Hi,

I have a 2011 Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 SE Auto 4x4 MY11

Im trying to figure out why im getting limp mode and car lowers to access height only when i drive for around 12km's or 15mins. It does not happen all week when i stop start to work and back (about 7kms) however when i get on the motorway and drive further it happens every time.

I thought it might have been the battery as ive only had the vehicle 4 months and cannot see how long the previous battery has been installed so replaced it, however it still happening.

Could it be a module that is heating up over a certain time/distance that triggers limp mode?

I have it booked in for a service and testing however mid-July is earliest.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated

First step is to read the error code(s). Until you have that information it’s all just guesswork.

Lowering is because there is a brake system fault.

Check the wiring harness that runs along the chassis behind the left front wheel to see if it has broken its retaining clip and has been rubbed by the inside edge of the tyre causing broken or shorted wires.

Without error codes it is just guessing. An educated guess from me is get your wheel alignment checked, if the steering angle is off, this faults the abs, esc and most other systems.

Thanks Kelvo. I figured that might be the only way to know.

I do have a cheap micky mouse ODB2 reader however think its probably not accurate?

These below is from the scanner:

Hi Graeme,

Thanks for this info, ill investivage this avenue. Strange the faults trigger while driving on the motorway without touching the brake but then again its a Land Rover so sounds like anythign is possible.

Hi Eric,

I wonder if you're onto something here as while driving straight the steering wheel is off center, the car does pull slightly to the left and i have noticed at times what feels like a wheel not balanced.

The below image is the car driving straight.

The brakes are also squeeking now so probably need new pads and discs.

Dude! That screws with all the systems. You must have the wheel pointing forward when driving forward or steering angle sensor will be flagging errors from the TCCM etc. That is likely your issue

Ok, so is this something wheel alignment guys can rectify of does this require adjusting the steering wheel? Im hoping this is starting to sounds like an easy cheap fix.... Fingers crossed !!!

To add to the above post, the steering angle sensor is attached to the ABS ecu hence a brake system fault, possibly real but with the steering wheel at that angle the fault is likely a plausibility fault as it doesn't compute to be turning left yet all wheels are travelling at much the same speed.

Yeah, any place that does alignments can sort that out. How long has it been like that and what and how hard did you hit to do it? That sort of thing doesn't move "unassisted".

If you can't get it sorted in a hurry as a temp band-aid you could re-calibrate the steering angle sensor to account for the on-the-**** wheel although you'd need a decent diagnostic tool

Don't muck around with recalibrating the steering sensor! The steering tie rods just need adjusting after the alignment has been done. Mine was out that much after I replaced front upperr and lower control arms. Drives like a pig until you get it realigned.

Please don't drive it like that for long, you'll need new tyres if you do.

As stated, it also mucks up the abs, esc and most other safety systems.

Mate you are a bloody legend!! I got the wheel alignment done and the fault codes have disappeared too!

Apparently the rear camber was very out, it had a reading of 18 and they normally see them about 3-5 so mine was well out I’m told.

I really appreciated everyone’s time taken to respond and help me get a win. What a great community this is.

Have a great week everyone.
