What bulbs types do I need for the dash instruments (Speedo, etc.) and the cig lighter? Don't want to pull the dash out to get the type before buying new ones, that's all...

I'd hazard a guess and say "light bulbs"

We've been looking for a cigarette lighter replacement globe and the ususal places can't help us. It looks as though we will have to go to a dealer to get a replacement ;)

If the cigarette light bulb is the same as the P38A - they are standard 1.2 watt 12v wedge base globes.

Does it look like this (mine):

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/03/1011.jpg

From my parts lists, the instruments globes in the Defender are all wedgebase. They are a bog standard item available from any auto store and even my local Woolies servo.

The speedo lighting bulb is probably 3w (don't use 5w which are for tail lights, etc.) and, the smaller instruments use 2w, the small globes in the warning lamps 1.2w

See here:

http://www.narva.com.au/Globes_4.html

As an aside, if you have an automatic Disco, there are two 3 watt globes illuminating the gear selector. Remove and replace them with 2 watt globes. If you don't the 3 watt globes will melt the plastic and you'll have to buy a new assembly. (Hmm or were they 5 watt and I replaced them with 3 watt?)

When I was changing the bulbs in my gear selector you recommended using 3w not 5w. I went for the 3w and they work fine.

Actually, that does look quite good! Is that your clock or tacho on the far right that doesn't look to have been "blinged up" in the same way though? The "problem" I'm actually trying to fix is getting my VDO tacho to light the same was as the OEM instruments, so replacing the whole lot may be the easiest way to go. Oh, plus my cig lighter socket doesn't light at all, so that needs a new lamp for sure.

Does anybody know if someone makes red LED dash-lights? I thought red was always the best colour for dash lighting as it prevents night-blindness.

No need to eBay it, Autobarn has blue LED's that suit ,"T5" is the size code, and from memory $14.00/set, did mine, VERY BRIGHT, looks sweet....;)

The only one I could not change was the clock, I literally took it to pieces, and still could not get at the globe 'cause it was within the clock mechanism.....other than that, all went to Blue, heater control lights cig lighter and the clocks.......I'll get a pic up on the weekend.....lol......

Give them a call, worth a shot, my local Autobarn has them hanging behind the cash registers, so they appear to fly iin and out, as opposed to the back of the store where they have the traditional light globes, .....or as mentioned above check out the Narva website.......;)

As in, there don't appear to be any Autobarn stores in WA according to their web site! Unless it's wrong and some of the locals here know where there is one...

So are these common across all Landy products,ie Classic Rangie(86) and Disco2???
Is it T10 or T5??? as both sizes have been posted.
Are the headlight sidelights in the D2 also these wedge globes????

I'd say they are common. They were used in some locations in the classic if I remember correctly.

The P38A uses wedge base lamps in all instruments (as I show here: http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/lcdlights.html and here: http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/binnacle.html ), front parking lights, side repeaters, high level stop, map lights, and number plate lights.

I reckon the D2 would use them in the parkers.

Hang on, I'll check the parts lists....... yes, used in front parkers on the D2 by the look of it - and the side repeaters.

Also used on the Freelander.

Oh, and sude repeaters on the Defender.

They are as common as muck.

i have changed most of my bulbs to blue led's

all my dash lights except things like indicators etc are blue led

my backlight for the air conditioning nobs has a blue led

and the bulbs that light up the gear selector has blue led's in it < has made the gear selector a dam sight cooler thats for sure....

the only thing left is the clock as the rest of my interior lights are white led's

the boot being changed to two 21 led flexable strip lights as the sub boxes cover the old boot interior light hell it was crap and yellow anyway;)

so you are looking at miss led here:D:D only changed all my'n
one because its a nicer light to they dont get as hot (funny car doesn't start real well now:angel:)

and two they are a lot longer lasting

stop lights are next........(that wont be blue though may comfuse a few people).....go on go on tell me "i dont think thats legal....that might effect your insurance" :D:D:D:D

led is the way

I put a VDO Tacho in my fender and was blinded by the bright white light. Narva make these little silicone rubber covers for T5, T10, T15 in 4 colours and you just slip them over the bulb. It took 2 of the green ones to match the colour and brightness perfectly!

Ah, that's another way to solve my problem...not as "blingy" but just as good! :)

Hmmm. No doubt "Autobahn" in WA would not let anyone call themselves "Autobarn" here without lawyers at 20 paces.
