View Full Version : Topping up the transmission

I know that when refilling the transmission we need an accomplice to go through he gears while we fill, to overflow. As there is nearly always a red drop to be seen underneath I thought I should check for a top up. Got the wife to go through the selections but when I undid the filler plug out gushed fluid. Am I doing something wrong? Thought I would check it as there is a harsh rattly sound when taking off until she changes up to second. Any ideas what is going on? Had this noise for a while bit it seems to be getting harsher. Otherwise the trans seems fine, nice smooth changes.
On a brighter note the barn door is now sweet and the passenger front window fixed. Another annoyance is the low fuel light coming on after about 300km, when I know the tank is more than half full. On a full tank the needle reisters just over ½ . I've always been able to drive 130 km before the needle drops on a full tank. I guess there must be a float attached to the pump in the tank. Likely it is leaking? If so, is it fixable or do I need a whole new expensive unit? Just put a couple of new tyres on her so I'd like to get a bit more kms before she goes.
Thanks people!

The float could be buggered. I think you'd notice a fuel leak. I wonder what could bend the float arm!?

Could over full be the cause of the issues you are experiencing? Try allowing it to drain out all the excess.

I assume you have the engine running when going through the gears.

No fuel leak apparent. Might have to have a look at the pump.

Overfull seems unlikely as I "thought" it was spot o when I serviced it before dragging the trailer sailer Horsham to Bowen in 2019. Since then I might have done 1000km light duties. I would have expected it to have leaked a bit since then. After all, it is a Land Rover[bigwhistle]

Yes, engine running when going through the gears (I forgot to mention that before)

I think I might try draining the XS as you suggest......engine running, going through the gears.

Hi Tinggu,

Do you know that the auto trans fluid is meant to be at a temperature of [B]37 degree Celsius when you check level or top up?
You will see this stamped on the underside of the auto trans sump.
37 degree C is only about the same as the temperature of your hand.

From my own experiences with this, I suspect that the ATF has a high thermal expansion co-efficient, so that the volume in the system increases greatly as it heats up.

I think you are overthinking this.
When I do it alone I go through the gears then under and finally top up with engine running.
The instructions AFAIR say that the fluid should flow out of the plug a bit with engine running.
The 37C probably refers to someone changing the fluid in the Arctic, because remember nearly all of these were sold somewhere in Europe.
I don't think the expansion is any different to any other oil.
I think the excess coming out if with engine stopped is from the cooler . that is why it is done with the engine running so the cooler is filled.
