anyone know how hard it would be to put an auto out of a 95 300tdi disco into a 95 300tdi fender?

anything nasty to be on the lookout for?

just mulling possibilites :P

The only one I have ever seen was George 130, it looks very impressive, very expensive and an absolute pr1ck of a job to do. I personally think a clutchless manual gearbox modification would be an easier option.

His is a Td5 though. I would have thought swapping the box on a Tdi would be a piece of cake given that it is all mechanical changes.

Dave,

Easy but time consuming, I've done them, give me a call and I'll run you through it. It is really easy if you have a donor vehicle. BTW, it makes the defender a total pleasure to drive.
This should have been done by landrover from the factory, it is an excellent idea.
I guess i could do another one while I'm on holidays next year up your way....

I does make them very easy to drive. I would have thought that a TDI was easier than the TD5. No computers to deal with. Mine almost looks factory.

Bloke who used to own the LR specialist down at slacks creek , converted his years ago...300tdi fender d-cab. Was a nice looking vehicle, and he and his wife commented on how much better it was. He eventually sold it on and bought a D2 Td5.

As stated above though, makes it easy to do if you have a donor vehicle.

Cheers,

Pug

Is this business still there? Didn't know there was a Landy specialist down that way.

Getting the finish on the floor is probably one of the hardest bits... Until the 50th edition came along, there wasn't an auto option in the Defender so making the finish look pretty used to be the ball ache.

If you can get hold of the 50th anniversary interior parts, I'd look at working back from there...

I was watching a doco on monster trucks the other night. One of the modifications they make is a cluthless function in a manual gearbox, as for the legality of this modification in Aus or getting someone over here to do it, dunno. Most new cars have the option though so it may be possible.

Clutchless manual gearboxes have beenaround from the 1920s at least - rarely very widely used, and lost popularity with the development of automatics in the fifties and sixties. A good example is the standard gearbox on Citroen DS from 1955 - 1975. Conventional manual gearbox and clutch with both operated hydraulically. Clutch was disengaged when in gear and engine speed dropped to idling, using a centrifugal control valve. Changing gears disengaged the clutch, closed the throttle changed gears, re-engaged clutch and returned throttle to the driver, all done by hydraulics and taking a fraction of a second. Other cars used an electric clutch with a switch that disengaged the clutch with the weight of the hand on the gearbox, and again, a centrifugal setup that disengaged the clutch at low engine speeds. They lost popularity as automatics became available with four or more gears that could be controlled by the driver.

G'day Folks :)

They were marketed by BMC in the 50's in Austins, known as Man-U-Matic's ;) driver changed gears manually using column change lever, clutch was Hydrostatic or Vacuum, I think.
