ECU programming/marrying

Have spent a fair few hours digging through the web trying to find exactly what I would need to marry ECUs, with all the key calculators?

Can any GAP or Nanocom tools do this? Any others?

So far, I'm under the impression that SDD with an online subscription to Topix is the only method (ridiculously expensive). I did find some Russians on Telegram offering to set up SDD with Topix server access for a couple hundred dollars, but before I put my favourite pirate eye patch on, I would like to explore more legal options if any are available at less than $3000...

The reason I need this is to change the transmission control module of a Disco 4. I also have an L494 which I suspect will need things changed out eventually, so would like to avoid VIN locked systems.

I would welcome any insights people can provide.

I think it's important to clarify precisely what you mean by "marry" in this context. If it's a case of programming an "identical" second hand ECU to match the car then potentially. If it's trying to do something that didn't come out of the factory then it's a bit more complex.

Yes, I would want to program an identical ECU to match. I have done some more digging and believe a Launch X431 Pad V Elite can do what I want, for my budget, without a VIN lock or similar restrictions (if anyone believes I am mistaken, please let me know).

That said, if I were to use a non-identical item (again, how "identical" do the ECUs need to be?), would the SDD/Topix software be the only option?

When it comes to 6HP or 8HP TCMs in Land Rovers, they only need the correct software loaded to match the vehicle spec.

So if you have a 2010 3.0 D4, and you swap a used transmission from a 2010-2012 3.0 D4, it’ll just work.

If it came out of a Range Rover Sport, then it’ll need programming.

The VIN in the module doesn’t matter, and anyway the VIN can’t be changed with regular tools.

The transmission software variant is based on the model and engine type, and power output.

Example the later 8HP in the Aussie 3.0 D4’s, that is 2013MY 520Nm or 600Nm, and 2014-2016MY 520Nm or 600Nm, so four different versions.

So let me get this straight, so I could fit any zf6hp26 box from a tdv6 D3 and it will work without any programming ?
That goes against everything I have read about them over the last 7 years.
