The car started on the thirds try this morning. Normally it starts first time every time. Battery less than a year old. I do hear a click, so I'm thinking starter motor solenoid.. or something. Any ideas?

If hear ‘click’ followed by no corresponding response from the starter motor then the solenoid is the likely problem - it’s an easy DIY fix costing around $30.

You tube is handy, removing the starter motor does not seem that painful. Parts ordered.

I own a 99 d2 td5 and have been having starting issues for some time now. Just recently it was a case of definitely no go.The problem proved to be the fusible link feeding power to the starter solenoid making intermittent contact. The start relay contacts feed power via fl 12 on my circuit diagram, in reality it proved to be fl 13. The contacts of the fusible link were distorted and caused an intermittent fault .Not a problem to cure but a real brain teaser to diagnose.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that, The car started first time this morning and yesterday afternoon it made the sound of the starter motor engaging, then nothing. Could I have an easy fix? (Would I be so lucky)

Tonight difficulty starting.I was getting a definite click from under the bonnet, 5 or six tries until it started. I was hoping that the parts would get here before Saturday. Got home and the parts are here!
Thanks to british4wd land rover parts hobart (https://www.british4wd.com.au/) I ordered the parts yesterday and they arrived today. I reckon that is excellent from South Tassie!

many clicks before it started this morning, I only need three more starts until I can repair the starter motor.

I have found the solenoid contacts burn out after a couple of years .Easy to replace ,I bought the plunger and contacts locally, they also suit Toyota Denso starters.I found the part numbers on a forum ,sorry I can't tell you which one, A kit is available with all the spacers etc. from a number of traders on Ebay.

I've had the car for close to 7 years and 100k kms, a lot longer than a couple of years.

The motor brushes can get sticky and lose contact with the commutator, giving similar symptons. Try giving the starter motor a couple of light raps with a hammer if it plays up again.

Have had both D2's require the solenoid to be changed in the last couple of months, get it done fast, on the D2 got only two starts and on the D2a 4 to 6 starts when they started to stop starting, the coppers were totally shot and perished to nothing on both.
The top bolt is a bit of a bitch to get to and locate, the rest, easy peasy.

I did that 7 years ago. Worth a try but!
Plays up again? Since Tuesday it has been playing up.

Well today was a bit of a shamozzle. I was able to loosen one of the 13mm bolts, the lower one, could not shift the other. Decided that I will take the car in for repair somewhere. I re attached the electric cables and gave the key a turn. It started first time, 8 9 times in a row it started first time. I am wondering if the diesel from the leaky FPR may have caused this problem.

If the starter got a good drenching then yes / maybe the cause of your starting problem. If it were me though I’d not give up the opportunity to refurb the stater solenoid.

When I have 2 weeks off, I may revisit it. I will do the FPR then. It might solve it long term. BTW, the amount of oil and crud under Daisy aka old leaky is staggering. A lot of oil from the front RHS hub. Seal gone?, This is the hub I've replaced twice!!
