Great action shot! Mine's the same but it's about to get an LT95 instead. I really have enjoyed the TorqueFlite, though. I'm very tempted to keep it but a manual is better for up here.

G'day
After seeeking advice on this forum I purchased a 1989 Highline in very good original condition.
It had spent all its life in Dee Why doing shopping duty. I bought it to tow my trailer and that is what it mostly does.
I have had this for a few years now. I have had it utterly bogged and nearly rolled it a few times in rough country.
I really like it!

Has anyone come across many Lincoln Green 2 doors before? I can't recall seeing one before but I found one locally that needs cosmetic resto but it's original, straight and complete.
It's a silver bumper model... from what i read the CKD models did not come in this colour so i'm assuming it's either an early one or an import... anyone know? Pic of colour for reference...

Hay all,
Well been a long time since drinks BUT I thought I should through some pics and write a bit about my Rangie... his name is Greame.
Hes a 1986 hiline. I'm the third owner, the first two owned them for a long time each, and the second owner used him to go around Oz twice!! HE did a great job building it.
I have mainly cleaned things up, new gearbox stuff like that, gas conversion. etc.
So the specs;
4.6 With hotwire 97 disco top end,
R380 gearbox with fancy cooler and custom cooler lines
Gastec LPG conversion (thanks Bee utey) Great kit, stand alone ECU under floor tanks, hence a tiny main petrol tank
Custom alloy Radiator and EL ford thermo fans
LR 2 inch lift kit,
LR centre console, had to mofiy to suit new GB
LR twin sill tanks
LR water tank
Alloy gear knobs
Rear Maxi drive locker and axles and strengthened housing
Polly rear air bags
ARB front and rear bars.
33 simex and 31 for daily duties.
75mm flexi flares.
Custom brake lines extensions
EFS 2in suspension lift and shocks.

Things to do next;
Winch and front bar, as ya can see from the pics, it get caught on the ass, so I want to fab my own Front and rear bars. Roll cage and cargo barrier (I really want this).
A couple of things here and there to clean up. Maybe a front locker. and and I lick of paint. Just to neaten things up.
Cheers NAT

Chrysler 318-360 are easy to do. Auto or 4 speed. Std exhaust manifolds fit no prob. Alloy heads are nice and cheap these days. Stroker kits to 408. The best none efi petrol conversion in my experience.

Nice. I've never seen a cargo barrier/rollbar combo like that on a Rangie. How on earth is it attached? That point is where I've gotten stuck so far. My four-year-old rides in the back seat of my Range Rover, so I've been thinking of putting in some sort of a decent barrier given all the tools and crap behind her in the cargo area.

its not as bad as it looks, ok well maybe it is, its got a output shaft that is busted, rust in two pannels, needs a new injector in the plenum, new belts, roof lining, front and rear bar and door seals, also needs the floor fixed as there has just been a dodgy cut it out and rivit a new piece on job. Anyhow, it should be in the shed next week and ready to pull down a bit and build up, best part is it was free. So hopefully pics of progress to come :)

It was my brother in laws, he stuffed it and has not the time or money to fix it, so win win. If you look behind this one you will be the back end of another rangie, that be the parts car. Now I just to find some bits n pieces that are not on the parts car. :)

Do you mean the cold start enrichment injector? If so, don't worry about it. They don't need it unless it is well below zero.

Got this a few weeks ago, 1985 with only 160,000kms, no rust (for a Classic) but has had the original motor and Torqueflite replaced with a 1988 EFI motor with extractors, ZF 4 speed and LT230 with an Edelbrock 1404 carb and Edelbrock Performer manifold. I'm in the process of tidying it up and finishing a few things to get it to run.

Hey Grimace What does your rear suspension consist of? Are those treps 35 or 37?

Hey Neale, the rear suspension is standard link geometry but I have got cranked rear arms and a ball joint spacer. The upper shock mounts are all custom and raised 75mm over standard. This was to assist in fitting the 14 inch travel Bilsteins.
With the soft spring rate I feel it is now at the limits of the rear ball joint.
The tyres are 37s sticky compound. I love them!!!

4th January 2014, 05:30 PM
what you had to do to run the 37s
The diffs, if sticking with Rover, need everything replaced and to be pegged IMHO. Although I have not busted anything for a long time I feel I have been very lucky and each run lately I feel something is binding, or that something is about to fail.
The next mod was to cut, and cut.... Then cut some more. It still rubs hard with only a 1 inch body lift, but it's never bothered me.

I look pretty good in the back seat while the butler

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/01/173.jpg
Pushed the bloke to cover the steering wheel and he had it done in cow leather. For cryin' out loud, I chase these things.

Dunno why, but he made a fuss about having an unbroken instrument housing, what's a speedo anyway?
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/01/175.jpg
Sometimes he mutters about the character marks from years of being in paddocks and the like before he bought it for me.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/01/176.jpg
For some reason beyond me, he relishes in the bumper bars, what's the fuss? I can get a cow or sheep to move better than any bar.

What a birk, he and I sit on the seats. Of course my seat is bigger.

They are all worthy! I would love a stock RRC, but I am too tight to fork out the $$$ for a decent one and at the moment cant afford more v8 registrations.
If I can get the missus a 4cyl I will buy a decent RRC that will be more of a stockish tourer.

1988 RRC. Dual fuel, Miky T 33" (305 70 16?) -25mm offset Dynamic rims. Flat Dog 75mm flares with conservative guard cut. (Needs more cut as it scrubs a little, might also need body lift.) Disco diffs and axles but still RRC dual line brakes. ARB front and rear bars. Tough Dog 35mm lift springs with adjustable shocks. LRA Rear swing out spare tire carrier. LRA Snorkel. Here's my two -
Angie, when I first picked her up from the transport depot.
(the buggers broke off the side mirror, damaged the side of it, ran it out of fuel, then flattened the battery and damaged the negative battery cable from excessive cranking)
She's a 1985 3spd 727 auto, with dual fuel, extractors, holly conversion, ARB bars front and rear, Oscar Cibies, Billy suspension and 133,000km's.
I find the bilstein shocks a bit harsh though TBH. (I'm thinking of going back to original spec soft boges or something.)
It was someone's extreme pride and joy once upon a time. The undercarriage and drivetrain has been very highly detailed at some stage in the past.
Tracked down and bought, the original Victorian Green and White number plates for her too! (Not fitted yet)
And now for the strangest part........
I bought her off ebay, from a bloke in Kyogle NSW, who had bought it from a car dealer in the Melbourne CBD years earlier and had it shipped up.
I live in the Vic Yarra Valley and turns out by pure fluke, (of all the places) it was a local car many years ago, literally from the next suburb over. :o
Rangie's sure love to travel around, but somehow, they always seem to find their way home! :p
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/04/321.jpg (http://s1238.photobucket.com/user/xfalconSParKyDave/media/1985%20Rangie%20-%20Angie/Memorycard12664.jpg.html)
Why Angie you may ask?
Here's why :) -
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/04/322.jpg (http://s1238.photobucket.com/user/xfalconSParKyDave/media/1985%20Rangie%20-%20Angie/Memorycard12699.jpg.html)
And this is my ongoing project, Gramps aka 'The Beast' - bought/bartered from a family friend 10 odd yrs ago. Prior to that, it was bounced around between a few other family friends.
Yr's ago, I traced the original owner, and actually spoke to him on the phone. Confirmed that it was indeed his vehicle.
Once again, he was only local, living in the mountain ranges not even a half hrs drive away from me. :D
I have 90% owner history, and as per Angie, Gramps has traveled with different owners but yet eventually found his way home again. (pretty damn close anyways)
He's a 1983 3.5ltr original twin carby straight petrol 4spd manual.
He's running cut down and widened standard Rangie rims. (15x8)
Cibie spotties, Old Man Emu suspension, Pacie extractors, and one Lukey Super Turbo muffler. (for one heck of a grumbly note) :p
When I got him, 1st gear was stripped, and I quickly tired of 2nd gear starts all the time, so I gave myself a crash course in gearbox rebuilding, and spent $1,500 replacing almost everything in the box, except for 4th/output shaft, the main shaft, the other shafts and the center diff - which badly needs welding and re-machining, as the pinion gear shims were so long-gone, that they've worn grooves in the casing.
Got to be pretty good friends with Andrew at then Rangie Spares (now LRA) as I was in there literally every week, buying parts off him.
Gramps has unknown km's as the cluster only goes to 10's of thousands, but the original engine was freshly rebuilt just before I bought it.
It's showing 25,000km's approx.
I also tracked down and bought the original number plates for Gramps too, (which I haven't fitted yet.)

Does 'Ange' have a small hub cap set into the centre of each wheel?
Paul
Yep.... centercaps which can be popped out, as per the early 80's onwards steel wheels with the larger center hole.
Two have the raised 'Range Rover' lettering on them, and the others are just smooth plastic, so maybe they're copies?
These ones -
Land Rover Range Classic Black Wheel Badge Center HUB Caps SET OF 4 NRC8254 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LAND-ROVER-RANGE-CLASSIC-BLACK-WHEEL-BADGE-CENTER-HUB-CAPS-SET-OF-4-NRC8254-/291122378388?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ARange+Rover&hash=item43c83ef694)
Interestingly, Angie has the large soft foam side bumper strips too, which I think are a Bearmach accessory. (maybe dealer fitted?)
They also have the words 'Range Rover' on the rear quarter pieces.
The white has all worn off the lettering though, so they're very hard to see.
Also, the four cut down and widened stockies on Gramps are not the original wheels, but were fitted by one of the family friend owners some 20yrs ago.
Of those four centers, three have the small center hole (early wheels) and one is mismatched as it has the larger center hole.
Gramps spare, is still the original 16x7 though.
They really are fun things to own, Rangie's..... they're always a journey of discovery. :)

Hi all,
Just introducing my current project/tourer/weekend wheeler.
It's a 1983 3.5 with an LT95, and affectionately nicknamed 'the sofa' by friends on a recent easter trip due to it's ability to soak up the bumps and flex over most things, also a damned comfortable ride!
This is how I got it:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/04/118.jpg (http://s1348.photobucket.com/user/mrlr/media/IMG_1682_zps25c3673f.jpg.html)
Mods include a 2" lift, 235/85-16 Bighorns, Custom front bar, sliders, snorkel and rear bar by me, +5" shocks, bottom dislocation cones (a stop gap before some decent flexy coils), holey bushes, and a few other little things.

If it's straight, you may want to keep it in one piece, as these models are right in the middle of the trough old cars hit before they're worth a lot more later on because nobody took care of them when they were worthless . . . just a thought, anyway. OK, OK, I'm a tragic . . . I'll admit it! :D

I can tell it is an older photo for the Green 2 door by the rego sticker but any chance you have more photos/info of it? Resprayed? Front panels look similar to Lincoln Green but doors, roof and quarters look a bit richer in colour.

Yes Lincoln green 79 model, it has been resprayed, but you can see the original paint under the bonnet, and it is very close to the same color only not shiny.
That photo is a little over saturated. looks stock under the bonnet as it's got the original carbs modified for the 4.6 and rectangular air filter elements that cost me $90 for the 2!

I do not know much about the setup of the strombergs, it was done thu Graham Cooper, but can photograph a note that was added to the manual, might mean something to someone with knowledge of these carbs. The head work mentioned is some porting and matching the ports to the manifolds, also has headers and 2.5 inch exhaust. Cannot fault the running of it, is smooth and adequate power across the range. Haven't measured but seem to use less fuel than my 3.5.

Hi Milld,
I can't find the grille for the cut outs (they are in a box somewhere), they are not very flash, they look like the perforated metal grilles used to ventilate the underfloor space of brick veneer houses, i hope you know what i mean.

I was a previous owner of this vehicle. Previous owner to me had fitted the brick vents... They are available from bunnings etc.
I bought it as a traded vehicle on a discovery at a cheap car yard. Had a 253 and TH400 fitted. Engineered but not registered. I got it registered and then fitted maxi drive McNamara rear diff and suspension from my 90 Hybrid. Q78 swampers lra flares m8274 etc. then fitted a Chev small block.
Was starting to fit Gq patrol diffs but changed mind and wrecked out. Engine ended up supercharged in a 90 4 door. auto in a cruiser tray. Transfer in a Volvo portal axled jeep cj7. Diffs in a comp RRC.

I'm using industrial AV (antivibration) mounts. These are round 70-75mm diameter and 38mm thick with a M10 stud centred on each side. Essentially a steel plate bonded to a rubber core.
They are a straight swap for the stock rover mount pucks used at engine and transfer, but much softer.
In the front mine is using these on the original V8 chassis mounts with brackets to the engine. But the angle on these isn't ideal for the weight of the Isuzu or the vibration directions of a 4 cyl. So I plan to remake them at about 50 degrees from vertical (40 degrees from Horizontal) while still using the same AV mounts.

And I can say with conviction i've definitely bitten off more than I can chew, so you'll be seeing me around these parts a fair bit I reckon.
Hello, i'm Dave, and I now have a 1982 Range Rover that I am going to try and make good as new. So far, i've evicted loads of spiders (including a fairly large black one that jumped out at me), removed a fair amount of mouse poo from the engine bay, given her a bit of a wipe down, and gone over as thoroughly as I can without any reference to see what is missing (very little), what can be fixed easily (quite a lot), and what i'm going to need to get someone else to do (nothing until a full-time job looms into view).
The plan is to have her fired up by my birthday in early March, moving under her own power soon thereafter, and if all goes well, in for a roadworthy by the end of April.
Then i'll work on her on weekends, with occasional four-wheel driving for good measure. Ultimately I want to buy a newer example and have this one off the road and do a ground-up restoration.

Red paint is a serious PITA on an older RRC............ everyone wants to buy it, you want to keep it............ red absorbs all UV and degrades even with the best clear coat x 5 on top........ white is great for a keeper.

That's acrylic laquer by the looks of it ... No clear there. I dare him to run a buff and some heavy cutters over it ........ He'll be amazed at how it comes up with the oxidisation removed.
That paint looks amazingly sound in the piccies (though piccies have been known to lie). If it's straight, you could just scuff, mask and recoat that one for very little.

Aside from a few rust bubbles, and the lower tailgate in a few places (all just surface thankfully), she's in remarkably good nick. Even just wiping with a damp cloth gave me a lot of hope that a good buff will really help.
But the paintwork is the least of my issues. Step one: get the engine to start. If anything it'll shut my housemate up...

If it was running when it was parked up ... I see no big deal in getting is running again .... Pull the plugs and wind it over to get some oil circulating, put some fresh fuel in and let the electric fuel pump do it's magic .... check you have some spark at the plugs and she should fire right up.

The headlights are new Hella HD H4 reflectors with 130/90w globes. They are wired with separate high current SSR's on each beam.
The pair on the top of the bar are 9 LED Great Whites, I use as fogs, the lower pair are 18LED units as additional high beam.
They are bright.
Price is err.. not cheap. but I know the supplier, so for me, they were.

yep Tony & I go back a long way.
the 9's I've had for a long time had them on my SL for a few years.. they are great. I bought the 18's for a bit of a laugh, because I was heading up to qld and wanted to scope some backroads at night on the trip up.
They performed flawlessly. Tony had the fog covers waiting for me when I got home.
I have one more project though. a set of 55w 4600k sylvania H1 HID globes in a 5.75 Hella parabolic pin beam (aircraft landing light) insert. I have a feeling they will get a lot further down the road than those XGD's. I had a set in my SLC and with normal h1 100w halogens they would throw nearly 1km down the road, the main benefit being the beam was concentrated so there was no scatter to the sides of the road.
So when I find a really nice set of 5.75" housings, I'll give it a try. A set of 4 on the roof would be very menacing indeed, but they will pull a fair bit of current compared to the LED's.

Fog lights are designed to illuminate under the fog - they work best when down as low as possible.
Yes, but you may notice there is a) no room to mount them underneath without exposing them to damage, and b) the covers are swappable / removable.
I had the fog covers on the 18's for a week. then swapped them over to the 9's.
For the moment they are extremely effective as fogs, they have already seen use in heavy fog, as where I live is prone to it nearly every morning.
Have a lot more work to do on the front bar, so everything is temporary, location-wise. I still have a winch to fit and some holes to cut in the bar for DRL's.
Oh, fwiw here is a ****ty underexposed pic I took on the way home last week from the iphone of just the 9's on.... without any headlights. and with the blue covers still on (didn't feel like cleaning bugs)

Hopefully she was. There's a fair bit of dereliction under the bonnet. Will need new belts for sure, and the fuel tank lock means I won't be getting anything in there until i've fixed it. The tank will be coming out for an empty and check next week - based on my '81 Golf GTi that was stood up for a couple of years before I got it, there was a lot of rust in the bottom that gradually made its way into the fuel filter, which led to an awkward grinding-to-a-half incident on Kingsway one day.
I'm going to start a new thread once I start work on her, and keep that one updated, to save this one getting clogged up!

Everything is still working and I will keep it so. When the time comes I may put in a 4.6 as an upgrade for towing. That's a really good idea for an lpg tank ... you could move the spare out to the rear bar ... and put a donut tank where the spare currently resides. I bet capacity it tiny though.

Hi Shane,
the tank capacity is 80 litres. The install was done by Graeme Cooper, we spent quite some time looking at different tank configurations before I settled on this. It was decided to mount the tank on the right side to make the filling easier, also to hide the filler in with the petrol filler so to keep the classic looks. I moved the sub woofer to the left in place of the spare wheel which is mounted on the rear bar, another of Graeme Cooper's fabrications. The space lost in the cargo bay is minimal as compared to the "scuba" style tanks. This also allows for a long rage fuel tank as well.
Cheers,
Phil
