Just heard on the news, Craig's hut has been lost to the victorian bushfires. :(
For the uninitiated, craig's hut was the "movie set" hut built on Mt. sterling especially for the movie "the man from snowy river". It was rebuilt in 1993 as more of tourist attraction.
Of course, no cattleman in their right mind would build a hut there, but it did have a magnificent view.

Ray, you little:eek: Attenborough, the hut was originally in the Sheepyard Flat area when filming then moved near Mt Stirling.

How ironic......It was maintained by the Mansfield C.F.A.

I agree, they are sure to rebuild it.... 1,000's of people every year visit it... and they have just rebuilt the car park;)

I hope not too many of the "real" huts go...

You can rebuild something like Craigs - cause it is really a fake. ( I nice fake.... but a fake just the same.)

Places like Wallaces hut (the oldest in Vic) are a little harder to replace...:(

In the 2003 fires dozens of huts went... it's sad to see real bush history disappear... even if it is inevitable.

Reminds me of something I learned when I visited Port Arthur - I wondered why the buildings had not been preserved better after the convict settlement ended. I found that they were, but with the lack of labour they got pretty overgrown and about twenty years later there was a bushfire.....

Yes, the ground around there is apparently "too fragile an ecosystem" for 4WDs to traverse, so they've excavated a massive car park and put in a gravel road - because earthworks don't affect tree roots!!!

This is the website of the Victorian High Country Huts Association. They were heavily involved in rebuilding huts after the 2003 fires. I am sure they will update their site with huts damaged from these fires when the surveys are done.

Yeah shame . Went there back in March. Really nice place and great fun getting there.
Must admit as a pom i did not know what it was before we went but my Aussie Misses is a Man from Snowy River fan.
Was well worth the trip to it, and i do hope they rebuild .

I thought the same thing. There were two bush fires sometime in the 1800's. I think within about 5 years of each other.

I've never had the chance to visit the huts. I love that sort of thing but I don't understand why you would want to visit a fake movie hut with all of the tourist stuff to go with it when you can visit the real things?

Ray Id like to know where you got your info, as I grew up in Merrijig, 4th generation local and went to school with some of the Lovick kids and I was an extra in Snowy 2 and I know for sure that Craigs hut was never in Sheepyard flat.

The hut your probably thinking of is Fry's hut on Fry's flat just around the corner from sheepyard and it is under threat at the moment, I also went to school with Fred Fry's (who built that hut) grandaughter.

Craigs hut was originaly built as just a set (with yellow box slabs off the walls of our 100 year old stables) and had no back but after filming was finished was rebuilt by 4wd clubs and the Cattlemans asscociation to similar conditon to what was there until yesterday.

The hut was then pulled down and a more permanent one built in the same design by the set builders for Snowy 2 and the maintained by 4wd clubs, Cattleman and the Mansfield council.

I heard Counciler Gaffeny (CEO Mansfield council) on ABC radio this morning say that it is on top of the list of things to be rebuilt so the intention is there.

The area where it is is called Clear hills and the veiw is so good that the original Dunny up there had only the bottom half of the door so you could admire the veiw while sitting on the loo.

:(:( I do hope it survives...Fry's might be one of the easiest huts to get to.... but I do like it.

It is in a clearing.... but if that big old redgum next to it goes... it stuffed.:(
