thought I'd give this another go,,
two XP SP2 PCs
one, extra clean,(GREENY) nothing but XP.

the other (BLUEY, we are not big on numbers here,,,)has a, er few extra things on it,,

greeny has an ASUS A7V333 so no lan chip,, but has a NEW network card installed and after running the wizard tells me there is no incoming connection, also no connection icon in tray.(box is ticked)

bluey has a gigabyte 7vm400am-rz
basicaly, its all "on-board"-- LAN is handled by a "VIA vt6103" chip.

NEW (this morning) network crossover cable.

during the network (BLUEY) wizard it tells me a cable is unplugged(which tells me I've just wasted my money on a new cable:( as this is the same message I got last time).

yes I DO have another network card,, two infact,
one is identical and the other is an old D-link.
swapping hasnt helped.

switching firewalls off makes no difference, [it is interesting that windows now acknowledges other
firewalls and virus software:eek:]

I'm getting faster at hitting this particular brick wall:D

any ideas?

Pedro_The_Swift

hmm,,
could it be??

one end ethernet,,
the other not?

When you plug the cable in you should see lights flashing on the card. If not, you have a problem with the cable or the cards.

If you do have flashing lights then it's a software issue.

First thing is look for the lights!

I assume you are setting up a peer-to-peer connection.

Does your card support automatic sensing so you don't need a cross-over cable?

yep two green lights,,
now.

but!

I put the second lan card into bluey,,
disabled the on-board lan,

now I get a second network symbol, but it has "limited connectivity"
when I ask it to repair itself
it tells me it cant renew its IP address,,

Did you allocate an IP Address on each? Use something like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 and see how they go. You also need to have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft networks. Make sure the network card speeds and duplex settings match.
Cheers,
Russ

Pedro_The_Swift

yup I had to add it in, in device drivers,
I thought XP auto allocated IP address?

and then tried a "repair" on the connection,,

still needs an ip address:mad:

I'm not used to doing Perr-to-peer in fancy operating systems. The sure-fire way (but fiddly) is to get into the settings and manually set the addresses to something like the above, and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

What is probably happening is that the subnet masks on the two computers are not in agreement. E.g. one is defaulting to an address of say 10.0.0.1 and the other to 192.168.1.1 but their masks (which will probably be 255.255.0.0) don't allow them to speak to each other. If you manually set the addresses and the subnet mask yo shold get communication.

That could be the problem - they are BOTH allocating the addresses. But more likely the subnet masks and addresses are not in agreement.

hmm ok,, and where do I find subnetmasks?

hmm ok,, and where do I find subnetmasks?
Goto control panel\network connections, select your connection, right click and select properties. On the General tab select "Internet Protocol (tcp/ip)" and press the properties button. Your should now see the subnet mask under the static IP address. Set the Subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

More info.
Setting Static IP Address on both computers.
On each computer go to control panel\network connections, select your connection, right click and select properties. On the General tab select "Internet Protocol (tcp/ip)" and press the properties button.
Select "Use the following IP address"
Computer GREEN, set the IP address to 192.168.0.1
Computer BLUE, set the IP address to 192.168.0.2
If you just press OK now the subnet mask will be auto completed

Microsoft is really crappy at networking, especially XP Home edition. The computers argue about who will be Boss, unless you run a SERVER. If you want to fix it buy a Router and let it run the network and do the DHCP.

incisor
17th July 2007, 04:01 PM
why dont you just run the network wizard and let it do all the walking, just answer the questions and it works in xp... way better and more secure than doing it manually...

OK!!
have two PCs with small LAN icons happening,,

can get as far as the similar named work group,,
have suitable drives shared on each,,

still dont think they are talking--

Pedro_The_Swift
17th July 2007, 04:33 PM
after disabling a 1339 something with a jumper in greeny, we now have packets floating back and forth,,, :D

but no access.

there is only one logon for each pc ,,,

is it something to do with guests???

incisor
17th July 2007, 05:42 PM
workgroup name needs to be the EXACTLY the same

machine names need to be DIFFERENT

have a username on each machine and you access the other machine using that name

eg if greeny login is mum then you use mum's username and password to map a drive or feature on that machine, and vice versa

in xp there is a section to manage network passwords..

Don't you have a router? Or a switch? How do you connect to the internet?

Sorry, but i haven't seen any this crossover cable stuff in year and the rule then was, never trust a crossover peer to peer connection.

Remember to allow sharing on the volumes on which you want to exchange data. My Computer - drive/folder/volume - right click - sharing and security. Or just dump the data to transfer in shared documents folder.

And if you're allowing shares on your primary drive you probably want a router to hide behind if you're running an always on connection.

Cheers
Simon.

Have you SHARED a drive on each computer? I think you're there, Pedro, you just don't know it yet :)

To share, right click the drive in Explorer, and click "share", fill in the form and you're done.

Pedro_The_Swift
18th July 2007, 09:34 AM

its permissions.

have you run the wizard?

Pedro_The_Swift
18th July 2007, 10:09 AM
the wizard keeps coming up with an unspecifed error,,,,

oh, and would it make a difference if one PC (greeny) was a HOME edition?? one of the SP's changes the login screen to the PRO version,
keep forgetting:whistling:

incisor
18th July 2007, 11:32 AM
what security software.. ?

if the wizard wont run then you have software issues that wont be resolved until you get the wizard working.

do a repair install using the 3rd repair option off the boot disk, get your base software sorted and the wizard should then run.

kept my agp card but lost those files, again
added them from second pc

the "microsoft system management bios driver" needs one

a proceedure point could not be located
getbestinterfaceEx.???

but the main problem is bluey will not recognise the usb modem cable when plugged in

whats a fixcc exe?
this goes ballistic everytime I run SP2
need an enhanced usb driver,,,
SP2 will not load(which has that driver)

do i need to run SP1(please say no) first

screw windows.

keeps finding a new usb controller,,
(the one that will let the modem talk to the pc,, obviously)

but where are the drivers?

theres already 4 "Via" usb controllers there,
4 usb root hubs
a mass storage hub,
a composite hub,
a generic usb hub

its nearly beer oclock--- :(

And I sort of remember that you had a problem that was solved by turning plug and play autodetect, or something like that, back on after it was switched off.

Maybe you should switch it off again.

Ha!

Was that permission to access other computer or permission to establish network?

Did you set up the new user to get into the other computer after you reinstalled?

Captain_Rightfoot

OK, dare i say it at this point if you know someone with a small network it might be worth taking them for a day trip and trying to put each computer on a known working network and get them working individually. Problem is now, a minor fault on either and both of them don't work.

Windows networking is very fiddly as you know and the smallest thing will sink you. If you were in Bris you'd be welcome to pop around. (I'm not saying I'm a expert but I have a working network here (PC and Mac) so that's a start)
