Front wheel bearings tomorrow :mad: ...what size is the hub nut tube spanner... 52mm?...is this likely to be found at Super Crap?

Only in a set. They were flat out finding a 32 for me.

2 1/16" I believe, or to metricise it, 52mm. Get a tube spanner rather than a socket as it is possible the socket may not be deep enough - and the tube should be around $5 where a socket that size is likely to be close to $100. Supercheap may have one, Repco should have - ask for a hub nut spanner for a Landcruiser not a Landrover. They are both the same, having both copied Jeep. Failing Repco any of the Landrover specialists should have one as should any of the offroad specialists. One of mine came from Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne, the other from a clearing sale. Your location is not very helpful, so can't be more specific.

Why does everyone think they are tha same size as tojo when they're not, just use some stihlsons with a bit of discretion and you'll be fine

I'll give the multigrips a go. I would want my LR tainted by association with anything Toyota..:mad: ;)
Saves a trip to my closest LR bits purveyor Graeme Cooper.

It may depend on the model - certainly the same as Hilux - I lent mine to my neighbour for his a couple of months ago.

They are Land Rover hub spanners. I keep one in the toll kit at all times
Next question is does anyone want one. I can get them sent over pretty cheap from the Uk. Should be about $20 each. Save any problems when you come to do a wheel bearing again

Ali, they're generally available from any tool/bearing shop. I just use my old Jeep 2 1/16" tube spanner.
FWIW, Land Cruisers are 54mm, and GQ Patrols are 53mm (GU's use a pin tool :mad:)

Yep, got one in my toolbox, i just got alan at british 4wd to add one to the list when i ordered the bits to do my rear wheel bearings and oil seals, well worth the money, makes the job heaps easier. Matt

Well the one i have that was origanally bought for an 82 hilux and has been used on a multitude of 40s and 70s which fits the above perfectly, DOES fit the Rover bub nuts BUT is an extremely LOOSE fit, although being a hex headed tube socket, it'd be unlikely to damage the nut BUT if you like punching the concrete/wheel hub/studs/anything else when you slip, its for you;)

I made one. Small exercise with lathe and milling machine. No, I won't make you one. Would be ok for a small production run with a CNC centre but takes too long to be commercially viable with normal machine tools. My time however is charged out to me at mate's rates.

Well I relented and bought one today from Graeme Cooper...it certainly is easier to feel the torque than with multigrips.
Wheel bearings changed :D
Also discovered that that piece of Spaghetti No.7 called the standard tie rod has a slight bend in it :mad: . So the new HD tie rod goes in tomorrow.

Mal. Leslie of S.G. Leslie & Sons, Melbourne will make you HD steering rods from chrome moly or HT steel. Or, I can sell you the 11/16" x 20 TPI LH & RH taps and you can make your own.

there is no torque to feel.....you simply remove the freeplay from the bearing.....
the the outer nut ...being a locknut....gets done up as tight as you can.......

I've already had the Steering Damper relocated to the drag link courtesy of Disco White so the changeover is cheaper for the tie rod job:
HD Tie Rod (I think it is a Les Richmond model)...$215
LH thread tie rod end..$39
but the shock of the day was the Indicator Cancelling Cam $75 :eek:

What do you mean you can't feel the torque?
Inner nut as tight as you can (61 lb/ft) to remove the free play back off and then tighten it (4 lb/ft) which means turn the spanner with greasy hands without a lever through the hole. Put on the washer and...then screw on the lock nut and tighten as hard as you can, when your eyes start bulging in their sockets that is 100 lb/ft.

Next time I have to undo a butchered hub nut that I can't get the spanner on - I'll think of you (fondly?). Especially if the bearing is suffering from little bits of nut in the grease.
