Reading threads about jobs that are easier with the body off, I wonder if anyone who doesn't have a 2post hoist has an alternative method for body removal. I'm thinking that maybe a couple of timbers passed through the body's open windows with the car raised on a 4 post hoist and then lowering the chassis away might work. the concern is potential damage to the body shell with the weight of the body taken mainly on the roof structure.

Any thoughts on this?

In the wide world of YouTube I saw some guys do this in UK with big fork lift through the open side windows. It worked. I don't think it was a pride and joy car though.

I don't think it was a pride and joy car though.Especially not after doing that to it!

Hopefully they wound the windows down first.

I doubt the door window frames would like the treatment.

With chassis disconnected it's probably reasonably light. Obviously a lot of padding on the tinges is preferable.

There are some very dodgy looking videos! I think that I'll keep the body attached or buy a proper hoist rather than risking life and limb or damage to the car.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

make no mistake "just" the body is heavy, must be a good ton.

Soooo the better way of doing it if you dont have a hoist but somehow have a forklift.
When I fitted the body back on my mates D3 I used the forklift as my hoist was busy. Lifted the body underneath using common fork extensions (steel square tube that slips over the forks). placed in position and then had blocks front and rear to lower onto then remove forks, then lifted each end removed blocks, lowered in position. Was a fair bit of messing around but little chance of damage to the body, the forklift was a 1.5 ton and that was i'd say close to its limit as its a fair weight out from the forklift.
