I know the engines both need timing belt changes, but is the oil pump update needed on the 3.0 engines or just the 2.7's?
I'm looking at a replacement for my D3 and I see lots of mention of belt changes, but no mention of oil pumps!
And yes, I'm coming around to diesel!!!!!

Only if high mileage or doing a rebuild.

You mean on the 3.0?

The 3.0 did not have the oil pump issue as it was resolved in the 2.7 run.
The only reason you need to replace the 3.0 oil pump is if it has low oil pressure, it has high mileage and or it is just prudent to change it. Some change with each cam belt change as the additional cost is relatively small with the front end pulled apart.

Correct, Garry expanded on it. 2.7 its a must do but 3.0 isnt as urgent.

There seems to be an even better oil pump out there, not sure if it is just the latest model or really is something special.

That is an aftermarket pump - with these I like to go genuine Ford for less than half the price of that one.

Given the oil pump (on a 2.7 at least) tends to be the most failure prone part, I think I'd be pretty wary of aftermarket.

latest FordMoCo has a 15mm impeller as opposed to 13.5mm. Might help the oil pressure being maintained a bit.
My old D3 is getting timing belts etc done and will get him to fit the new FordMoCo oil pump I got in from Poland. Donating the crank seal tool I had machined by a mate to him.

I’ve been down this road with my 2.7 TDI, so I can share what I learned. The timing belt change is a must on both the 2.7 and 3.0 engines, but the oil pump issue seems to be more common with the 2.7. When I replaced the timing belt on my 2.7, I went ahead and upgraded the oil pump since I’d heard about potential failures.

and for the 3.0, the oil pump doesn’t seem to have the same reputation for issues, so it might not be necessary unless there’s specific wear or you’re already tearing things apart. On another note, I replaced a couple of seals with hnbr (https://www.mantaline.com/capabilities/material-expertise/hnbr-rubber/) rubber ones during the process because they’re great for handling the heat and pressure in these engines.

When I bought my D3 as part of a preservice check the oil pump was replaced as well as the engine belts. All went well except for an early failure of the crankshaft seal. I subsequently bought the seal type recommended on this forum and paid particular attention to it's installation, making a special tool to set the seal position - no problems since.

Oil pump is only a requirement on early 2.7's. The later 2.7's in both the D3 and prior to MY12 D4 TDV6 range are factory fitted with the upgraded oil pump.

Only the very late D3 got the upgraded pump so its worth checking the serial number to confirm before dismissing it and having an engine failure.
My 07 built MY08 had the old pump and crapped itself.

Likewise my Sep 07 build MY08 had the old pump. I upgraded at the first belt change in 2013 then changed again at second belt change around 2021 to the latest and greatest for oil pressure peace of mind.
