Hi
Why can't LR source 1 simple large diesel motor for the defender, without all. the electronic crap.?? Surely theirs something out there eg, isuzu 6cyl turbo ,They must meet required emissoin laws ,all the new trucks running around. My mates td5 in his defender which is only 6mths old is giving him niggly probs all the time. He has the chits good and proper, because his neighbour has a 110 county with the 4bd1 Isuzu & its just clocked up 550, 000 kms and it has not had a spanner on it!!. Landrover started off right with those models, where have they lost the plot??.;)  :D

Jokeing aside . The army in the Uk still get defenders with the 300 TDi engine as they need them to be able to be fixed in the middle of nowhere. BTW there 300 tdis are tuned up by quite a bit too. No too uncommon to be over taken by a 110 army wolf doing 160kph plus. Land rover had to turn it down a bit after the squaddies kept rolling them. After all before that they have defedners with the 2.5 N/A in them
But were a not allowed to buy a 300 TDi new as they are not allowed on the road and don't poass the emissions. But the army can have them:mad:

what.....only two problems in six months....?
he should take it back...... :D
do you know if he is using the right fuel...?
some servos sell biodiesel without you knowing.....unless you check the colour of it as you are pumping it.....
this may cause damage to the fuel system.....or it may just be a myth to keep up the sales of dinodiesel.....
what was wrong with the computer......and its better to have all the problems while its still under warranty.....

Not sure what was up with the computer, he just told me the thing stopped dead in aline of traffic, so he got it towed to the dealer who he bought it off , Newcastle area nsw. He did state that the dealership (Can't think of their name) had been very good about the whole thing, so they should. Not sure about the fuel thing , will find out more tomorrow:D

Hmm, I have been reading practically all the posts here on these forums for quite a while now, I don't say much, 'cause that's the kind of a man I am, but I must say this,
my 2003 'fender xtreme has now clocked up 80k and it has not missed a beat so far.........
I get my fuel either from Shell or MOBIL, I found these to be "clean" enough for me through the process of trial and error....I will NEVER get my fuel from SAFEWAY servos.....I don't care who says what, I have burnt out two fuel pumps so far...one on a Mazda 626 and one on a Subaru Outback, their fuel is rubbish, the Missus is banned from their servos.....

I have now done over 400,000km in my County, getting fuel from whatever source is available, throughout Australia, including Safeway and even drummed fuel of very dubious quality - and the only time the engine has ever missed a beat was the occasions when I have run a tank dry. It simply does not worry much about the fuel quality! Although better quality fuel probably extends the life of the pump and injectors, 400,000kms is a reasonable life anyway. If I get dirty fuel, I simply have to change the filters more often - probably change them more often than needed anyway. The question in this thread is whether the TD5 where you have to worry about fuel quality (etc) an improvement?

There ARE mechanical injection, simple to work on, NO computer emissions approved diesel engines out there :)
The HS2.8 is euro 2 emissions compliant (OK not good for 2006 but was fine for a long time after LR went electronic)
Real world was LR wanted an electronic engine to "keep up with the Jones (beemers??)"
My HS2.8 (basically newer & better 300Tdi) pulls like a train (better than the wife's 4.6RR  ) and only needs 1 power wire to the fuel shut off solenoid to run :D (if you got desperate you could pull off the solenoid and run with ZERO power (yes take the battery out & disconnect the alternator))
so if /when you crack the sh*ts enough with the Td5 pull it out and convert back to a HS2.8 :D
It'll run on veggie oil or anything else diesel like, (like john said worst is a few filter changes), & go for hundreds of thousands of kms with nothing but oil changes,

The factory that is making the 300TDi is going to stop making them soon, no longer viable. So Land Rovers in South Africa that have been still getting the TDi will have to move to TD5 aswell.

Hi all
On LR Problems,,, my 2003 Td5 Defender has done 99500 kms which I have owned from new. In that time it has had the Air conditioning replaced, The radiator replaced, the gear box rear seal replaced twice and new hand brake brake linings, rear stop/tail lamp terminals rusted away also replaced, Auto door locking problems repaired, some valve assosiated with the turbo failed so replaced, battery failed so replaced, and may other small items all repaired. Now the Td5 motor has loss power. Landrover has had my defender for 6 weeks, they tell me that they have checked and tried many components BUT still unable to find the cause for the loss of power and yes, I have only used brand name diesel fuel, NO Biodiesel.
To there credit LR have given me a loan car while they are trying to solve the problem.
I think my defender was built on a friday.
Happy off roading regards Mike

4BD1 were arguably the best engine ever factory fitted to a land rover.
The 6 cyl isuzu's are probably too much engine for a landy. Some of the 4HE1 variants (4cyl 4.8 litre) would be too much for rover drive trains.

Bush 65 is on the money.
The Isuzu was the greatest engine LR ever fitted, it's so good that Isuzu don't even make replacement engine parts for them any more, as it was not uncommon for an engine to do in excess of a million km before requiring a rebuild:o . A guy I talked to in melbourne said that they just rebuilt the injectors at the 500k mark as that was all that the engine required when he pulled his down.
Sorry I am a little biased.....do love the Isuzu's

The Army Isuzu engines is outstanding I have driven them things literally all over this country and only checked the oil and water, from sun up till through the night sometines 24 -36hrs straight over all sorts of shi-t terrain , under water almost, freezing cold to scorching desert heat and I have never had one stop on me for anything other than a flat tyre or a bent steering rod. If I had a choice my Fender would have a N/A Isuzu motor as if I wanted speed I would get a sports car.
I'm glad I have retired now as it would be to tempting for me to play swapzies with L/R gear;)

The RR conversion is the slowest thing I have ever done by far, I haven't been able to touch it for 8 weeks or so while I wait for the adaptor plate to be made, Its driving me crazy and the wife is ready to kill me (it's her car and she's been downgraded to the ute for the last 3 mths)
The adaptor plate "prototype / sample " I have been promised by the end of this week (hopeful but not holding my breath)
so all being well we'll be underway again next week (fingers crossed)
