Hello.
Ive posted a couple of times and got some great help...so:
As the title says I have a '63 sIIa. and a spare sIII ex military '71 6 cyl...and I'm still new to this stuff..
The 2a is good engine wise - but there are the usual oil leaks, 2 really bother me:
A lot of oil throwing off my front hub (has the diffLock thing to turn..(sorry - I don't even know what it's called).
The transmition brake is getting contaminated with oil - so makes hill stops "interesting".
Are there common oil seals that go for this to happen - or is it potentially serious?
Also what use can I put to the s3 into the 2a? I was thinking gearboxs, tranfer, 2" risers etc.
I could REALLY do with finding someone who can just drive it and give me feedback on the state of the gears and the rest..cos I don't have a clue on how easy, hard, noisy etc it should be
Im in BrisVegas - i can drive out if someones game. - I really like this LandRover.
Thanks.
Will

G'day Will
Sounds like you have a couple of seal problems however they are easily fixed. The hub seal that is leaking at the wheel and throwing oil around is a dead easy job. While your at it you may as well put new wheel bearings in on both sides. I drove mine around with a leak for a while before I fixed it and thought of it like an anti wheel rust system. The 'diff locks' you refer to are free wheeling hubs designed to remove some of the strain from your front axle when 4wd is not needed. Make sure you turn them to lock occasionaly though to keep them lubricated. Make sure they are engaged before you select high or low range 4wd aswell or you'll get very stuck. With them unlocked the front axle gets saved a bit of wear and tear. The park brake oil seal leak is one I had fixed by Techno British at Moorooka. I cant remember how much it cost me but you will be up for the seal and a new set of brake shoes as the old ones will be full of oil.
Hunt around your local news agencies for the following magazines
Land Rover Owner International
Land Rover World
Land Rover Enthusiast
Land Rover Monthly
All of them have comprehensive technical articles on heaps of common repair jobs. Also worth buying yourself a repair manual. There is a shop at Fairfield called FWD that sells heaps of old landy parts. MR automotive at Redcliffe also seems to get a lot of positive feedback.
Might also be worth joing the Land Rover owners club of Brisbane. they meet at Salisbury from memory. One of the members here called Vlad Tepes is the club secretary.
Now I have sore fingers.
P.S. welcome to the obsession

BTW
Forgot to mention to pop into the REMLR section of this site to find out what you can about your ex military series three. If you have its ARN number you can find out heaps of info regarding your vehicle and its uses. Theres also a landy wrecking yard at Gympie and British Off Road at Forest Glenn for parts supplies.
Regarding your gearbox the most common complaints from series boxes are then jumping out of gear on overun or deceleration from worn detent springs or cones. The series two you have will also not have syncro mesh on the gears meaning you should be double de cluching your gear changes.
Other than that it would be worth dropping the oil from your gearbox, transfer case and diffs and refreshing with new oil as God only knows how long the old stuffs been in there.
cheers

Page 127 of the December 2000 issue of Landrover Owner International gives a step by step pictorial of changing the transfer case oil seal (leaking onto your handbrake). Job should take less than an hour and cost about $15 in parts. if you want i can get a photocopy of it and post it to you. If so send your address via PM.
cheers

Overpriced:eek:   ?????......I dunno about you but they're heaps better and better value than the Aussie 4X4 mags around I'm very sorry to say.......I only wish we could have at least one made in Oz 4X4 mag as good as LR Owner International Edition or LR Monthly or even LR World......Australian 4WD Monthly is probably the best of the locals - and they've started issuing a DVD every couple of issues now.....but even so ALL the Aussie ones are on about Japanese 4WD's or softroaders......I only get them if they do stuff about Trips, routes, areas etc.;)
As far as the Pommie mags, I reckon $12 -13 is bloody cheap for all the info [especially tech stuff!] you get out of them, especially if you've got more than one sort of LR product [hehehe;) ]...........I get both LROI and LR Monthly every issue;) ........even the ads let you know what is available inasmuch that you can do a google search and usually find a local Rep or Importer or Supplier.
