View Full Version : What LT tyres should I fit to my 2013 D4?

G'day All,

I've just bought a 2013 Discovery 4 with 134,000 km on the clock. Most impressed with it!

It's fitted with 19" Wranglers but I while I have nothing against Wranglers, I would prefer 18" all terrain LT tyres.

On my previous two Defenders I've run BFG and Coopers tyres. But the D4 has air suspension with which I have no experience and I'm wondering if this has any impact on what tyres work best for 4wd touring.

No longer into rock crawling or so called "technical" 4WD'ing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome,

Plenty of tyre threads on here to read. [emoji41]

You’ll need some 18s that can fit over the larger brakes of your model - Tuffant is your go there.

Then look at a 265/60-18 Falken WildPeak. Fantastic tyre.

I recently fitted GG AT3 255/60R19 on D4 rims to my L322. They're LI 113, not LT but seem to have a tougher case than the 255/55R19 version which is only LI 110. They have quite an open pattern for an AT that is performing well in sloppy mud. Tempe Tyres in Sydney import them and currently have stock.

I'd stick with the 19's if you don't really need the extra sidewall height.

I’ve been wondering when this size would turn up - excellent, will take a look next tyre change!

Tempe Tyres listed them as on-order shortly after I asked if they might add this D5/L405/L494 size to the list of other GG AT3 that they import. They provide the same sidewall height as 255/60R18. I swapped from 275/55R20 to get the same sidewall height and the higher load rating but 31" dia not 32". I bought 6.

I'm on my 3rd or 4th set of Bridgestone D697. Can't fault them! They have been perfect. I would\will buy another set unless someone can convince me there are better\newer tyres out there. I was almost convinced about the Falkens, but met a guy near Gibb River Rd that had a puncture. We were both travelling similar roads. Probably just luck of the draw, but!

I run BFG 265/65/18 on my D4, can't fault them, done heaps of different terrains from the Gibb and heaps of top end to SA beaches to Vic high county, performed well in all conditions and wearing well.
I think suitable pressures and driving to the conditions is more important than what factory they came from

Same also. Multiple sets and will fit again when required. Cape York, Anne Bedell, CSR, Simpson, GRR, Savannah Way and into Gulf country - had no drama with them.

Mate is having another set fitted next week to his D4. Think he said Bridgestone have $100 cash back at the moment. Don't know if that's just local to Perth or nation wide.

I am on my second set of Maxxis 980 255/55R19 tyres and cannot fault them for toughness and grip, but they are a little noisy on tarmac. How do the General Grabber AT3s perform for noise?

I noticed initially that I could hear the AT3s whereas I couldn't hear the previous Pirelli AT+ even though they were well worn, but I don't hear the AT3s now.
The AT3s perform much better in the mud on my driveway and muddy lane than the AT+ ever did, although they are slightly narrower with a square edge that bites through to harder ground.

I'm about 80% through my maxxis 980s and noticed a bit of understeer in the wet at roundabouts. My very first set of Cooper zeons did the same until it got dangerous with basically no grip in the wet. I reckon the rubber hardens after ~4years or so, and when the tread blocks wear down, they don't flex as they should, losing grip much to easily.

Looking at BT AT3 or pirelli ATs next.

I’ve had Maxxis 980’s found them noisey and I really just didn’t like them. Currently I’m running Maxxis 771 in LT285 60 18 (D4). Not a bad tire but I’m nearly ready for new tires and I’m thinking of going to Toyo next time. I’ve heard lots of good things about them. Have had Falken Wildpesks on the D2. Loved them, might consider them as an alternative

Same here, slight drone at around 70Km/hr in D4,but apart from that, had them on D4,D2's,now the LC,in over 22yrs,not one issue or failure.
One slow leak,a coach screw through the tread, didnt have it repaired as the tyre was worn out anyway, done well over 80K Km.

Nitto Ridge Grapplers are fantastic. Really impressed with them in LT 18 inch. Duratracs are excellent. I hear the Wildpeak are a great tyre also. Cheers

I’ve got pirelli AT plus, and coming from hankooks find them noisy. Seriously contemplating going to RT tyres next change, and having a set of 18s to play in the dirt with

Hi Tombie and or anyone with Wildpeaks on their D3/4,

a question if you don’t mind, how are the Wildpeaks noise wise on road? I am looking at also buying some 18’s for the D4 rather than staying with the 20’s. I have had two sets of Nitto Terra Grapplers and they have been as quite as most HT tyres for the first 25k or so before becoming noisy.

cheers,
Terry

Quiet. Very quiet.

I think it is fair to say that all agressive tyres likely get a little noisier as they harden up with some wear. I have about 12,000k on my Nitto Ridge Grapplers and they are as quiet as when I bought them. Will report back later. As for my Duratracs they have about 60,000k and have become noisy compared to when new. Cheers

Likewise for me, my 19" Duratracs have done just on 30,000 klms/ 2 years, and have become slightly noisier than when new, however definitely not irritating or annoying.... yet.
Without measuring, they appear to be around 50% worn, not more.

Quite happy with them and due to the perennial difficulties of 19" tyre choice will most likely run with them again.
Am reading everyone's comments with great interest.

I love my Duratrac. So much quieter than the Maxxis 980 and have been as good off-road. Tyres are more a personal choice than factual, but in 19” having tried most, I’m sticking.
