View Full Version : 1985 County "Upgrade"
DeeJay
4th November 2007, 10:33 PM
I purchased a rolled over 1985 County that had the works including a 350 chev fully engineered and wanted to swap the good bits from my County over to this one.
The firewall has what I describe as minor damage so it will remain.
I intend to do this over a fairly long period, so I will only update this when significant work is achieved.
The rolled County was stripped out of fuel tanks, seats, wheel carrier, bullbar etc but the workmanship is aircraft standard, so I have diverted from wanting to put the engine from the rolled one into mine to putting the windscreen, body etc over to the new purchase. For ease of identity I think I'll call them red and white.

Having a few probs uploading, still can't get it right.
This is after week 1
Doors, roof, floorboards, rear of gearbox & front hub removed. pic of rear output shaft that caused the rollover, it is a 5.7 litre donk after all.;)

Well, I got sidetracked- again. I got cold feet when it came to pulling my County apart, so for $350, I bought a series 3 off a wrecker. That way I can put the cab & tray on the project County, take her for a spin or two, and if I'm happy, then probably get stuck into the county body and put it over. Decisions, decisions..

Cabin fits the existing brackets ok, i just needed to reverse the brackets that normally hold the back of the floor.
See arrows
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/12/220.jpg
This gives an extra 150mm of cabin space, however I need to extend the cabin, canopy & roof.
Marking out the side panel, I will use a rear panel as infill.

OK, I think I've got this picture stuff down pat.
I grafted the cabin over by reversing some brackets. This gives an extra 150mm cabin space, but now I have to add some fill in to the cabin. Pics are -
cabin in place
1 of the brackets is reversed to illustrate.

I thought you were going to cut it up and use it as spare bits for the county... ( I would have)
you're closer to the people who needed the bits than I am and while I could get them I thought it would be easier from your end.
No biggie, good luck with the sale.

I cut a length of aluminium as a base for the cabin extension and jury rigged to get the correct clearances. Luckily one of the rear panels is straight enough to provide the infill.

Well it may slow down over Chrissy, BTW I've never done anything this radical, so bear that in mind, if there are any mistakes you will see em here.!!
This pic shows the infill and the rear quarter panel it was cut from. There is just enough panel to do the job. Another way would be to use a LWB tub, but I'm on a budget. Also I decided to remove the series 3 filler as the newer 'fenders dont have them and the reason just might be an ADR that prevents fuel passing thru or communicating within the cabin. I'll either relocate it off the cab rear or continue to fill the under seat secondary tank via under the driver seat. Now that I'm thinking it will probably be running 95% on LPG anyway.

Infill has gone into Driver side. Some bog and we are done. The same will happen to the passenger side and then I'll do the cabin upper sides from the series 3. The interesting bit will be the roof grafting at the front to a County windscreen.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/12/91.jpg[/IMG]
I've found a good spot for some secure storage behind the seats. I'll fit a toolbox thats just the right size and re use one of the lockable hatches that came with the white County. Maybe a job for later as i want to get this roadworthy as a priority.

A bit more progress, despite Chrissy. The tray is on and brackets done, it may be sitting a bit high, as I allowed for the swampers to fit. After some serious offroading I will know better. The cabin was a bit wobbly because its extended 150mm so I re used the lower rear verticle panel from the station wagon - the one the front seatbelts fit to, cut off the ends and used it as a brace.Solid as a rock now and also will provide a good point to fit the seat belts. No need to drill any holes as they were already there. I've decided to hold off on lp tanks, winch, rollover protection and sunroof fitting till this thing is engineered and registered.

Glue.
I put a panel in behind the "outer" or existing panel that overlaps the sides as much as possible and then made a "infill" panel flush with the existing panels and used glue on both, then just bogged it up. I'm relying on there being minimal stresses and if there are any I hope they go elsewhere- fingers crossed .
I've tried about 3 different glues and they all take 3 bloody days to dry and dry like sealastic. I reckon liquid nails would be as good as any, probably better and 25% of the cost..
I took your tip from the Grommet tutorial about needing more room. Thanks.

I realized I never made provision for seatbelt anchorages so back a couple of steps goes I... Seeing as I had the seat box and cabin off I decided to fabricate the toolboxes I thought of earlier. I figured I probably will never get round to it in the future. The measurements are 140cm across x 15cm deepx 21cm wide with 2 hatches. NOW I find there are no keys for the latches:mad:. Oh well, they were freebies anyway.

Just a note using liquid nails or sim to fix the panels. It will flex slightly and the filler will crack.
So if this is a Permanent body mod and your keeping it like this then you will have to weld the panels 1st.

Yup, I found that out when I removed the body to do the seat belt fittings. It opened up.
I can't weld ally, so I might just rivet. There is'nt much panelwork.

Sikaflex is the answer:)

Sikaflex is the answer:)
Yes I agree 100%, Sikaflex is a tremendous product, I will not use other brand. The trick is not to squash the product out of the joint. Using a thin flat washer as spacer between the plates when fit the rivets will reassure that the bond will be perfect and the Sikaflex will be not squashed.
Sikaflex is used for holding side panels in bodies of large coaches and cladding in building without problems.

So much for making registration a priority:(.
Winch 3/4 installed, there was a winch prior to this one so just a case of making a new bracket.

I bought this canvas & frame off Ebay for $500 incl freight. It needs lowering and was 100mm shorter than advertised, but it will do.

Bilsteins up front, the rear ones are away being rebuilt.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/01/175.jpg[/IMG]
I had to make up a compartment under the middle seat to accomodate the 3x diff lock actuators. Anywhere else would have meant extending the vacuum hoses. P.I.A. to seal up.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/02/485.jpg[/IMG]
Also, I went back to the original panelwork, ripped off the backing panels, rivetted/countersunk some screws to strengthen it. Used Sikliflex that dries semi hard ( 425??)

Well the holidays are over and back to the obsession:angel:.
The engineer visited and the only requirement was that I extend the seatbelt anchor plates down to the original bodywork. He did'nt seem keen on me fitting a lap sash for the middle seat, preferring I buy an approved seat with it already fitted - not likely in the short term.

Central locking & alarm going in. Note the two white arrows. The left is a bracket to hold the actuator and the right is the bend req to line up the connecting rod. I was lucky, this worked after one minor relocation. I hope the mud doesnt get to it. Time will tell.

Fuel tank is connected up and she runs just fine - whew...:p
I've ordered cabin brackets from Qld, so in the meantime I straightened out the $50.00 Jackaroo bullbar, stripped it back as there was rust under some paintwork and killrusted it. BTW dont spray Etch primer over new paint as it makes a perfect paint stripper:o. Lost a couple of hours there.:(

The jack will rub the top bar which is intended as it stabilizes the process

Bracket on the other side for recovery point, this will also connect direct to chassis, the black bracket I made is held to the chassis with 3 x 1/2" bolts and one 7/16";)

I've finished off the bullbar and grafted the m12 eyebolts from the old Landie. I made up some brackets that transfer the load to the chassis. I reckon a snatch strap should break first with this setup.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/02/112.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/02/113.jpg
Rebound straps replaced, I also swapped the radius arms over as the white County's were a bit flogged from carrying all that weight.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/02/114.jpg
I found an inbuilt safety feature of the jack arrangement, not that I wanted too, but the whole vehicle shifted when I was measuring full travel and ended up like this.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/02/111.jpg
I scored a windscreen surround for $50.00 off ebay ( & $30 freight) so now I dont have to cannibalize the red one too much just yet. The doors line up pretty good and the side steps have been strengthened and lower trim fitted to pass side.

1st rule when working with HiLift Jacks....
Never rely on the jack to hold the car.... they are 2 unstable...
Many a bloke has a scar from a Hilift....
Also, is that jack shaft now bent????
If so..... Bin it....
DeeJay
25th February 2008, 09:46 PM
Rule 2
Never sneeze when your vehicle is balancing :D.
It'll press out in the pipe bender I just bought. Before that I used to put em on a brick and run the Landie up & down, sometimes jumping up & down on the bullbar to get it just right.
Dunno about binning it, I'm of Scottish descent- Why ??
( BTW it flexed back and would have 1" bend if you laid it on the floor)

The cabin brackets arrived from Gympie, so I was able to fit the rear section with a new seal. I removed the old series 3 roof from the gutter and decided to join it to the County channel at the rear. Do'h , I had to file out the holes for the pillar as there is a difference and it wont align with the door.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/706.jpg
Bolt holes filed to bring it pillar out
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/707.jpg
Aligning County roof with Series roof, It looks like I can have around 150mm overlap. If you're wondering why I cut it lenghtwise its because I never started out to make a ute and basically carved up the old damaged body so I could take it to the scrappy. Another D'oh but fixable.

It will be interesting fixing this damage
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/709.jpg

I found hairline fractures in the joins and figured the door bracing needs upgrading. I was slamming it a fair bit to get it right, but better to do this now before the paint job.
Template.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/511.jpg
I used a sheet of aluminium same stuff as everything else. It can double as a pocket for torch & maps etc. Both sides done. It sits out about 85 mm
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/512.jpg
Upper side panel fitted. Next is bog & filler.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/513.jpg
I've tacked on the side rail connection point for the bullbar, took a bit of aligning.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/514.jpg
Also, I decided the tray needs resizing & the easiest way was to remove the decking. At least the house smoke detectors work well as I had to grind off the screws as they were rusted in.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/03/515.jpg
I've also found a possy for a 375mmx1400 gas tank. It will give 114 usable litres. Matting was used as a template. I need to revamp that support plate as its in the way.

Your rear cab lower section will still crack the filler and paint as you have not welded or bonded the panels firm. This still allows some flex and filler does not like flex.
Cheap fix... Sixaflex that sets rock hard and rivers every 1 inch or so..
Or take it to get welded

Perhaps a single hoop internal rollbar that ties into the pillar to make it rigid would stop the flex too, and add some rollover safety if you stuck a diagonal or two in there running back from about the seatbelt mounting point to the bottom corner below the new "pockets".

With plenty of LPG capacity, around 185 litres, I've decided to go dedicated LPG, nothing fancy, just getting rid of the carby and putting in an impco butterfly setup. It will get done professionally of course, once she's on the road.

Attached are some pics of the Red County mods to accomodate LPG "scuba" tanks. Basically, they won't fit unless the protective guard is removed from the tanks, there are 4 screws holding them on, and to get the correct orientation with the tanks a corner of the floor support bracket needs removing with an angle grinder. Also the rear chassis member needs cutting back a bit.
Floor support. You can see the cuts on both of them.

Back to the project...
I got distracted by quite a few tonne of redgum at the right price (free) from the road widening nearby. Its all cut & stacked, so next winter will be warm at home.
I got rid of the flat plate on the Salisbury diff, its not as shaved back as I had on the Red County, but should lessen the bulldozer effect in ruts. Trick is to use those ultra skinny discs & cutting. Grinding heats it up too much and may fry the gasket.

Fitting up the main fuel tank. I got cold feet over 100% gas as I want the option of desert or extended travel.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/622.jpg
I'm putting in a brace with the idea of fitting a 4 point harness for my 7 year old. If the engineer won't certify it I'll have to go back to the lap belt
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/623.jpg
I shortened the tray to 1840mm as thats what the canopy is. Its enough for little ol me to sleep in. Front hoop will double as an unofficial rollbar.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/596.jpg
I will make up a bracket to hold the spare between the cab and tray. There is 250mm, should be enough for the swampers.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/624.jpg
I know its a strange arrangement but I kinda changed my mind too many times. It may be different again next week....

The tray is finally on for good - although its removeable. All the brackets are done, all aligned etc. I also have made a bracket- the angled one- to hold the spare.
This is the main rollbar/ canvas bow. I welded 3 vertical bars for extra cabin protection. Dexion is for the mudguards.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/425.jpg
There is a couple of storage opportunities underneath, so I put down some aluminium sheet before I put the tray back on. Its pretty thick stuff, about 8mm as it came from the seat box that had the Rangie seats on it. I might put a 3rd battery there with access via a hatch in the tray floor.
See below.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/426.jpg
I also can put a 6" tube (downpipe) across the tray near the gas tank. I used a roll of matting to measure it. Also installed the front of the rear mudguards
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/427.jpg
Tail lights are in, yet to be connected.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/428.jpg
Next will be the tray sides and floor plus the floor for the spare wheel, painting etc. Then the driver side rock slider/rail. I'm trying not to think of whats left, theres still a fair bit.

Fitting up & modding the fuel tank from the wagon
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/16.jpg
I cut out the filler as it was too high & would foul the tray
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/17.jpg
Fitted with a strengthener that the engineer wanted. I'll get around the same fill - 72 litres from memory. Vapour space is similar.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/18.jpg
This is the spare wheel tray, not sure what else I will put there yet. It sits over the large gas tank.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/19.jpg
Fitted up some worklights, they cost less than $25 each incl h3 globes. Spare is locked in with the old caravan wheel lock.

The mudflaps are on now & I did a lockable petrol cap. Also wired up the gas tanks for a fuel guage as I found some wires going to the dash that were there for previous long range petrol tanks. The rims have had a rough paint job, they'll get galvanised later.

Side rails are on the driver side, the supporting brackets were
strengthened to take the vehicles weight
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/05/403.jpg
I fabricated this child support brace as my 7 year old really wanted a racing harness & the lap only belt is not really any use at all. Hopefully the engineer will OK it. If nothing else its added strength to the cab area (& weight  )

Whoops, this isn't too clever. Trying to match the County roof with the Series cab.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/05/171.jpg
I think I'll have to invest in some aluminium sheet and try to get this to match up better. Unfortunately the front donor County roof had a couple of holes for air vents and I couldn't take it further back, but it does'nt seem to match anywhere. I cant use the County rear as it has the rear door gap & is square anyway.

The engineer looked it over with no major drama's, he even indicated the safety bar for the middle harness belt would get approval. Now I have to get it to his place  for full approval. Probably a towie job.
I have an "L" shaped garage and had to get the red Landie in to dismantle
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/745.jpg
So I cut up some 6mm steel and bought 12 castors from Bunnings.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/07/1101.jpg
It took a bit of jiggling but I got it around OK :)
I made a bracket for the El Cheapo driving lights I have, it was made up from a grab handle and dexion. So the whole lot is El Cheapo.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/07/1102.jpg
They are down low as I need ( I think) all the air I can get through that radiator.
Sparkie is visiting next week and I'm working on the tray base. I could.nt ger 3mm Ally checkerplate - 6 week wait- so I got 2.5mm & I'm gluing it on 7mm plywood which should be strong enough.
DeeJay
22nd July 2008, 08:12 PM
The sparkie visited & sorted out the charging, its fairly belting out a charge now. Also the headlights problem was because of 100w Cibie inserts that only had the wiring upgraded to within 100mm of the globe. They melted the plastic connector housing and the molten plastic formed an insulating barrier. I upgraded the wiring all the way. Still the same size connecting terminals so I dunno.
See the smaller wire coming from the headlight housing on the right.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/07/344.jpg
Aluminium tray is on, Its only 2.5 mm so I contact glued 7mm marine ply underneath it. I enamel undercoated the ply which took a bit of doing as it soaked in a fair bit. Well thats my excuse for having done b*&%$@ all for a few weeks- waiting for the paint to dry
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/07/345.jpg
While the dash is off I've been doing all the things that will only mean removing it again. Driving lights, interior lights, rearview camera, fuel guages, engel wiring etc.
But there will probably be something I've missed.
I'm trying to work out where to fit one of these.

They are going to get the Swampers fitted, just waiting to hear how much blood the taxman wants off me this year. If I can afford it, they will be galv first -about $40 each. They are Nissan rims but only 6" that had the centres cut out and the spokes fitted by Eastern Wheel works here in Vic. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/520.jpg
Its a bit of a head turner, that never occurred to me until it happened. It goes really well, just ask the mitsibushi challanger V6 driver who absolutely thrashed his car off 3 sets of lights trying to get in front. Now that I know it can do it, I'm happy to drive it nice & steady and not worry about it. Besides, I want to get an idea of mileage as, the more I think of it, the less I'm inclined to get it put on gas as its only going to do 5,000 klm a year- coz I use the company car for most tasks.
I'm going up to Gembrook in a couple of weeks, muddy pics then.
One small job I might as well detail, maybe someone could use the idea.
How to secure the front of the tarp without putting vulnerable cleats as the spare tyre(s) will damage them. There are 3 eyelets.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/521.jpg
I saw one of these at Bunnings & it gave me an idea.
Cut it down & have a nut on the inside to screw the eyelets closed.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/522.jpg
Then drill a hole though the shank size and enlargen the inside to allow for the nut
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/523.jpg
All thats then needed is to secure the nut in place on the inside of the tray. I welded it on to a plate first - after drilling a hole for the bolt
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/524.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/525.jpg
I busted the lower screw, chinese junk, but it really only needs one as the bolt will hold it firm.
End result.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/09/526.jpg
With the spare in place this would also act as a theft deterrant, not necessarily for me, but if anyone else wanted to use the idea.

Well I,ve done enough k's now to get an idea of what to expect.
4.5 klm per litre or not even 13 MPG  Thats suburban driving without much thought to economical driving.
So LPG is definately getting hooked up. It runs just SO well on petrol, starts first pop, goes like stoomph , but at that rate its going to burn a big hole in the pocket.
This is my sums on the conversion.
Its going to cost $1500 after the gov't rebate, The twin tanks are ex the red county and I paid $750 for the 120 litre tank. So lets say $2250 out of pocket.
Petrol cost @ $1.56 per litre works out to 32.4 cents per klm
LPG @ 60 Cents per litre- allow 25% less efficient -is 17.7 cents per klm
SAVING 15.3 cents per klm.
$2250 divided by 15.3 equals 14,705 kilometres after which I'm ahead. Things may change, but even 20 or 25 thou is still worth it. I'll get about 600klm range @3.375 klm/litre.
Still, the smile on the dial is worth it.:D
Sleepy

Good onya Deejay for working out exactly how much it's costing you. I prefer not to look !:D:D. LPG will certainly be cheaper!

Hi,
My 74 RRC with 350 gets just under 4km/l on the highway on gas. It runs a tiny bit rich. Basic big Impco system.
You could watch the needle move on petrol in the past, but it had a partially blocked return line in the tank. About 4.5 - 5 km/l at a guess. Haven't wanted to try it on petrol since fix.
cheers, DL

Back to the drawing board:mad:
The LPG fitter pointed out that the LPG valve needs to be accessable to shut off in an emergency:o.Something that I know but forgot all about. Also the twin H66"s in the rear are 45deg tanks, not 90deg :wasntme:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/10/712.jpg
So, I sat down & improvised a "remote" valve closing device. (see the cable above).
I removed the tank valve knob & press fitted it to a nut
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/10/713.jpg
I welded the nut to a wheel (two shock absorber washers back 2 back)
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/10/714.jpg
I then rigged up the hand throttle off the red County to act as an emergency pull. The regs would most likely only say the valve must be able to readily shut down manually:angel: Its about 130mm of cable that, when pulled out, gives 2.5 turns - plenty to get normal flow. It also needed a spring behind to keep the tension up and stop the cable unwinding itself.
I'll put in a hatch in the tray above as I want to use the area under there as long term storage and to reset the valve (I hope not).
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/10/715.jpg
I need to drop the rear tank(s) cradle about 80mm as the valve protector cabinets hit the tray when I spin them around.
Plenty of clearance, even at 8omm lower.
Not 45deg and hits the tray channel
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/10/716.jpg
Plenty of room.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/10/717.jpg
It will give me more storage room above too. Every cloud has a silver lining ;) The rear tank valves can be reached from the back above the chassis.
Also, the tray sits about 20mm lower at the back than the front, another boo boo, but too much work there, mainly getting the fuel filler to work. Its hardly noticable.

The pull cable wont pass.
It has to be manual by hand and direct on the gas tap, not by cable.
I need to check AS1496, there will be a copy at work. I tend to agree, plus its a bit awkward, so I've cut a hatch in the floor. If they argue the valve cant be accessed when I've got a load on, I'll argue its the same for a Rangie or commodore loaded up.
The more recent industrial installations I've done ( I work for an LPG distributor) all have had air operated emergency valve actuation. We used to use cables, but maybe thats changed. I know that they rusted up if not used. The LPG tankers I drove 20 years ago all had cable stops, but they were spring loaded and pulling the cable tripped a cam. You had to crawl under the truck to reset them.
I'm simply not up to date. I let the engineers do all that

The gas conversion is getting fitted tomorrow, fingers crossed.
Not much work on the project been done, this has been my garage for the last month. Its being fully underpinned under the house.https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/11/628.jpg

Just read your entire thread. Your project looks great, wish I had the time and patience to complete something like that :BigThumb:

DeeJay,
Came back to your thread after having looked at it earlier. Great build.
Thinking of digging out a basement workshop and your garage renos also interested me. Not to hijack the thread perhaps I can contact you via PM on the excavations and what is involved.

Well the gas is fitted. Unfortunately the fitter ( Deacons) capitulated on trying to retain the twin air inlet arrangement. In fairness the other two fitters I got quotes off wanted to go to straight downdraft and then they avoided me anyway. - I think there were easier jobs around so I'm pretty happy with the conversion.
This is what it ended looking like after I cut out the bonnet.

Not to be beaten, I got to work to direct the air thru the snorkels.
I bought two old Holden air cleaners off a wrecker and started cutting.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/11/244.jpg
I basically made two air inlets into the cleaner

And here is the end result.

Now to find an aluminium genius to make me a "bump"
Couple of other jobs, I made a cabinet for the air compressor out of a waterproof ammo box.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/11/248.jpg
Its now mounted above the pass wheel
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/11/249.jpg
Also this heavy duty diff casing is fitted up.

Unfortunately the filler plug is a different size so the temp sensor will need to be refitted.

Have you thought about where your air compressor is going to draw air if its mounted in a water proof box and the over heating factor if run for long periods:cool:

Kind of.
I've got a sanden compressor that I reckon will hang under the V8, another "to do" job but I'll have to remove the guard to make a bracket.
With the electric jobbie the toolbox door swings open to let some air in - its only to pump up tyres- Doh I should have said- & I'm told by TJM that it will get too hot to touch normally anyway. I bought one of those old type chuffer spark plug compressors that I timed & it pumped up a 7.50x16 from 16 psi to 32 in 5 min- about the same time as the Bluetongue ( at 1/8th the price) , so I should get by if I use both, one spark plug is dead easy to access.

I've been flat out with the garage extension, so little done on the project:(.
However I,ve done a budget bonnet scoop - used an old wheelbarrow & baking tray:eek:. Not too pretty but not a lot of choice.
Also, I was lucky to stumble on a couple of rugged ex army cupboards. I think these were used by orificers -they are dated 1972 - exactly when I wore green. They are dustproof as well, with a side table. Different configerations. They cost $100 each, not bad value from Aussie Disposals. I will make up a removeable base and have a modular type setup with the engel etc so I can drop it on for trips.

Gawd, nearly a year since I did something with the Landie:eek: - apart from driving it of course:).
I'm hoping to do a Simpson Desert crossing in August next year & it wasn't worth getting a long range tank made up so I utilised the under tray area as Jerrycan storage. 2x 5 litres & 3x 20 litres, plus I can get another 10 litre one behind the right tail light, Some will be water. The rear two are accessed from underneath - above the towbar & the 2x 5l & 1x 20l are accessed through the floor hatch. They are sitting on marine carpet.

Where can I get a bullbar for $50???? :D And you did well with Clarke Rubber - I popped in there a few days ago to get the exact same thing, rubber to insulate my roof. Damn near broke into a cold sweat when I saw the prices....

Its in a post here somewhere, its a bullbar off a Jackaroo from a wrecker, and, yes, i did really well at Clarke's. The first roll I bought was unpriced & I think the manager had a liquid lunch. When I went back for the second roll I had to haggle, but still got half price.

Thought you was taking the Isuzu 110 on the simpson?
Its a tough call, the Chev trayback had been through the Simpson twice with the previous owner and its so set up for it, its hard to decide.
I really want to keep the Isuzu stock ( says he making side steps ATM) so it wouldn't be as easy to live with for camping.
My mate, who is putting the trip together has got a Toyota Surf and I'm half thinking of letting him take the Isuzu along, that way I know we will make it:D.

What route are you planning to take across the Simpson? This will have a bearing on distance and fuel requirements.
Also prevailing winds over summer can cause steep, high crests of soft sand on the dunes, which can be tough going early in the season (until many other vehicles knock them down a bit).

I'm told we are going the "easy" way from West to East. Its a trip I've never done, but will start to research it soon, I've got plenty of 4wD mags lying around.
I could say I've been across the Simpson before, but that was in a Cessna :)

Well, its been 6 months, so time to drag out the thread & bring it up to date.
I've done a few weekends away & that got me thinking about a modular camping setup. I opted for aluminium toolboxes when I won a 1600 cm one for $305 on Ebay:eek:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/06/900.jpg
I was able to fabricate up some shelves to take the Army boxes.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/06/901.jpg
So then I had to pay retail to match up the other side :D - Actually it was a not as well made one, but the right size - 1450cm so I could fit in the Engel
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/06/902.jpg
That left 610cm in the middle to fit a bed, it will be foam over some ply panels that just sit over the plastic crates. I can still access under the tray with this setup.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/06/903.jpg
These drawers are from the wreck, the previous owner left them in for me- all hand made..I'll have it so they can transfer back to the station wagon like this....
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/06/904.jpg
The Engel slides out & off as its fitted with the Engel quick release slides
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/06/905.jpg
The whole setup weighs around 150kg & can be removed in under 30 min taking it back to the bare tray - I still get firewood & tiploads etc. The canvas fits nicely over it all.
And I do get it dirty :D

Thanks DeeJay for the pics and advice.
It's a big job, but the truck would be perfect and I'm keeping this one for ever so the investment is sound.
