Hi guys.

A guy from work has a 1949 88in series 1 hardtop. He has owned it since before he got a licence and I'd put him at about 30 years old. It has been garaged for quite some time but he runs it around his property for fun occaisionally so it still drives ok.
He says it is totally original. Even has the crank handle and I think the jack.

The only thing he reckons is wrong with it is the seats rotted away so he tossed them. He sits on a pillow now.

I have never seen it so don't know any other details.

Any idea what these things are selling for. Just roughly as obviously it depends on the buyer.

Wont be an 88" if it's a 49 model. Should be 80" I think.

Headlights behind the grill?

Becoming quite hard to find now. If it's fair dinkum and not full of rust I would think it will still fetch 2 or 3 grand. Maybe.

If it's a '49, it will be an 80" rather than 88". As for its value, hard to say without pics or more details.

Like most things, its value depends on what the buyers are prepared to pay.

I haven't seen it but next time I see him I'll get him to take pictures. As for the 1948 88in thing that is just what he told me.
However even if I had seen it I wouldn't know a series 1 from a series 3 ;)

Got some more info on this car from the owner.

It has the parking lights on the firewall,
door handles on the inside (lift up flap of soft top),
flat sides,
two litre motor.

So this makes it pre 1950 according to Uncle Ho's PM I think.

A paddock basher unregistered in 'okay' conditon. About $2000.... They're yet to be a true collector so collect it and restore it - the ironic part of your story (and potential acquisition) is that they're not uncommon, like Fergie TEA 20 Tractors... Land Rovers just don't stop..... even after 50 or more years, there's still many in operation... (we have a 52 on the farm which works fine, basic and a bit grindy...)

He is thinking about it. He doesn't want to for sentimental reasons but he thinks he probably should as it is just taking up space in his shed.

It's a 49 model apparently in okay condition, therefore is a v....

If it drives and is drive to reg (club) - I'm going $2000 - but it's sight unseen.

in okay cond, the age of this LR makes it interesting...

Did you say it had a 2 litre engine? I didnt think they had them that big back then (not that I'm overly knowledgeable about the SI)

I thought the SI had a 1.4L or something like that, with an overhead inlet and side exhaust valve...

Yeah I think your on the right track there, although 1.6l comes to mind.

Anyone confirm this?

As for how much he doesn't know. This is probably the first he's looked into it.

Uncle Ho said the earlier S1 had a 1.6L and the later had a 2L. I don't know when the year change was for that though.
I'll get him to get numbers off it next time I see him.

I'm sure they had a 1.6 from one of the small rover sedans before they went to 2ltr.

If it is a 1949 AND has the original motor, it is 1595cc. (a few 1948 models had smaller engines) But these motors were interchangeable with the 2000cc motor fitted from 1951 (replaced by another 2000cc motor in 1953), and many would have been changed for the more powerful motor. All Series 1 motors except for the diesel were overhead inlet side exhaust engines.

It will be 80" wheelbase, and I don't think that Landrover made a hardtop for the 80", although there was a truck cab, but quite a few were made by other people, varying from way better than anything Landrover ever made to absolutely awful.

G'day Utemad :)

The info that you have so far, it has parkers on the fire wall, there is no outside door handles, would indeed make it a 49 or an early 50, it could have the 5in headlights behind the grille, or, have the 7in lights exposed with a "Ring" around them, the later vehicles had the inverted "T" grille, which cleared the lights, it should also have the "Pressed" Firewall, (rounded corners inside, not right angle folds)and the steering box is mounted to the firewall, It could have the 2litre motor as that was a common substitute for the 1.6 litre when it wore out, it as still a side/overhead motor, the parking lights did not go down to the front guards until Spring 1951. and yes, it would be an "80 inch"

cheers.:)
