problems with my 1991 disco heater

I have a 1991 Disco with a heater problem.

The temp control has simply stopped working ?

I've only had the car for 6 months, the car is stock. Since I've had it i've replaced the water pump and the radiator. I followed the advice from my local landrover specialist when putting in the radiator as he replaced the water pump at an earlier time.

It had an after market stereo which I removed then taped up the wires untill i recently found a suitable replacement.

The temp control unit appeared to stop working shortly after I removed the stereo.

A co-worker who wheels on the east coast (i'm on the west coast) said the disco's heater unit is electrical and some times stops working ?

Any help with the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Just check that you havnt ripped any wires of that go down into the heater controls ( I will be corrected Im shure) that may be vacuum operated and you can easilly crack a vac line when doing stereo work so you may need to replace a line or a section.

I havnt had one apart, I have do the stezza change but mine still works so Im not really 100% on how they work.

Mine's a later model but the temp controls are all mechanical linkages to the heater flaps. The recirculate flap is electrical (servo) but not the temp. The outer casing of the temp 'cable' (it's more of a stiff wire) is retained by a spring steel clip. If the outer slips in the clip, the flap won't move. This may be the problem with yours; assuming of course that it is a similar system.

Ok, will go check... I'll have to pull the center console back out which is not a problem, from what I've experienced so far when changing the stereo if done carefully it can be removed as one then leaving the heater section to remove ?

Found the problem, awabbit is correct... the mechanical cable (steel wire) has broken at the lever !!!!!!!

Now to try fix it without buying a new cable...

Out of curiosity, why were you looking for a suitable stereo ? any single din one will fit easily ?

I was looking for a blue tooth & ipod ready stereo to come on sale due to the end of year stock take sale :D

End'd up fitting a nice 2007 model kenwood which had everything I was looking for :cool:

To finish off my adventures with the heater, it's all fixed, everything is back to gether and all is ok.

Now for the LPG conversion...

Which will prob lead into suspension upgrade to carry the extra weight as was the case in my old Jeep Cherokee when you added 100kg to boot...
