I have a 99 defender. After coming back from trips on rough roads and having to weld the spare wheel mounting in the back door, I bought the Kamar spare wheel carrier.
I understand the rear door was changed in 2002. Did that fix the problem? If I go to the new defender, should I take the carrier off and put It on the new vehicle? The other benefit was that it may have reduced the dust a bit (though not much).

Cheers
Lofty

g'day from just across the hi-way.....we have probably exchanged waves

wheel carriers are not cheap so i would look at taking it with me......just remember to keep the old bits

the door on my 95 has been welded numerous times andhad the bracing kit fitted.....the spare now sits on the bonnet

My 94 used to break the frame so I had steel plate welded right across the top of the door frame below the window and down to the "H" frame and through the "H" frame inside the door to more evenly spread the load.
All the plates where cut to fit inside the frames, flush with the surface so the door trim went back on nicely.
Never a problem since and a lot cheaper than a wheel carrier.
Steve.

The rear door did change around that time & while I haven't seen any cracking on the new doors, it's still a lot of weight hanging off it.
I'd change the carrier over to the new car.

new 1 piece doors are great - just be careful to check if your wheel carrier fits the MY02+ doors:

my 03 model had the rear door repaired twice under warranty and then finally the wheel mount cracked through, go the carrier.

hey Scouse - the MY07+ Defender rear door the same as the MY02+?I'd have to double check with Parts but I would imagine so.
