Hi all,

2009 disc 3 , v6 petrol

I am trying to take off this stupid fan so I can get to the belt and replace it.

I am seeing on youtube that to take off the clutch fan belt, when standing Infront of the car, turn the 36 mm tool to the right.

Is this correct?

I am using the pray bar and land rover 36 mm tool and it is not budging, I cannot believe it is that tight.

The one my discovery 2 comes off like a butter.

I have feeling I might also have to by this to attach 2 bolts on the water pump pulley ?

Need advise asap.

Thank you.

Try a couple of sharp strikes on the spanner with a hammer…

Shock often gets it loose.

The fan on a v6 petrol is a right-hand thread. Diesel and v8 left-hand thread.
You will need to go lefty loosey

They can get tight- especially if some goose has put loctite on them! To ensure you're turning the right way (and I don't know which way is right for your engine) make sure you're turning the fan (nut) in the same direction it turns when running- you can tell by looking at the way the blades are oriented. It varies with different engines and belt arrangements. To hold the pulley, any homebrew arrangement of flat bar with holes that fit over the heads of two of the bolts. See here for some examples examples TDV6 fan pulley holder tool (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/179001-tdv6-fan-pulley-holder-tool.html) it doesn't have to be pretty, just has to somehow capture 2 bolt heads and have a handle. Mine is exceedingly ugly and took less time to make than to post this reply.

Thank you all..

I've been swearing every English engineer that ever lived... did my head in.

So you are saying I should be turning the 36 mm spanner tool to the left of me when standing Infront of the car?

See, v6 different to v8 and diesel engine...

Thanks Pod I will look at that too..

I will post you the pic of the fan .. I somehow have a feeling the 36 mm should be turned to the left..

Yes if a rh thread, then turn to the left to undo

i made a bracket that uses 2 of the pulley bolts and then rests against the engine to hold it while undoing the fan- TDV6 that is but same principle will work.

Hi all,

Please see pic below. Taken from the front of the car

I am not attempting to do this unless I am 100% sure which way to turn the 36 mm.

What a bastard , something so simple..

The blades pull air by turning anti-clockwise, so unscrew in the same direction, ie turn the spanner to the left from the top.

Notwithstanding that you've been trying in the wrong direction, it will probably still loosen with only a gentle tap.

It’s very easy to determine the direction to undo the fan, it doesn’t matter if it’s diesel, petrol, serpentine belt, or V-belt.

The fan always undoes in the same direction that the fan rotates.

Think about it and you will understand why.

THANK YOU ALL!

job done, I went anti clockwise, and it only needed a gentle tap by a heavy hammer, and it came off..

What a nightmare when you don't know..

I've fitted a new idle pulley, the old one was making noise and once out, I could hear something lose on inside of it.. lucky i've noticed it in time.

New belt, all good drives good and cannot hear that noise from pulley again.

Thank you again!

Now experienced, you'll never again try so hard or for so long before trying the other direction.

I've only just read this thread and it reminds me of when I had a problem on a 300Tdi Defender moons ago. I took it to a recommended independent 'expert' in Osborne Park and when I got it back I opened the bonnet for a look and was shocked to see big chisel marks in the fan nut!
Back to the 'expert' and he mumbled some rubbish about me not knowing what I was talking about and this was necessary to remove the fan etc etc. but I got a new hub out of them (after a very nasty argument) and I replaced it as I wasn't having him touch my car ever again.

Well unless you know you are blind like I was :) Thanks to the gents it saved me a trip to mechanic , $ and I learned a good lesson too.

Our old D2 used to be serviced my "experts" my wife used to take it to mechanics all the time, until I saw they were charging her $300 bucks to change the oil...

One of them even took her car to do deliveries in the area until we noted the km... Crazy. You have to learn and do as much as you can yourself, just like anything in life.
