Have been Googling everywhere to try and work out what to replace my tyres with; focus was to remain legal for insurance purposes; try and get a little more sidewall that was also a bit tougher than my current tyres (as I had damaged both front tyre sidewalls); not to have to modify anything and have a ride that was both more comfortable and preferably a bit quieter than my current Nitto Terra Grappler 275/45R20 tyres that were 6 years old with only about 3mm on the back and 5 mm on the fronts remaining.
Legally in NSW I was restricted to a maximum of 31 inch diameter and I believe a load rating of 106 and a speed rating of H. I was also looking for a tyre that the manufacturer approved for 9.5 inch wide rims. I did consider going to 19 inch diameter rims but the choice of tyre was very limited.
I ended up with a set of Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 265/50R20 in 111H; the diameter of these is 30.4 inches and approved rim width is 7.5 to 9.5 inches, so ticked all of the boxes from an insurance perspective.
Limiting factor with my vehicle was the diameter, as on full right lock in the front left wheel arch I now only have about 8mm clearance at the front on the left shoulder of the tyre, seems fine on compression and also access mode.
They are definitely quieter and it has removed most of the low speed jarring that I was having previously, ride quality was never an issue above 80 kph.
Handling seems great although have not tried an emergency brake stop.
Even though 10mm narrower than the previous tyre, they actually appear wider and look to bag out a bit better, I think they fill the wheel arches a bit better also. I have attached a few images including one of the vehicle at normal suspension height.
Tyres cost me $290 each, fitted, balanced and the old tyres disposed of. Tyres were not old stock from overseas as retailer confirmed they were purchased from Falken Australia and also supplied me with the production date prior to ordering, being the 47th week of 2021.
Hope this helps another member on their quest.
