View Full Version : Fuel out of the top of the Carb

I recently replaced the head gasket on my 2.25lt, once it was back together, I fired it up. Well at least i tried, the engine is now really rough, i need full throttle just to idle and the is a jet of air/fuel coming out of the top of the carb

What i have try since:
- checked and adjusted the timing
- replaced the plugs and leads
- cleaned the carb out (on the bench), checked the float and float height, visually checked the jets i could find.
- checked the rockers are moving with the rocker cover off and the hand crank.

Where to next???

BTW - should i get a shock when adjusting the distributor?

No, definitely not.. Check you have all your earth leads connected properly ( you may have disconnected one or more taking the head off) and also check the condensor. Does your car have a ballast resistor?

The fuel issue, looks more like a stuck valve to me, or a timing misfire. You say the valves and rockers are moving when you turn it by hand? Go over the clearances again. I reckon you might have an inlet too tight.

Thought for a second you had leads one and two reversed, but then I remembered Series dizzies rotate anti clockwise.... don't they? But, easiest check, are the leads all in the right spots? I see you labelled them, so they probably are, but it's a very easy mistake to make.

Thinking more about this. The fact you are getting a belt off the dizzie makes me say to check the cap for cracks or traces inside ( or outside I guess if you're getting zapped, hint, look at it running in the dark), they look like carbon lines, cos the spark could be finding its way to earth that way. Can cause all sorts of timing issues. Are the new leads wire or carbon core?

Oh, and maybe move or reroute that king lead away from the rocker cover. Might not be a problem now but it will be at some point. Or use a separator, Not this exact thing (https://aeroflowperformance.com/af64-9704blk-black-4-wire-lead-separator), but you get the idea. The lead will rub through otherwise.

Reviewing and replacing my earth straps is on the list, so it looks like it's moved up the list!!

Stuck valve! I'll check the valve clearances. If the valve is stuck and there isn't a "tight" clearance what is the best way to confirm a stuck valve? if its only a little struck open. Compression test?

I'm confidence the leads are in the right sequence. Oh and I was aware if the short lead! It was the one I had in the box of stuff! I've since replaced it with the old one!

I'll let you know how I go!

Well, this morning I manage to get a little time on the Landy.



Spark Plugs out
Rocker Cover off


I noticed that the middle support on the rockers was not seated correctly (small round locating support on the cylinder heads that locates the middle of the rocker assembly), the rocker assembly was sitting high on this. So Cylinder head bolts and rocker bolts loosed and re-adjusted the assembly. Re-torqued all bolts.

Tappet adjustment next, using the crank handle I worked through each on the tappet, adjusting them to .010". Wow they were out by long way!

One question - intake tappet on cycinder, i ran out of adjustment and still couldn't get the feeler gauge through the gap? What is going on here?

Anyway, I re-assembled the rocker and plugs and fired her up. Success! While I having taken her out for a spin around town yet. The engine is idling and the gas out of the carby has gone!

I would double check the push rod is fitting correctly into the Tappet slide.
I had a mate a couple of years ago had a similar issue.
All ran well until the Rod broke the side out of the slide.

What hillbilly said. Pushrod not properly located in the bronze follower. It will eventually jump the right way or the wrong way. Guess. Only takes a few minutes to check.

Just re checked after a short run of the engine and you are both right. Easy to fix, a lot less noise!

The engine itself is running the beat it has since I bought it!
