I've had a search through this forum and can't seem to find the answer to my question. Are the swivel hubs filled with oil or grease? My RAVE cd tells me its a Texaco EP00 on the castrol Austraila site it recommends their CASTROL EPX 80W/90. Threads here talk about grease or some kind of mixture???

Now I own a 12/2003 Defender 110 and am just wondering what I should use. I have read somewhere here about oil conversions for the hubs so this has got me totally confused.

Cheers Rob.

i have one of each....an each way bet

oil - passenger side
grease - drivers side

a broke a driver side cv so i converted to one shot grease, i'm pretty sure if landrover service your car they would change from oil to grease...i reckon the latest models would be grease filled

don't ask me whick is best

If your swivel ball is grey teflon coated it will be grease filled. Chrome = oil filled. Unless someone has already changed it...

I know mine are dark in colour and looked through the service history and it hasn't been changed so I would assume it would be grease. Is there a Australian marked equiv grease for this job?

I just overhauled my front end and grease came out so one-shot grease went in.The next weekend I replaced the front diff oil and it was full of one-shot grease so the inner seal was-is leaking so I don't thing it really matters. Pat

and which colour does the wife prefer and was the colour change painful ? :p

the easy way to tell if they came from the factory with 'Oneshot' grease (Texaco Molytex EP 00 ) is if your swivels don't have a level and drain plug. I think these were deleted around '97 or so with the introduction of the grease.
An NLGI 00 grease is very light and runny, almost like a very viscous oil. Looking at the specs of the Molytex EP00 it is a very average grease with 3% moly.

Penrite 00 Semi - fluid Grease.

Google for the Pdfhttp://www.penrite.com.au/files/2ZIIFZOTFD/SEMI-PIS.pdf

Penrite used to specify Semi-fluid Grease for the swivels on their US Site however it no longer seems to be mentioned in the vehicle spec sheets.

Semi fluid grease is also ideal for leaky steering boxes on series vehicles (non-power steering)

Haven;t bought any, but
can;t remember who put it up, might have been black dave (blkknight) gave a recipe for making your own, using the moly grease and the ep oil.
I tried it, mixed it in a jar put the lid on in, and thats as far as I got, never got around to trying it in the hubs.

so you could try a search and make some,

I've done that, used some 80w-140 gear oil i had (SAF-XA) and some NLGI #2 lithium complex moly grease (Castrol LMM) about 50/50. If you want to make it better, add some Molybond concentrate to up the MoS2 to a more effective level (3%/volume or better is ideal)
