I have had a go at refitting the cross member, as usual there is not a lot of room there. If you managed to spread the chassis rails with a jack, how did you do this? a section of 2x4? Where did you place the jack and the wood. The best place seems to be where the radius arm is bolted on I had a go there and the wood, was pushed downwards, away from the body.
Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

Have you tried using wedges instead of a jack?
Easier to position than a jack,

Any ideas or suggestions welcome. If you get a standard hydraulic bottle jack, pop out the oil fill plug, and overfill it laying on its side.. Then it will Jack out to full extension while laying horizontal.
It will need returning to the proper level afterwards.
You will be able to use anything of closely appropriate length to extend the rest of the way across.
I've never really had any issues at all tbh, but if you had to expand the width, that's how you can do it.
Pipe, wood etc etc, should be fine as long as of reasonable strength.

It has been a long time since I have done it, so don't remember exactly where I used it, but I did use a bottle jack and a piece of wood cut to length.
I would have placed it as close as practical to where the cross piece goes.
