Can anyone suggest where I might be able to get High Tensile nuts and bolts from?
I still don't know Sydney too well and my searches on the net only come up with fastener wholesale and manufactures.
Bunnings only appear to sell mild steel bolts. Where else is there to try?

I think it's Tower that I usually go to. There's another place over in Alexandria, too. Could be these guys.

Hmmm all the bunnings here sell them, the black one's? I am assuming they are HT as they were sold me as HT nuts n bolts?
Are the bunnings ones no good?

Lee Bros next to the jail at Parramatta are excellent. They sell any nut and bolt that you could possibly think of - actually thats mainly what they sell. I'm pretty sure they used to be called the nut house. :lol2:

HT bolts/screws have a code stamping on the head.
I can't recall what it is now but it identifies HT.
eg. Grade 8.8 . May also have the Spec #, eg. A.S.1110
There are also Black Hex. Head in Black Steel. Commercial Grade.
*** Don't use these where HT is recommended.

Fred Tapping at Ingleburn would be my choice.

It would help if we knew where in Sydney you live, Sam. Put it in your profile.

I know our mitre 10 stocks them. They are a rural hardware store though so are used to the farmers coming in wanting bit's and pieces. I normally take a sample with me and tell them what I want it for. They happily go through the range to find the right one.

I went to Lee Bros on Friday last week and was a little dissapointed with the lack of range and advice! have been going there for years and have been excellent in the past.:(
Tower in Marrickville are good as are Coventry fasteners who have several places and agents.
HT is not as simple as High tensile please. Also tensile is not the same as shear strength.
Several systems and grades and markings. Some times a grade 5 is better than 8 or 12 as the "stronger" ones get extremely brittle.
Also Hex head bolts are not as strong as Socket head cap screws. and as said above the shank is much stronger than the threaded bit. Then you get coatings. Zinc can make the bolts even more brittle! Some times painting the black ones is the best.
And often the shop will impart knowledge and specifications but you need an engineer to tell you which one is best!

One of the good guys who used to work there is in the LROC (Sydney). It's a shame he retired.
There have a couple of new staff members but the older ones are usually very helpfull.
