I am looking at an engine on fleabay its a 2.25 purely as a total strip down and rebuild exercise. Only problem is getting it from sellers house to my shed. Is there a simple way to lift and transport an engine around the place ???? Once ive got it sorted an engine stand would have to be purchased etc. Any thoughts?
cheers

Hi Mick
Small block and tackle to lift it up back your trailer under it lower into trailer.
Get a stuffed tyre to sit the motor in,31x10.5x15 or similar work good.It will hold the engine upright enough without damaging the sump.

Thanks Andy, only problem is no block and tackle mounting points (roof wise) Good tip on the tyre though.

You could hire one of these:

Kennards (http://www.kennards.com.au/) have them.

Three lengths of 2" scaffolding pipe, drill a 16mm hole two inches from the end of each, and join them with a 1/2" bolt - the oversize holes will allow you to spread the legs sufficiently to get a box trailer under it. Length of pipe depends on how much overhead you have - I used to use 10ft. Now use a ute crane mounted on my tandem trailer.
Alternative - six feet of same pipe, plus four blokes, two on each end.

any mates have a little crane like a Hiab or palfinger, even tailgate loader....that's the easy option...straight on the back.

I have used John's method and it works well. I have also used the stupid adrenaline method with a friend where you both lift to the point of no return and rely on the pain and adrenaline to finish before you injure yourself.

I have a floor crane you could borrow, but Uncle Ho is probably closer. (Mine is at Ipswich)

i have a full set of lifting gear, an aframe over head beam setup but usually I lift motors into trailers by laying them on a movers trolly (get one from supercheap for <$30 tying them on then (with a helper) tipping the trailer up after un hitching it, laying the trolly onto the bed, leveling the trailer and then just pulling the engine upright, secure the trolly once vertical...
Of course IF i have the aframes up from lifitng the engine out i just use the block and tackle or the chain block after reversing the trailer under.
If its in the local area and can wait till my trailers empty (after sunday) Im happy to help out where I can.

May be a bit late posting this.
Make up a set of sheer legs. That is, 2 equal lengths of sturdy galv pipe, with a hole bored through one end each to take a big shackle. Attach 2 rope work block and tackle sets to this end. In effect you make an A frame. The whole set is easily transportable, the bottoms of the legs, are set in the front corners of a trailer, one block and tackle is fixed to the trailer draw bar, and raises and lowers the sheer leg. The other block and tackle is the lifting set. This will also work for the back of a ute or tray topper. Can be used in a shed, can be used under a tree, can be used anywhere the sheer legs can be secured, and the sheer head tackle can be fixed. If you need to traverse or swing, just use one leg, as an old fashioned cargo ship derrick. The head tackle just has to be fixed higher up to help control the swing of the derrick boom, as this is what the single leg becomes.
Good old fashioned Admiralty Pattern Seamanship. A stick or two, and a piece of string or two. A squad of sailors under a well trained officer, can shift the moon.
Damn.:(
I've just gone and given myself a new project for my nice big shed.:D
Shorty.
