G'day All

Question for the 300TDi owners. What is your engine oil consumption like?

Is it nothing between changes (assuming that changes are at 5000 k intervals)

Half a litre, :( per 5000 k, A litre per 5000 k:o or more?????

Mine has 41,000 K on the clock (allegedly) and I did an oil change @ 40,000. Its now done 41,800 and I've just added half a litre. I'm dead sure it was spot on when I refilled it and the only leak I know of is the cooling hoses are weeping slightly at the oil pump. I'm a bit sus of the Turbo bearings recently as its started to make an unusual sound which is like a secondary turbo sound. Lower in frequency but runs up at about the same time that the boost comes on.

Your thoughts please.

Cheers,

Hi Stevo,

.........using 5K changes as a bench-mark, these are my own observations, covering ALL types of driving.

Mineral, or semi-synthetic oils,:

usually needed around 3-500mls top up anywhere approaching the 3-4000k mark.....so fairly normal.

FULL-Synthetic oils :

( have tried various in a few vehicles) ...Father currently using mobil 1 ( diesel ) 10-40 i think....zero oil usage.

Engine approaching 128k...or there abouts.

Hope this helps,

Pug

I got my Defender back in Oct 06. Had 79,000 on the clock and now has nearly 83,000. In that time I have had to put about 2L of oil in it as it blew the seal on the oil filter (previous owner had OVER tightened filter) and also the oil pressure switch started to leak and was replaced. Since I've fixed those (about 2,000km ago) it hasn't used any oil.

I'm going to do an oil change in the next month. Oil that is in it is HPR Penrite.

300,000 km, 10,000 km/6 months change intervals only ever used Castrol GTD/GTX diesel 15w40, check oils at least once a week. 800 ml - 1 ltr between changes

Mine's done 300000km now, and it uses so little oil between services (every 10000km) that I don't bother to check. On a recent trip up north (13000km) it didn't use a drop even though it was over 40 degrees in the shade every day and it worked bloody hard (fully loaded, low range territory, deep mud for long periods, etc).

I've owned 1998 300tdi since 55,000kms (now has 127,000kms) and I change oil every 5,000kms. I add about 500mls in that 5000km interval. Not sure exactly how much I add, but I always have to add a little bit in 5,000kms.

Has been like this since I've owned it so I assume it's normal.

my 95 disco tdi uses about 200-300ml per 5000k at 230,000 klms on caltex delo 400.

if your diesel engine isnt using oil then it is making it, and you need to get an oil test done to see just how much the diesel is affecting your oil.

I concur with the others . a few hundred ml between changes. I probably lose half of that through my leaking rear main oil seal.

Check that the wading plugs are removed from the bell housing ( if a manual ) and the timing belt cover. If not, and you do have a leaky seal ,oil could be building up inside there.

Isuzu 4BD1, 422000 k's, oil use between 5000 k. changes negligible.

same here very small amount of oil used. oil changed every 5K.

Plus, now no coolant usage - i found the small leak after 6 months:) :)

99 300tdi disco auto, 172K on the clock and it averages 300-500ml every 5K and seems to need a top up around the 3500-4000 mark.

So it seems its one of the average ones, although towing the trailer last year on our outback trip made no difference to the usage:cool:

94 300tdi, 270K on clock, owned for twelve months, i have done 25K, 5 oil changes with negligable oil consumption but just replaced clutch and gearbox, bugger.

mine is next to none over 5k, its normally spot on the line after a change (after i put the oil in i run the engine for 5 min or so than top up again), i don't check during the 5k, worst case i'm missing the top quarter between the max-min lines

Q - how much oil is required to bring the level up from the bottom line to the top line.

in all my cars i have only every added if the oil got near the bottom line

opps - 95 defender, 220K on the clock

Same here.... 96 Defender with 245k on the clock and it just doesn't use oil between changes no matter what the conditions.

G'day Kelvin

Conventional wisdom predicts that MOST dipsticks these days there is a litre between FULL n ADD.

Don't worry, See there is nothing to worry about. I have a Disco ATM that was re ringed on used bores (!) and is using about 250 ml per 600km!!!
Needless to say the repairer who did the job will probably have to eventually re bore and replace pistons to halt the oil consumption and smoking.....

Your axles are here.

Sorry Adrian, I meant DRIVE flanges for the front. The discs are also here, I haven't had the phone on to the new workshop till tomorrow , so haven't been contacting people much for a few days.

Give me a call and we'll sort out a time.

G'day All

I just wanted to thank you for your input re the Oil Consumption. I'm still unsure as to weather it was human error (didn't completely refill the sump dikhead) or weather I have a problem. If it doesn't leak, valve guide seals & turbo seals are still ok then it can't be anything except glazed bore or rooted oil control rings.

Towing the Trek camper to townsville will certainly give it a bit of hard work to chew on so if the bore is glazed it should help break it down.

We will see what happens after that but unfortunately I won't have JC (Southern Australia's formost Landrover Expert) to assist me. :(

Oh well I'll just have to convince him to move to Townsville and hire me as his apprentice. :p
