My Disco 4 (3litre) has a loud rythmic clicking coming from the engine on idle. It happens every week or so and disappears after a few minutes. On idle it sounds like a bit of the fan belt flapping around but doesn't correspond to engine speed when I hit the accelerator pedal. I'd say it's on a 1 second cycle. Any ideas what it could be?

It’s the viscous fan and it’s not considered a problem.

Thanks YM, that makes sense. I'll remove the shroud next time and check the noise against the rotational speed.

Mine did it once, the belt tensioner had failed, near snapped in half

Mine clicks all the time and has done it for all my ownership (6 years). Does it at start up. It’s different than your issue.

Watch the belt tensioner while the engine is idling to see if the tensioner jumps in time with the clicking.

On mine I unplugged the fan and noise went away. Plugged it back in and noise came back.
