View Full Version : Noise When Turning Left

My 2.7 D3 is making a strange noise, when I turn the steering wheel to the left, even slightly. It's a whirring/grating sound and only occurs when in motion. I've crawled underneath and there's no evidence of leaks or anything damaged or loose. Right turn is fine.

I'm thinking steering box, but only occurring when moving seems odd to me.

You checked for bandicoots?

Seriously though, where is the noise coming from do you think?

No steering box in these so either the PS pump or the rack.

It sounds like RHS front. Because it only does it when moving, it's a bit hard to tell. The good woman did offer to drive the Landie whilst I was underneath, but I declined.

Yea, sorry. I meant pump. If it's only noisy in one direction, then I'm thinking the pump, assuming it is valve operated.

Could be as simple as old oil. Our very own sierrafery comments about that here:

She was probably singing the chorus of The Newcastle Song under her breath[bigwhistle]

You're likely on the money here!

Unbelievable! I ran into the local auto leckie and mentioned about the noise, in passing and he said I should check for a stone/small rock between the cover plate and the back of the brake rotor, using a torch and a screwdriver handle to tap the plate. Bingo!
He had the same issue on his Ranger. Took him ages to find it.
We have had our road surfaced and it is still very pebbly, so am assuming I picked one up from there.

As a bit of trivia, I found that a 50mm towball fits snugly into the rear chassis, jack hole and the concave top of my trolley jack!
