Hi folks, just wondering how many of you that have Pay TV, think it’s worth the money.

Yesterday I got a letter from my Pay TV supplier informing me, to quote “ Owing to world pressures, they were increasing the monthly rate by $3 “.

So I promptly rang them and removed the two Movie Channel Packages.

They raised my bill by $3 and I lowered it by $30, how clever are they.

Anyway, to my question, is there any programs that you consider worth the money you pay?

Its worth every cent to me, out on the farm the local service is wanting (although we now have digital top boxes on all the four TV's, and Austar boxes on three TV's).

I watch mainly Movie, History, and Motor Sport/Fishing occassionaly National Geo & Lifestyle Chanel. My wife the Cooking Chanel, TV1, & UK TV and shes a fanatic on the footy chanel...she gets the 106cm plasma for the footy, I then retreat to the den...set up like mini theatre, gotta do something on freezing days in Mullion Creek :D

I got Foxtel with the works and I consider it an entertainment expense and worth every cent..It keeps my two small children amused for hours with the wiggles and my History knowledge has increased tenfold also things like a 4x4 is born are really interesting,Sport the list go's on...:)

"world pressures" ????? What a lot of bunk. Simple, confusing, irrefutable blanket excuse to raise prices without declaring their real reasons. This is the reason why I will never give Foxtel or Austar my money. They can go jump. They do it every time one comes knocking at my door. The last Foxtel guy tried the "you're the only one in the street without a dish!" crap last time on my wife.

Down in Cooma - we'd have no choice once we build a house. Even then - until they get the "Sci-Fi" channel going here in Oz like they do in the USA they can go jump. We'll read a few books and listen to a nice record by the oil lamp instead.

I think it is worth every cent, i have been considering removing the movie channels but i still watch them regularly. I mostly watch the how to channel, the lifestyle channel, Discovery channel, history channel, discovery science, CI and a few of the other normal channels like the comedy channel and fox 8. I would have to say now i have had it o wouldnt consider canceling it as there are to many shows that i watch on Pay that dont appear on free to air. matt

I recently went back to pay TV after 4 years in the wilderness. My decision was not based on cost but a moral obligation to not support the open air channels stuffing reality TV down our throats.

Who in their right mind would like to see a bunch of retards sit around a house and do nothing or watch some d-grade celebrity try their hand at singing or ice skating. I cringe every time they advertise a new series of reality TV .. and seems to be the norm .. as soon as one ends the next one begins. It is an epidemic and all you blokes with kids should not allow them to watch this crud.

Get pay TV and let them watch Adventure 1, Discovery Channel or even FUEL TV .. at least its people and kids getting out there doing something "REAL"!

.. Soap Box now vacant .... ;) :D

I have to say, I like watching TV, and for the first 6 months, Pay TV was very entertaining.

BUT, after seeing everything, over and over again, time after time and the fact that Pay TV only put up a few hours of new material every month, it works out cheaper to go BUY the movies I want to see than to pay the monthly rate for seeing the same movies repeatedly, month after month and that’s only when they run movies on the movie channels.

I am so fed up with these crooks putting docos or foreign language films on channels I have paid for to watch MOVIES on.

The other thing that really gets me, is that after I PAY to watch this crap, I am then forced to watch more adds than they run on FREE to air TV. Another one of little Johnny Howard's benefits to the owners of Pay TV

The only good thing is that if you do miss something on one of the doco or info channels, you know that in about 3 to 6 months time, it will be repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated, and repeated.

The answer to your first question is Stacey. :D It drives me nuts, i would fork out the extra $20 bucks a month for a second box in the bedroom so i could watch pay in bed but its an extra expense i dont need at the moment.

I agree Henry its a load of crap, the only reality TV shows i ever watched were The Block and the Mole because both had a purpose and were interesting. The problem is now that once big brother finally ends in a week we have to put up with Australian Idol for 3 months.

Exactly my point.:)

I struggle to get out of house now and enjoy the vehicles we love to drive. I do not have the time to sit and watch something that I have seen years ago. Sure the Discovery channel is excellent but after that it's all crap. Not to mention the dollar value:o

Cheers.

I have 2 boxes one upstairs and one down stairs for the kiddies. I must admit I love my TV in general, and love my Austar :D . I also have a DVD card for the video shop whereby I pay $30 a mth for unlimited DVD's but can only have 4 out max at anyone time. I like Pay TV cause is there is nothing on free to air, there is always something on Pay. I like to watch the movie channels, the doco channels, cooking, some of the sports ones, if I miss the Super V8s, I get to watch it again, repeats of some of my fave shows ie Seinfield, the Law and Order series, Arena has some good shows on it, the comedy channel. I would prefer to be able to pick and choose on some, plus we also get one free Blockbuster a mth, so if I feel like watching something again which I tend to do, Ive got it there. Thats me covered  , also good for the kids ie Disney the other kiddie channels etc, again doco's, Animal Planet etc. Thats my 2 cents worth :)

When you can spend soooo much time on free to air interactive entertainment like
www.aulro.com (http://www.aulro.com)
where would you find the time to watch TV?

I have Foxtel digital and I could live without the movie channels (got the basic movie package). Mine remains most of the time on Fox Footy, Discovery or lifestyle channel. Fox classics has some good sitcoms from yesteryear and the occasional movie.

Like Drivesafe said, it would be cheaper to hire the DVD's you want to watch not the crap that you are given.

If you don't have it, save your money. But once you get it, you can't get rid of it and go back to 5 channels of bollocks:mad:

I agree and also with Drivesafe, the ads do my head in and make me want to pick uip the phone to Foxtel every 10 mins they are on to complain about me paying to watch ****. As I understand it the UK equvilant has zero ads on the pay channels because that is how they make their money.....by us paying. I have the big value package which is everything but movies....with 2 small kids and being a member of a very active 4wd club I never get the chance to watch movies anyway.

Bottom line, worth it but damned anoying how they structure the packages and subject you to adverts every 10 mins, plus repeat shows, plus advertise the shows they are about to repeat:eek:

Oh yes you can, had Foxtel twice since it came in, once right at the start and then again around 3 years ago. Ditched it both times, repeats and repeats and bloody ads. If I want to watch a movie either buy or hire the DVD.

We got foxtel's IQ package almost a year ago. then we move and needed it connected at the new place. 2mths later it was reconnected and they destroyed the lovely cream coloured carpet in the new place so as a result the mrs's let 'em have it. Result: Free carpet cleaning and 4mths free subscription, well over $500 worth. Ta Foxtel!!!

\Up until about 4 years ago, I was kicking around the idea of subscribing to Pay TV, but after my father-in-law, who had it on, complained that we didn’t have it when he visited, I decided to get it on.

As I posted, it was great for the first 6 months but the the repetition set in and not only has my father-in-law now dumped it, most of my friends have now unplugged as well.

I now manage to find ONE new doco a week, if I’m lucky and that makes for some expensive viewing.

The wife and daughter watch a few soaps but I thing they have just about had enough of the repeats as well.

My daughter is now buying the latest series of her favourite shows from the USA and if we didn’t have Pay TV it would still work out heaps cheaper to by ALL the shows she wants, than to pay for the right to be swamped with adds while trying to watch them on Pay TV.

Just out of curiosity, what is everybody's favourite program, from either Pay TV or Free to Air.

Cheers

I usually combine free to air TV with AULRO.

As I live alone the conversation opportunities are limited to the telephone (less than satisfying).

Reading is a great option but books are expensive.

Geez, open a can of worms, but you asked for it :D . Free to Air- faves would be ......... All the Law and Order series, Numbers, House, NCIS, Lost, ummm The OC :o , Rove Live, mainly Channel 10, and on the others some of the travel shows, oh and Bordeline Security, The Glass House. On Pay TV, I enjoy the cooking shows, so Rick Stein ( has a D90), Nigella ( grrrr), Neil Perry, also Nip Tuck, Entourage ( excellent show), Seinfield repeats and Law and Order repeats, Animal Planet, good ol Stevey boy by crikeys, the others I have a memory blank

Hmmmm....

Had it for years. I don't get the movies - I love movies, but they're sh*te and doesn't interest me.
Sport, Doco's, comedy, news it's all good.
Disney & kids channels for the little ones
MTV & trash for the older ones

There are too many ads, and too many repeats - but we are too small a market (country) otherwise there'd be no payTV here.

Is it worth it? Of course not....but then, neither is driving 600k a weekend and smashing up your car:twisted: and we still do that:D

Best shows on TV BLACK BOOKS

There is no real definitive answer to that question. It is worth it if you think it is, it is not worth it if you think it is not. We have all except the movie channels. This gives us a broad range of entertainment something for all. At times I would like movies at other times not. I will not pay $6 to watch a movie when they dictate and have to watch it by 6am the following morning. I mainly watch sport (footy, motor racing, motocross), docos, travel ans fox 8. Great for the kids. Missus gets to watch all those crappy shows she likes. Wish they would put the new episodes of red dwarf on at a decent hour. Do not know if we will keep it when we move, have to pay all over again.

Digital FTA is ok for picture quality.

I have always wanted pay TV just for the Discovery chanel so I could watch American Hotrod and all the similar shows. But now that Torrents are so easy to use it is better just to download these shows and watch them when you want.

Good point walker, and you are probably seeing them at least a year ahead of Pay Tv views, as most show are anything from a year to a few years behind and they have the gull to advertise these show as first run.

Good stuff. I personally got rid of TV totally. I decided it was a complete waste of time in 2003 and I went without TV for 3 year. It was great for my social relationships. I recently bought a cheap one cause the wife insisted. But we rarelly watch it.
THere are many other forms of entertainment other than TV, best of all all those involving sport and time with friends and family.

I would have told him to pay for it himself if he wanted it.

Me? I couldn't be bothered. I watch Discovery Channel in motels when I'm away but until I can buy the package I want, i.e., Discovery Channel and National Geographic channel only - no sport, no news, no movies, no MTV, no cartoons, etc., I'm not going to pay for them.

I have no interest in news, sport, MTV, cartoons, or movies so why pay for them?

I watch about 4 hours of TV per week. Dr Who, NCIS, Inspector Rex, Mythbusters or Top Gear, Unit One (not on at the moment).

For the past 3 weeks I've been in Coffs without TV and I hadn't missed it at all. I caught up on my reading.

Gotta say,

Although I have it, don't watch it a lot, and could and have lived without it before.
It is funny how as a society, we come home from work, (or dont go at all) turn the telly on, turn the brain off - & stare at this little or huge box for hours.

The aliens must think we're brainwashed, or addicted.
Hang on - we are
