View Full Version : EPC and Win XP

Hi all computer specialists!
After plenty of grief with my machine at home (no, not the Landrover this time) I have it back running, this time on WinXP (don't ask how and why, just take it as it is, okay).
My question now, before I attempt something silly:
Does the EPC run under XP? And if, how, and what is the actual procedure to get it running? Probably not simply start it up and relax.
Thanks in advance, mates!
Cheers

Yes. I have a different version to the one in the Market area on this forum and it works on XP. If you have any issues in the properties of the desktop shortcut for it change the compatibility back to an early version of Windows

[normal info on getting it going]
How to install Electronic Parts Catalogue
1. Click the "Start" Button, then "RUN"
2. Type in D:\EPC\setup.exe then click "OK" (where "D" is the letter
of your CD ROM drive
3. Follow the on-screen prompts
4. When asked for the type of setup, choose EPC Server Version
(includes Client Version)
5. When asked for Dealership Type. choose "Land Rover"
6. Re-start the PC
7. Upon re-start, you'll probably get an error message - just ignore
it.
8. Click the "Start" Button, then "Run"
9. Type in D:\AKM100~1\setup.exe then click "OK" (where "D" is the
letter of your CD ROM Drive)
10. Do an oil change, re-build gearbox etc., as the install takes a
long time!
11. Re-start the PC
How to install Electronic Parts Catalogue 2002 Update
Make sure the first EPC is installed
This Disc should Autorun, and like the first one the install takes a
long time!
Getting EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) Software Running on WIN2000 & XP
Follow these simple steps.
First you need to disable the ORBIX daemon that is running.
Go into Services, locate Orbix Daemon.
The Service Status will be shown as started – select STOP
Once it has stopped, change the start-up type to Manual or Disabled.
You will then require starting the alternate Orbix daemon.
It is located in C:\IONA\ORBIX_2.3C\BIN folder.
Double click on ORBIXDW.EXE
Then you need to start the database server.
It is located in C:\UNICAT\EPC\SOFTWARE\SCRIPTS
Double click on StartUnicatDB
Both of the above must remain running while you are using EPC!!!
Now you can simply run the EPC from the desktop icon the installation created.
Additional Information.
When you attempt to stop the orbixds daemon, you will get an error message,
ignore it. If you have firewall software, such as ZoneAlarm running, it will ask
to allow applications to access the internet, this is ok, it will also ask to
have some application running as a server, this is ok as well.
[second info on getting it going]
This is how I installed EPC to my laptop, which is running XP Pro
Start the Program Compatibility Wizard [PCW] Click 'next'
Select 'I want to locate the program manually’ Click 'next' Click ‘Browse’
Under CD drive, find ‘EPC’ folder, double click it,
Select ‘SETUP’ then click ‘open’
This will enter it into the long box, Click ‘next’
Select run under Win95 Click 'next'
Installation should now begin.
Follow on screen instructions
When asked select 'EPC server version includes client version'
when asked for dealership type enter 'Land Rover'
reboot PC,
ignore any error message, [just click the OK box to make it go away]
Re-start PCW and do a similar operation for the 'AKM100’ select ‘SETUP’ this will enter it into the long box, click ‘next’
Select to run under Win95
this should now start it's installation, follow the on screen instructions
if you want to install the 2002 update CD as well use the PCW to install this, using the method above find ‘SETUP’ and choose Win95
Follow on screen instructions
If you have Norton 2003 or 2004 Internet security installed
Open ‘Personal Firewall’ then ‘Configure’
Tick ‘automatic program control’ box Click ‘add’
Select your CD drive ‘look in’ at top of page
Double click ‘Unicat’ folder Double click ‘Epc’ folder
Double click ‘Software’folder Double click ‘Bin’ folder
Double click ‘Server’ folder Select ‘Unifatfat’ Click ‘Open’
When prompted by Norton select ‘Permit All’ then click ‘OK’ then close Norton
Repeat above sequence But double click the ‘Client’ folder & select ‘Unicat’ then click ‘Open’
When prompted by Norton select ‘Permit All’ then click ‘OK’ & Close Norton
at this point I rebooted my laptop.
When all is ready double click the EPC grey folder on your desktop and you should [as I can] use it as if it was on a Win95 or 98 PC,

Thanks, inc, your advice saved my day. Although I had to use Win98 in the Compatibility Wizard as the Win95 choice only produced error messages for some peculiar reason. Anyway, it's working now and I truly hope i will stay that way.
Cheers and thanks again!

When the time is ripe, mate, hopefully sooner rather than later. We are still working on it. Have been in negotiations with the AMAQ over the last year or so who were very interested and keen to get me back over. Trouble only is, the DIMIA is a completely different issue and not at all interested in supporting neither us nor the AMAQ, so the visa-options left for us were not acceptable to us at all. I don't want to get ripped off again. The AMAQ-people are very understanding and looking to bend the DIMIA, or at least, finding a suitable compromise.
Bugger the computer as all my correspondence with them has disappeared into nothingness the day the machine crashed.
I will stay in touch and let you know what's happening. And then, of course I'll have to find a way to take my vehicles with me;)
