Hi All
I have an 81 RR I looked in the flame trap to clean it and it's empty.
I think there is supposed to be some sort of wire filter, (wirewool type stuff).
What can I use to fill the flame trap? Clean comments only please:)
I haven't asked if the Landy Stealers sell the filter but the housing & filter costs over $100 !!
So what can I use that's cheap?

I had mine out the other day & it was a type of woven wire mesh wool. *** Not steel wool.
I suspect a couple of those stainless steel scouring pads would do the same job.

I bought one from LRA in Thomastown a couple of years back and it was about $40 from memory New.

The mesh in some LR flametraps appears to be aluminium. I tried a technique I used on my old RR HiLine and the mesh dissolved in the County's flame traps.
The pics below shows how the Rangie's flame trap material looked before and after a soak in caustic soda (this stuff needs treating with care!) then a wash in water.

Real basic question: what does a flame trap do? Must be a petrol thing as I've never heard of one on my diesels.

It traps flames :D:D:D:D:D
It's got something to do with preventing the flames/explosion from a back fire getting places they shouldn't be.
Also something to do with allowing gasses to escape and not build up causing gasket failure. I think?
I know they are fitted to some diesels dunno about landy's though. Some one will tell you.

Just been there.....Hangover....
Read my recent post titled: "oil leak goes bad - uh oh."
Nice pix Ron.
When I eventually got the wire out, I washed in petrol and let it dry - good as new.

G'day Hangover:)
You could always go to a wrecker and get one from a wrecked RR or maybe an early Disco, if realy desperate you could buy a Series oil filler cap and open it to extract the wire wool, standard method of cleaning these things was to wash in petrol as specified in the Series w/shop manuals:)

I wish I could find a RR getting wrecked for all those little bits I could salvage. It has two disadvantages 1. Finding one getting wrecked 2. the price people ask for used stuff.
I don't mind paying a fair price for used stuff, around the half price, (maybe more) I think is reasonable but this depends on lots, such as availablity, age, condition, distance etc.
eg I wanted a rim for a spare wheel, wreckers yard (old rusty) $90
Brand new steelie from a shop, $110
I'm having a moan !
I called around I can get a new flametrap for $60 still it's a lot considering all I need is a bit of wire mesh, apparently they only sell the whole unit.

Mine was so gunked up, petrol wouldn't clean it.
A soak in caustic soda did. I also used the same technique on my Hillman Hunter flame traps.

I unroll mine.
Give it a shake and a tap.
Quick rinse in kero.
Roll up and install.
5 mins max.

it will provide excess back pressure and lower your performance.

G'day HangOver :)
In that case you can use the innards out of the breather, either rocker cover or oil filler of a 4 cylinder Series motor ;)
there should be a wrecker in perth with one or somebody one this site might have one that you can strip:)

Hi All
All sorted with the flametrap another Landy parts specialist, SOR near the Tonkin, (you know the one) gets a stock of them in about a week , $20 each :D:D
I never get sick or saying " It pays to shop around" I just saved about $80+ with three phone calls.
