Land Rover Chassis, want are these Phoenix?

I noticed these welded to my chassis, they look like coil spring mounts to me.

Would I be correct in thinking this?
There is not anything on top of the axles to attach to.

Mmm, that's got me stumped. They sure look like, and are positioned like coil spring mounts. anything else out of the ordinary on the chassis??

I will have a look around, I did notice that the leaf springs are heavy duty 13 leafs back, 11 front is this usual?

I think 9 is normal except on the front of the ambulances which had 11. Dinty will be able to correct me though ;)

I have a couple of photos of RAEME modifying vehicles in strange ways for kicks, maybe this was one such project?? I'd give underneath a once over to see if there is anything else?

I have a few differnt mount holes for shock absorbers on the rear, tubed & welded, different heights & angles.
And my rear bar is different.

How many cross members should there be?

Some people used to put LC Torana and other small car springs under the chassis to beef up the standard springs for extra capacity.

But that was before poly air springs etc.

That could be the case Diana, but considering it's a SWB, and already has heavier leaves?? maybe the heavier leaves were added and the coils removed?

xmember looks right, but without the PTO hole, is it a plate over, or maybe a home made replacement xmember?

I would have thought that the leafs where beefy enough.
Maybe the old girl used to be used for heavy duty towing of some kind?

Just can't figure out how they would have attached to the axle.

From the pictures, as far as I can see, the coil would be in front of the axle, probably on a plate clamped between the axle and the spring. This would have been removed when the heavier duty springs were fitted, I'd assume.

Possibly they were only a trial and discarded as unsatisfactory, fitting extra spring leaves instead. The lower mount was removed as it was bolted on and the upper stayed since it was welded.
