Have now changed housing refilled. Sorry to say, but the dealer is correct. You could get the head gaskets done on your engine, but the labour costs would bring you to about the same money. The engine needs to be removed either way you go. Not having the temp gauge rise is normal. It's not a Land Rover thing. When they are not in coolant, they don't read correctly. You could shop around, and you might find a cheaper price to install a new engine. I have an engine guard temperature monitor on every car I own to monitor overheating.

Head gaskets can be done with engine in situ, another cheaper option is to get a territory motor which can be bought for 2-5k plus fitting.
Get a quote from an indy not an LR dealer.

There is no cheap option for a Discovery 3 / 4 with a failed / overheated engine.

*$13K price is likely a Territory engine, its cheaper than I do them for. People often fail to account for labour and the amount of work involved.
*Also not many low mileage engines around now.
*lucky it's not a 3.0 otherwise you might as well sell it to a wrecker.

Other things to think about...
*Has the top coolant outlet ever been changed?
*Has the timing belt recently been replaced?
*If so why didnt they change out the top coolant outlet at the same time?

Even at $13K,is it really worth repairing?

Probably not,and no doubt at that age,the vehicle will need other repairs at the same time.
