View Full Version : Any hot tips while ive got my headliner out?

So i finally pulled the headliner out. Sick to death of looking at the sagging liner. Was a lot easier than i though. Hardest part was getting it out the back door.

Anyways, while i have the headliner out does anyone have any hot tips on jobs that can/should be done while i have the roof exposed? Run wiring for extra lighting, sound deadening etc etc.

What has everyone else done that required the roof lining to come off?

Cheers everyone

Put a later model key fob receiver in - if its possible to sync the later model with the BCU?
much easier to get fobs for the plastic headlight models.

Might be a good time to remove and reseal the alpine windows and check for rust.

Seals for the roof rails if you have them fitted.

Sound and heat insulation.
Will you need wiring in the future?

Seals for the roof rails if you have them fitted.Yeah they are still in place although it would be nice to **** them off since i have a full length roof rack now. I believe they require quite a large rubber grommet to seal?

Now would be a good time to do it, you'd need to hunt for a good blanking plug to seal it off though otherwise a high density closed cell foam sheet (ie 8mm wetsuit rubber) and cut new ones to suit.

Hi Shayne86 MKII posted this if you want to get rid of the rails

There are a few different tutorials online about removing the roof rails. You need to drop the sides of the head lining to access the bolts. I was given the run around trying to find grommets that fit into the holes left by the rails (35mm) but eventually found these ones from Rare Spares:

They are about $8 each. Its hard to get them into the holes given the large external diameter but it lets you fill it up with silicone. I haven't had any leaks yet, even with some really heavy recent storms.

Might be a good time to remove and reseal the alpine windows and check for rust. They are in surprisingly good condition. Not a drop of rust anywhere except on top of the front window on the driver's side (which i already knew of)

Every time I wash my Chawton White car, it looks like a zebra from the alpine window sealant. [bigsad]

I didn't replace the fabric on my Defender heading shell. Instead, I cleaned all the rotten foam of with one of these (https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-nylon-filament-wheel-brush/550790.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMItq6245fD9wIVxRwrCh2r 2AdQEAQYAyABEgKW6fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds), then painted it with low sheen acrylic paint matched to the colour of the sun visors. I'm very pleased with the result and many have made favourable comments. It gives a wipe-able surface.

The early 315 Mhz frequency is basically for this use, still used for remote controllers that are a lot less prone to interference. The later 433 Mhz (shared low power channel that anyone from hobbyist to commercial can use) that everything seems to be on these days cops a lot of interference and I had to sort out a situation for a client where a local ham operator was causing his home alarm and garage doors to operate erratically. His car is a late model but fob is 315 so was all good.

The BCU only gets a comms signal from the fob receiver so you can interchange no probs.

No probs getting 315 Mhz fobs

Actually this could be a great thing for those of us wanting to get the remote SLS Plip, the 315mhz ones are much cheaper if I remember rightly!

Interested, obviously the keys have to be replaced as well and programmed, is that all???

How about running some trailer 7 core cable (or 2 lots) to the roof console from one of the footwells so you can add switches etc later without messing with the headlining. in fact from your pics it looks like you can possibly pre run cables through those roof channels to the back for future use while at it.

I generally use 6 core 14/0.20 security cable, but decent 7 core trailer cable sounds like a much better idea!

Good question about what to put up there - i got some silver backed foam insulation from a car upholstery joint- it is lightweight but even tho it has glue backing the dude told me to use high quality spray adhesive onto the steel first then it dry then stick the insulation up there. i did it to a wagon and it is so quiet now when it rains. great for sleep quality on rainy nights and it is much cooler now on hot days.
Definitely seal up those roof rack holes when you pull them off (useless bloody things) but NEVER use silicone on a window on a car. Use proper windscreen sealant that stays flexible and yet still skins over.
Rust proof those alpine windows for sure. Wurth make a great product for any rust conversion that you do not need to wash off - just let it heal the rust for a few hours on a hot day then paint over it. I avoid wax or lanoline - that stuff attracts dust etc and then you get a build-up of muck that traps moisture.... Ballistol is great after you rust proof and paint over every possible area.
If you are putting lights up there have a think about red lights. they do not harm your night vision and are great for camping etc. White LEDs are vicious on the eyes. They do permanent damage.

Yes, my Audi has 2 little red LED lights in the roof console near the rear view mirror. they point directly at the centre console with a very soft and faint light to provide lighting at night on the centre console. When driving you cant actually see the LEDs or the light beam, just the very soft light on the centre console. It took me a while to work out how it all was lit up, and it’s actually really really good!

Have gone this way with the Receiver from the States as well with a locally sourced key, for an idea of the price of the receiver - the two together are about half the price of a 433Mhz Remote
