View Full Version : HD flange cap won’t screw off

Anyone aware if there is any trick to removing the cap on the end of hd flange?

After a recent 4wd trip backlash and ‘clunk’ had increased. Decided to check out condition of the rear flanges, in particular rear passenger where the clunk is believed to originate. Long story short even with usual persuasion (heat, violence, lube, leverage) does not want to budge. Is there a way to remove the circlip from within the cap? Drivers side is equally solid. PO installed the flanges so I believe they are screw off (is there other types?)

The ones engraved with 'MD' must have better thread quality.

Very cosmopolitan set of wheel nuts you have there.

I had exactly the same problem with mine when I wanted to replace the brake discs. VERY tight!!!

I used a Milwaukee 1/2" drive impact rattle gun with a 52mm impact socket. Came off easily.

Would not budge with a breaker bar.

BTW, the Milwaukee is the single most useful tool I have ever purchased!!

Cheers,

Lionel

Maxi Drive can sometimes be just as difficult to remove.

I have also experienced very tight HTE caps ... I used a 52mm socket, 3/4" breaker bar - lengthened with about 1.2m of pipe, and an overweight middle aged man hanging off the end.

And they aren’t easy to find these days! :)

Worth having the right socket and means of taking the cap off (breaker bar or rattle gun), I believe greasing the splines is a routine maintenance item.

A big nut needs big torque. Or at least you can apply a lot of torque. A socket and long breaker/cheater combo should do it if you don’t have a rattle gun.
