I have a 2010 D4 and my battery positive terminal can't be tightened any more.
I've done some adjustments to it to get it to hold but I don't trust that it wont break somewhere 'back of beyond.
Has anyone found a suitable replacement, short of a complete harness, or a work around with available items.

Regards
Trevor

What the heck happened that it cannot be tightened? Is it buggered or is the battery terminal worn and undersized?

Nut or bolt stripped?

Nut or bolt stripped?

I put a longer bolt in mine, just ground down the sides of a standard bolt so that it fits- job done.

Nothing is broken...yet. It's just that the cone can't pull down any further. Maybe the battery terminal is worn. I've ordered some shims and will see how they go.

I am really after some ideas on how to replace the connector with something more readily available incase a problem occurs out in the boondocks.

Replacing the connector would mean modifying the harness - I wouldn't do that.

So the terminal of the battery is too thin/small for the connector to grip? How strange.

Maybe you could use a sleeve/shim similar to this:

Or replace the battery :)

EDIT: snap just read that you ordered shims [bighmmm]

Oh well, I learned something. Never seen those before. Might be a solution to a similar problem on my D2.

Those packers might be a bit on the thick side.

Try a bit of copper sheet remade from some copper pipe, or a bit of metal from a tin can (with the paint removed - think sandpaper), or do the same with a soda can. Although it is aluminium it can still be fashioned to increase the clamping pressure on one side while allowing the clamp itself to mate with the post on the other.

It only needs to be there until a new battery is required.

I have even seen a self tapping screw inserted between the clamp and the post. The post is of softer material so the screw hardly touched the clamp.

I've used shim brass in the past. I would need to see those packers in the flesh.

I'll admit that I too thought of modifying the battery post wiring as my back up battery is an Optima Yellow Top, but due to the L-shape of the D3 +ve cable terminal it won't fit, however I bought one of these instead...... I’ve previously found that giving the cable terminal a good tap down with a hammer and blunt object when loose gets the cable terminal further down onto the battery terminal which is tapered, thus allowing it to be tightened correctly. Worth considering if you haven’t tried it

Or lever it open with a screwdriver.
