Advice needed.

My wifes '99 2lt diesel freelander will not go into gear. I sent it in for repairs to a recomended Land Rover dealer in NSW two weeks ago. They seem to be lost to what the problem might be. The transfer case was replaced two years ago.

Have they checked for little rocks in the gear linkage/selector somewhere?

Possibly the clutch hydraulics. Not sure about the diesels, but the 1.8 petrols have a sealed hydraulic system. To replace, it comes complete filled with fluid.

a quick test for the clutch is to start the car........press the clutch.......
wait a couple of seconds.......then slowly select reverse........

if you feel or hear it crunching instead of going into gear smoothly.......then the clutch is not disengaging properly.......


do this test then get back to us........we will go from there.......

Diesels are the same. Could be the hydraulics if nothing obvious with the linkages.

If it is crunching when trying to go into gear it could be a binding spigot bush. On real hot days mine binds making it almost impossible to engage 1st or reverse. I haven't fixed it as it only happens in summer and the clutch will need replacing soon. On this car it could be binding all the time.

An obvious test that you have probably already done ... Will it go into gear without the engine running? This will eliminate or confirm the clutch as the problem.
