View Full Version : Vehicle hoist? What capacity do i need?

Guys,
I'm looking at getting a hoist (2 post)for all those hard to do jobs, like pulling gearbox's, dropping axle assemblies etc.
My question to you all is....what capacity hoist would I require to lift a 110 or even a 130 for that matter? Now I know it's usually around the 2400kg mark (I think) but I'm wondering if a 2.5tonne hoist will be sufficient and safe. Should I go for a 3 tonne or even a 3.5 tonne?
Any recomendations regarding brand of hoist etc would be appreciated too.:)
And before anyone asks........yes it will be available for hire (cheap) on weekends etc when I am not using it. BYO tools and beer though.:D

Get the biggest capacity one you can afford. If you have resale value in mind, get a 240 volt one. Three phase hoists are commonly available second-hand or at auction, but having a 240v. one expands your possible buyer base exponentially. When you install it, leave at least 2 metres all around. You will find out why if you don't.

The 110's (4 door wagon) kerb weight isn't that much I 'believe'... out of the factory they weighed in at just 2 ton - if you have extra fuel tanks and stuff it wont take long to exceed 2.5 ton so I'd go a 3 ton hoist, especially if you wanna feel comfy with other people using it on weekends.

I agree 100%. Biggest safety margin.
We only use our 4 post hoist for Defenders, Rangies, Discoverys, etc.
Subarus and Freelanders go on the 2 post.

In consideration of the fact the hoist would have a FOS (Factor of Satety) probably in the order of 4, I would expect a 2.5T would be adequate.

Expecting something to be adequate is little compensation when 3 tonnes of Defender is resting on your head...

I've got a 2 mast 9000 Lb (pound?) hoist in the shed - single phase motor. Got it from TuffLift, which is American, and it was around $3K.
I've had fully loaded expedition Land Rover Defenders on it no problems. One was about 3000Kg and it was a bit slower to lift it, but no problems once up there.
The 2 leg ones flex a bit (2 or 3 inches wobble if you rock the car when it's up there), so I guess a 4 leg would be more stable.
I can give you the contact details of the guy to talk to if you like. He was excellent. It takes a couple of guys to install it though - not a job to do on your own, and you need a 15A power socket too.

Here is the link to their basic model:
http://www.tufflift.com/page7.htm
8000 pounds is 3.6 tonnes, so mine must be a 4.0 tonne lift.

I know it's an extravagance, but the older I get the less I like lying on my back under a tractor or Landie.
Once you've had one you wonder how you got by without it.

True .... but if it complies with the relevant SAA Standard and is correctly installed that scenario WILL not occur. Even if it's overload it should in the parlance of Messrs R&R .... fail to proceed.

Totally agree, as for the wobbles surely a diagonal cross beam anchored to the ground would stop this problem.

True, but if you could trust them that much they wouldn't come fitted with safety catches and strongly worded instructions to always use them :o.

It's not the 2 beams that wobble, they are well anchored and will not budge a mm, and they are linked across the top too (so there are no bars underneath - makes it easy to move around underneath the vehicle without tripping over anything).
It is the arms between the 2 posts and the vehicle. They have a degree of flex in them. I don't think it's anything to worry about. I was just pointing it out that it's not as solid as a 4 poster.

Yep .... but then again that's all to do with SAA compliance.

we have 2 types at work 3 +4 tons
the 3 tons struggle but manage and wobble like mad when lifting a GS let alone an LRPV
The 4 ton ones have double telescoping arms and are much more stable with much better guide plates for the lifting arms up the guide posts that do the lifting.

The safety factor is there for a very good reason, when a hoist is new and shiny you will get away with working at the rated Safe Working Load (SWL) or Working Load Limit (WLL) or even above it, but as the hoist gets older if you continue to exceed the SWL or WLL you are courting danger of collapse, esp if you buy a second hand one, stay within its working range and be safe, Regards Frank.

My mate Howie, has a 3 ton two post Molnar. It struggles the last foot or so with the County-Isuzu, so perhaps a 4ton would be the go. Also, I am 6'1" an am slightly stooped over under this hoist, so height at maximum lift would need to be checked.

Hey Mate
I have a 2 post 3T Italian clear floor hoist. Basically each post has a 3ph motor
which are linked with a leveling cable. all services are overhead. It lifts my Isuzu rangie no problems as long as the screws and slides are properly lubed. Just be aware you may need to chain your diffs to the chassis before lifting if you have a lot of articulation. The trailing arm bushes dont like being twisted that much. Good access is a bonus, as long as you have the room. I would have gone for a 4 post, but at auctions you dont always get what you want hey.;)
Justin
ps whatever you get make sure it gets serviced along with the car.

Mick wont have that problem lol.
I have a Molnar 4 post I cant think of what KG it is, I will have a look tomorrow and add it.
It is great and lifts everything, it has a single phase motor wired to the 3 phase plug (I dont know how that works) and lifts the Disco like it wasnt even there.
With 4 tonne of tractor/Loader/500kg counter weight it struggles a bit but once up and locked in I feel comfortable.
I have the sliding Jack that can lift 1 end or the other and another sliding plate that I can mount stands on if I want all 4 up in the air.
Once youve got one you cant go back.

I just said you werent 6'1 tall, if you have a problem with your hight then I wasnt to know.
Saying someone is as wide as they are tall is just bloody rude and insulting, saying that you wont have the problem of haveing to stoop is just humor.
You do have a problem Mick and Im not it, work it out and then I will give you a break.

They come from the All Blek Islets, sometimes called East Tasmania. Their football team won the Ra Ra World Cup twenty years ago but never since, but they still think they are the World Champions. Must be the weather.
