be due for a decent coolant flush, external clean or thermostat.

It already has electric assistance and they only roar for a few mins if that.

I for one love the roar.
Would be wicked if I had a little momentary button on the dash to activate, as it makes the whole thing sound so much more butch!

I've noticed that normally the fan only fully locks up when my coolant temp hits 107degC. Until then I never hear it. Normally with no trailer attached my coolant temps never get that high. I'd suggest monitoring your temps (through OBD) and noting when the fan is kicking in as something may not be 100%

A simple electric fan can not move the sheer volume of air that the current offering does.
It will be a big step backwards.
The impression of the fan causing a huge slowing of the vehicle is just that, just an impression. The reality is more to do with fuelling strategies during high heat soak.

Thanks guys - jury is in - roar to stay.
It’s true - the roar does draw attention 😆.
Will have a look at a coolant flush and thermostat etc.
It just seems to roar from take-off for a short duration and then settles down quickly.
Cheers!!

You can do that, but it won't make any difference. The algorithm that controls the fan relies on a number of different inputs, not just coolant temp. On a warm day in Perth with the AC on it will pretty much do that after any idling at traffic lights. From the Manuel :
"The ECM determines engagement based on the coolant, charge air, ambient and transmission oil temperatures and the A/C pressure."
If I don't want it to roar and it's a stinking hot day, I just sit at the lights with the revs at about ~1500. Makes the A/C work better too!

I may just try that!! 😎😎
