Hi all I am looking at buying a D4 and was wondering what the diesel was like as a motor in the D4s and what to look for when looking at a D4.

More info than you will ever need if you do a search
great engine, smooth, quiet, powerful and pretty economical
down sideways s crap crank and bearing design so they can randomly die a horrible death and leave you with a repair bill worth as much as or depending on condition and KM more than the value of the car

It's character building.

So, I have read that the 6 cylinder has a habit of spinning big end bearings is this the 2.7 or the 3 liter or do both have this habit.

It also has 2 turbos to fail and they routinely crack inlet manifolds.
That's only my thoughts on it.

Get the SCV6 if you can find one, supercharged V6 petrol. No known crank issues.
Or, find a D4 with a lunched engine, it will be dirt cheap. Then shoe horn the RRS TTSV8 into it. It's been done before.

or find a working D4, drive it and enjoy it, knowing if the worst thing happens and your engine implodes, you have a wonderful hobby project to start on

Keep an eye in the for sale section. I have just taken delivery of a D5 and the 2012 2.7 will be for sale 164,000 ks.

What It's Like Owning a Diesel Land Rover LR3 for Two Years (https://www.motor1.com/news/752985/land-rover-lr3-diesel-owner-review/)
Here's an article about a LR3 a.k.a D3 but most of this applies to a D4 too.
Useful tip about bridging the oil temperature sensor when the car became undrivable, a fault I hadn't heard of before.
