Yep work in progress also daily driver even though I have company 4x4.
I shall be doing the bodywork this year and painting her the same green or going white, have not decided yet.
The interior will also be re-upholstered, new door panels made up and some drawers fitted to the back, then making some wheel carriers to carry jerry cans as well as the high lift jack.:D

Looking at fitting lift kit soon just waiting for quote from JC when he has a chance as a vehicle he is partsing out has a suspension lift in it.

A couple of pics of the current Rangies I own.

First is the 87 Hi-Line with all the goodies (maxi's lifted, wicnh, etc...) Not pretty but less pain when I do hit trees with it :twisted::twisted:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2377243870047273171hbWBaL)

Pic of the 76 2 door I picked up a while back and trying to get back on the road (time and work get in the way as well as not enough $$$). his one will be spared the grinder, but does need a respray as paint is well faded although not visible in the pics.

1994 (or 1995 depending who you believe) Range Rover LSE.

a.k.a "The Luxo-Barge"

It has (ex-factory):
- EAS (Air Suspension) this has been sorted and still works a treat.
- Soft Dash (Disco dash but with dual air con)
- Leather seats.
- Stereo system with 13 million speakers.
- Sunroof

Generally - it's a nice place to be.

Mods:
- Recovery points at front (since picture taken)
- Better headlight bulbs (mmm, blue/white light - pretty!)
- 3rd row of seats (fully complianced. Too small for adults, though).
- Airbag Man emergency kit (just in case the EAS valve block or computer fails - no problem !)
- ARB Rear Step.
- Discovery Steel Wheels

Sadly, it doesn;t get used off road much (Mrs Vlad not keen to get dents and scrapes on it). Happily I own a Defender for that !

Cheers :)

In all likelihood it'll be for sale within the next 12 months.

When is the new Falcon being released ?

(Long story. Missus wants a Falcon. Best time to buy current model Falcon will be when new one is released. It'll be cheaper. Then we will sell Rangie and by then (all things being equal) I will have a 300Tdi twin cab Defender to play in and replace the Rangie and my single cab Deefer. So there!).

I believe the orion is due out around agust. The BFIII will be a great car. Last of the line always are.

What do you reckon the rangie will go for?

VladTepes
17th January 2008, 03:11 PM
It'll go for as much as someone is willing to pay.
I have a few little things to do to her first.
(Fix a lock, ashtray etc. Nothing major).

The standard rr ones.....I carry 2 spares....they are cheap as chips
and with the little drive stub axle at the end makes a nice stress break point rather than something more expensive.
Have not minced one yet, although it is really easy to if you don't take it easy with
the front locker in and you come down hard on the front end and the wheels grab.

Thanks for the comments guys. I havent driven it since July and before that it was about 2 years. In july I let a mate drive it and he drowned the computer and injection system in mud so I'm just finishing getting it back up and running. Can't wait to hear the rumble again. I reckon the 2 door is the better shape.

how strong is the auto gearbox ? are you happy with it or would like to have a manual 4 sp. ?
Cheers
I'm happy with the 3 speed auto, the 4 speed auto is better than the 3 but would hurt the wallet when it poos itself.
The manuals have better gearing for down hill work than the autos, but I just
make sure I have my helmet on and mouth guard in.:)

Nice rigs guys ;)

This time of the year, and with bright blue skys the last few weeks, I doubt we will see any kind of mud at all. Will have to wait for winter.

Hey Loccor,
We had the solenoid of the starter break from the front drive shaft hitting it at Fraser Island at Xmas time (thanks to MR Auto we had another delivered within 24hrs to Orchid Beach), this was because the starter was either a P76 starter or one from a sedan. If you change to a rangie starter the solenoid is up to the side rather than underneath it.

Yeah, she did OK. The only thing im not sure of is when in low range and CDL engaged, if im in gear (1st or 2nd) and about to stop, I press the clutch in and I can hear a clank clank clank clank sound, then it stops. Not sure if thats just backlash through the diff or its the g'box.

But aside from that, it changes smoothly so im very happy :)

The LT95 have a reputation for being "clunky". Combination of center diff and driveline backash and gears in Transfer. Mine is the same. Your driving style will adjust to suit! A worn A frame ball joint can add to it.

I agree, my 76 was pertty bad clunkwise when I bought it but when I replaced the a-frame ball joint, the clunk was nearly gone apart from the usual backlash that the 95's have.

I hadn't driven a LT95 for a few years til I bought this Rangie so I had to adjust my driving style like you mentioned (especialy have an auto for so long you forget).

A Frame ball joint already replaced, so theres no clunk, just the backlash. I must say that I need to learn heaps... kept putting it into 1st gear in low range rather than 2nd!!

Rangier Rover - thats one flex you got there. Mine only needs to hold it in place as its just sitting on the lip of the spring retainer, so a clip will do the trick in holding it in place.

Depends how much time and money you want to spend. Reseting up all the diffs will help. If pins worn etc will need replaceing. End float im boxes also. Most like me just wait till it gets real bad or goes bang! ;)They will go a long time like it.

My old 2 door rangies - hopefully this works

It worked - after various edits

Alrighty, the mustard rangie (76 vintage) I bought in 96/97 to enable the sailing club to hire/borrow it to tow the Sharpie from Brisbane to Darwin for the Intervarsity Sailing Championships, basically I bought it one day and the next it was off to Darwin (it saw more of Australia than I had). It made it pretty much without hickup, although I think they had to push start it a couple of times - dead battery. At that stage it had no power steering and very original soft springs - in hindsight probably should have kept it as it had no rust:eek:. Swapped the interior for another that we got the motor out of, put a decent set of springs in it - there was probably more but too long ago to remember. The centre diff lock did not work at all.

Bought the Green one in 2000, had a friend ring me looking for one, I found this for him, then he decided against rangies and I ended up buying it. Fairly sure the previous owner owned a panel shop and during one of the slower periods he decided to spray paint it - it was previously army green (probably wouldn't have bought it if was still that colour). Unfortunately it already had rust which he removed but it came back and I took it off the road in late 05 when I found the Red rangie. Anyway the Green one has a sweet P76 with a holley:mad: and a reco 4 speed manual box. I have a donor 2 door to swap it all across if I get the urge although its not looking that good at this point in time.

My current rangie is a 1990 4 door with the motor still wearing in. Its a 3.9 slightly modified, ZF and a LT230 conversion after I broke the casing of the VC when the handbrake drum landed on a rock at Ormeau

well thanks gentlemen, my first post on this forum and i'm getting positive vibes already.
being a man of (very) little wealth i have been amazed at how inexpensive parts are. since i bought it i've renewed the brakes, shocks and springs and am part way through a complete suspension rebushing program. i'm currently waiting on a few rain days to try and stop the p.a.s. haemorraging (seal kit and a s/h pump) before i rebush the front end.
it has one slightly irritating 'foible' in that the gears will occasionally clash noisily from rest. i suspect a combination of worn clutch components and the notorious lt77 input shaft problems. it will only occur about 1 in 30 times and warns you by emitting a deep rumble as the clutch is depressed. interestingly if i am on any form of incline just letting the vehicle roll the smallest amount forward or back re-aligns everything and it will snick into gear just as easily as any other time. as i'm required to be available 18/7/180 it will be may/june before i can drop the gearbox out to make a fix.
it will also very rarely foul a plug at position A4, especially if not used for a few days.
other than that it is a joy to own and drive. my only mods have been to remove the driver's side seat height spacers (i'm 6'5"), fit a lights on alarm and to add that tjm rack which i bought for $118.
looking forward i would like to improve my tyres, currently yokohama geolander IIs, with something better suited to coarse bluestone forest tracks. i also want to look at improving dust sealage at the tailgate end and finally, to ditch the sunroof to further improve headroom. it all works fine but shows evidence of leakage during winter and the internal screen self opens and then rattles irritatingly.
thanks again for your vote of confidence in my careful selection of model. in truth it was the first manual one in my price range that popped up on ebay, nobody else bid and i won. it was in balmain sydney, with the owner o/s, so i hopped on a jetstar, bought a battery, checked the vital fluids and drove it 1020kms home in a rainstorm. fortune sometimes favours the brave, eh?

I love mine with a passion, but like you, cant spare big $$ on it and I too was surprised on how cheap parts where (much much cheaper than Jap stuff).

As Rangier Rover says, post up parts that you need and you never know, members here may have something to give for very little $$ or even free!!

Personally I think owning a vehicle is not just about driving it, but being involved in it.

Have fun ;)

Thats's what really ****s me about dickheads who rubbish LR's. Parts are not expensive if you know where to look so matenance can be done cheaply. Toyota parts are more than double in soem cases.

Re-On the cheap. This was the concept of project tight ****, my 76 Rangie. The idea was to get the vehicle going for less then $3K (included the $1K purchase price). I didn't include rego, I consider an ongoing cost on any project of all budgets. I've got it documented in the GCLRO members rides section, click here- http://www.aulro.com/afvb/gclro-members-rides/33164-project-sahara-76-rangie-2-door.html

Fair enough, I don't get beaten all that often but I guess I have to eat humble pie forcefully :mad:.

I think LR owners are a pretty conservative lot and we generally don't take to those who don't have one although there's some exceptions, which really suits me because I don't like most people anyway (people I know in the club and in my general life are all top people may I add. if they wern't, i wouldn't want to know 'em)

Re-attitudes. From my expreiences on the tracks, it seems that the yobbish attitudes in the 4WD fraternity are Jap 4WD owners. Until things have changed i'll still have the same opinion about them. Look at the coloundra 4WD club thread in the general section, tells you pretty much everything you need to know about this mob.

Call me ingorant or anything else I couldn't give a rats ****, I've never owned a Jap 4WD and I don't intend on doing so in the not too distant future.

i regularly use the latest toyota products for fire brigade purposes and whilst they are good they are not brilliant. a 'cruiser cab chassis we bought recently with the blown v8 diesel is definitely over-powered to the point that we have had to put a ban on the younger drivers using it.
sadly we also lost our 3 yo landcruiser wagon in favour of a prado d4d. a poor
substitute.
i think one of the beauties of range rover ownership is that when parts appear on ebay they are not so hotly contested for as they would be for the japanese makes. equally the vehicles themselves are so cheap that it is a tribute to the lack of imagination of buyers who can't see past the lack of a toyota badge.
another plus is the quality of information and support available from publications and forums. i'm glad to have found an aussie forum though because we have quite unique problems in terms of varieties of road types and weather conditions to deal with and the consequent wear and tear this leads to. the brits spend all their time talking rust and the yanks just go on about how much money they have wasted.
and before anyone assumes i'm a jap knocker here are a couple of vehicles i love almost even more than my rangie:

Well said. I second your comments
I love the Isuzu 4WD trucks and the Canters. It is not that I regard the Toyota's or Patrols as a bad vehicles, I just think that the Land Rovers are cheap to maintain and run and also not a bad vehicles.
Having said that, I do not think that the Patrol 3,0 lts is a engine in the same league than the Tdi300 or TD5.
My favorite vehicle is the Unimog bad the the cost is to high.

I recon if your gona go for bigger tyres, youll start getting into the realm of guard cutting, like I had too. Its hard to start doing these mods, it took me a while to convinve myself it was what I needed to do to fit 33x12.5's.

I like the colour too, suits the Rangie.

The bars come up often, until you want one;). ZF4HP are a great box. Only cost $50 to $60 to sevice if DIY. I do mine every 20000 (servere use) Use low range rather than lag on coverter when doing low speed work. Put ina larger cooler. If a 4.6 or other high tech donk goes in rule of long life is dont thrash it in overdrive or it will eat its self. I've seen these trany's do over 500000 if treated right. :) Again great find!

Thanks guys, yes it a nice Rangie, drives very well with great road manners to get you into the bush, the Bilstein shocks are brilliant on this car and the way it has been set up.

I've had the car for three years and bought as is, not sure if engine has been tampered with but I am sure it is standard other than the Motech. They are expensive from what I gather and can be dialed with the right program & a laptop to give quite a performance boost...this car flies its very quick when needed, it's awsome off road...wlthough like all 4x4's once the sump hits rock bottom in the mud hole, its stuck like anything else only it gets further in.

I've been contemplating a sale to buy another project vehivle but I find it hard to think about so probably will hold on to it a little longer. My main touer is the Defender and that I'll keep until I can't drive anymore.

Yeah I blew too many C&P's and the choice of gearing was a bit better.

She's ok for having just celebrated her 32nd birthday. It's taken 3 years to get to this point. Still have to finish off the interior etc

Goes well with the injection etc.:D:D:D

I might have to start a thread in the members rides section.

Not really, the rear is smooth as. See how long the Uni's last though:twisted:.
I pay a lot of attention to greasing them often. I had more probs with the front. I had a custom double cardon shaft in the front and it was crap. I have gone to a shortened Rangie front shaft.

The gearing is nut's. Those pics are from the first time i drove it off road. With the diffs a ZF auto and the lowest factory LT230 it just crawls up things.

sorry for the Hijack

I dunno what it is. I got it when I got the auto.

The auto is very nice. Plenty of engine braking downhill and so much control going up with the gearing.

And it will still pull 110km/h on the freeway. I also got 12.5 l/100kms going down to cooma. That was at 90km/h due to the front tailshaft vibrations.

When i got my original pootrol diffs the dickhead wreckers gave me one 4.3 and one 3.9 ratio diff and said they were both 4.1's. Needless to say the transfer wasnt real happy about its new roomates and left with a bang.

They also gave me a front diff housing that was so bent I had to cut the tube off to geth the axle out.

I was going to update the buildup thread but I couldn't be botherd. Might go back and do so or let the thread die a natural death :(

Specs are as follows-

1990 range Rover Vogue SE with all the trimmings and bull****
Stan\dard run of the mill 3.9 EFI, nothing too special there. ZF auto and BW viscous coupling T/case as per all rangies of it's era

What I've done so far-

Front and rear maxi-drive diff locks with 4.11 hardened crown wheel and pinion set (Great Basin Rover jobs)
2 inch Dobinson springs with pro-comp shocks to suit the lift (long-ish without going too stupid).
2 1/2 inch LRA bod lift kit
LRA fiberglass flares
Britpart HD trailing arms, also cranked to suit the 2 inch lift
ARB bullbar with 'aldi' 9500 lb winch. I junked the std solenoid pack for a more reliable contactor pack yet to be fitted (plus the control box is poorly sealed, could be an issue long-term)
ARB rear step with a 'homemade' rear wheel carrier
LRA fiberglass snorkel
Alpine i-pod compatible head unit (better than a stacker IMO, no more damaged CD's shaking around in the console)
16x8 Dynamica steel rims shod with Goodyear MT/R's in a 285/75R16.

Still have to add the HD bash plate (on order) get the exhaust sorted (new rear pipe for now), recover the hood lining and get the air con going for summer.

Now time to go and use/abuse it :twisted::twisted: That's it for now.

Nice work on the vog. You didn't stuff about getting it done:) Mine should be at that stage now:(

Still, I've spent nearly every weekend in 4 1/2 months in the shed to get it up to this stage, also a few hours fater work to get a few 'annoyiing' jobs sorted.

My attitude this time around was to get the vehicle up to a certin stage before I decided to go off-road with it and like I said it's now ready to go, just need a few 'shakedown' trips to get all the bugs (if any) out of it. Going from a Rangie with 33's, lockers and so forth back to stock wasn't my idea of fun :mad:

I also had the $$$ to get it up to that stage first off and that was why it was done in one hit instead of dribs and drabs (although I've blown the budget immensly, but I was expecting that. The poor credit card got a real workout to get it finished ).

Re- tree stump. Most suburban backyards you can barely get a swing set for the kids in let alone a tree stump. I live on a 1/3 acre in the 'burbs and even that's too small for us :(

Justin

Justin, the 285/75's seem to run well on them especially on a 16x8 and they don't rub on the radius arm on fiull lock. I wound back the stops to std and I haven't had an issue and have a decent turning circle again :D

I think a 35x12.5 would be fine on the 15x8 rims. The 285's are about 11.8 inches wide and would still clear pertty well. Plus at $130-140 a rim they're hard to beat pricewise and pretty decent quality for the price (anything is better than those crap ROH/Speedy rims IMO, they're pathetic :eek:) The combo with the MT/Rs they're actually a bit heavier than the Disco rim/Silverstone combo that I had on the blue beast previously. I know the MT/R's are a heavy tyre for a radial but the rims muct have a fair bit of meat in them too.

I feel your pain being the only 'real' coil spriung LR on trips. It's painful not being out on them and having to read about it here (especially the Coffs Harbour trip, missed out on a ripper:mad::mad::mad:) but a few months of pain will pay off over the next 12 months, late 2008-2009 will be trip time again.

Hope the pic works, i'm useless with computers

This is my 2 door i'm fixing up. It is stock as a rock right now, 3.5 carby/ 4 speed. don't know what transfer case or how to find out.

For rego i have to finish the dash swap, fix a oil leak, water leak, exhaust leak find/ get a new set of seat belts and what every else i find.

After rego i'll be swapping in a lpg system, winch bar, 2" spring lift( all from a parts car i'm picking up) putting a set of long shocks all round, some sliders on and maybe a respray. Them making the body of that car into a trailer to take away with me.

The 4 speed is more than likely a LT95, these had the transfer built in/combined where as the later gearboxes being the R380/LT77/ZF Auto was mated to a LT230 transfer case

Hope that makes sense

No digital camera so sorry no picture. As others have posted in December 2008, I thought I will post a description of our RR instead of pictures. I have a white 1990 RR with electric sunroof that leaks, but love sunroofs anyway. The body paintwork is not terrific, but that does not matter when you live in the bush and do not want a showy car. It only has one or two small insignificant dents. The previous RR we owned all had more minor dents. It has the standard 3.9 V8, with a 4 speed auto box. Would have prefered a diesel, but this RR cost only $1500 with 6 months rego and 4 brand new tyres. It will get our 31X7inch Sunraysias with 31 inch tyres from a rusty 2 door wreck that we sold a few years back, if we can sell the vogue alloys with very good Nakang tyres that are currently on it. It has a tubular bull bar [would prefer a ARB winch bar] with a old pair of Cibie Super Oscars on it. We would have prefered a 5 speed box, but this RR was the right price for us. It does need the rear bumper ends replaced, but we hope to sell the rims tyres, then buy a step bumper with swing out wheel carrier that we know about. We have one of those eyebrow shades above the windscreen, our one being mesh, and also have a pair of rollo roof bars. Have a third non-matching, partly homemade roof bar at home, with a roller, that we will put on our RR. We did exchange the rusty rear uper tailgate, with a fairly good one that came with it, someone else getting the glass from the rusty one when they pick it up. We have a rolled wreck, and a going unregisted 1984 at home, that we are trying to sell, so could have pinched a tail gate from ione of these. we changed over tail light lenses, etc. Our 1990 had shot shock-absorbers and standard springs when we got it. The rolled 1985 one had new heavy duty springs and OME shocks, so those springs and the rear OME got put on this1990. One of the front OME shock ends got bent in the roll over so we decided not to risk straitening it, but had a good pair if heavy duty Bilsteins in the shed that we purchased second hand to put on the 1984, so if someone buys the 1984 they will not have good front shocks. We have cracks in our windscreen behind the instrument binickle but will not replace windscreen until things get worst. It has something like a dumbell weight underneath, near the rear of the gearbox that turns and we do not know what that is. It has wires cut to the brakes so it may once have had something like ABS, but do not know how that works. Spent several hours removing a homemade petrol tank breather that spilt petrol on every curve, and putting another hose onto thre original breather--what fun that was. But that sort of fun came free with the $1500 purchase. This RR car had been used by the previous owner to tow a bobcat on a heavy car trailer, so I will not make mention of the fact that the two bar is rated at only 1200KG. That is why in markets I am selling this towbar to replace it with a hayman Reece, in the step bumper I mentioned above. Oh! and we transfered our ROV424 number plates onto it, when I did not find a buyer for our 1984 with these on them. about 4 days a week from lunchtime on you may see it at Coolongatta Beach if you are up on holidays, and so you will park your Series 3 discovery at the other end of the block, so yours will not be linked to such a Landrover as our pride and joy RR. My son is an apprentice Welder, at Coolongatta.

The fuel pump and computer went to god when I was on fraser. So I just wanted a reliable set up on fuel. The gas system works fine but the afm flapper type was giving me greef so I ditched it and put a custom throttle body on to go with the haltech. New injectors and a tune and now have a great reliable set up. Plus If I ever want to upgrade to more power the fuel pump and injectors are good for about 400hp. The motorways were cheap so thought Id give them a run as for flares when I go bigger rubber will look into them.

What are those tyres. I called vic roads and parks vic and found it was legal for me to put real tractor tyres on my 4x4 and go off road, I also found a place to put good used ones on for $160 ea. But then I discovered they blow out at prolonged use at speeds anything over 40kph so they got ruled out.

Here is mine in its current standard state. Once the readdies have been accumulated, the plan is for the following to be done:

- change to 24 spline axles and strong CVs (Ashcroft??)
- locker diffs
- suspension change (more articulation than lift, although will probably need to be 2 inches above standard) including new trailing arms, etc
- refresh LT77 and LT230 with new bearings, gaskets, etc (would like a R380 if I can find one for right price)
- tidy up the interior (sagging headliner and retrim seats)
- cut the guards and fit flares
- fit 33 inch tyres
- refresh the brakes (new discs and replace calipers)
- replace long range sill tanks with rock sliders
- finally, fit a 4.6 motor.

But the Blue Beast goes well none the less for a toy.

Haha, nah, my mate was hopeless, the thing was so gutless, I used it to tow a tandem, 9x5, with a falcon shell to the scrap, it wouldn;t go over 60km/hr, but he'd just rev it in the bush:D

No decorum:twisted:

Well in the time I owned my RRC, I never broke an axel, diff or CV. All I did was control the right foot and use the power in appropriate moments. If it aint going up a hill, use a different line. Putting foot to floor will break *****.

Yea, but I had an endless supply of centres and axles for him, so bust it, limp it home, change it and back out there in an hour or so:D occasionally weld up the housing where it spat out:eek:

Here are two RRC's I used to have...
(1) The very 80's stylish 2-tone blue RRC was a 1984 4-door, 3.5 V8 with Holley 450 carb. Fell in love with this car when I saw/drove it and traded in my wife's Commodore so I could get it. Don't think she ever forgave me.
Seem to remember this car having really heavy steering and a distinct lack of power. The head gasket went and it had lots of little problems. Traded it in on a new Astra for my wife in 2000.
(Judging by the small child in the front of the pic, I guess this must have been about 10 years ago. The "small child" is now 19 and wants a Rangie of his own - but will have to settle for a Sierra until he gets a full licence.)

(2) The burgundy beast playing in the mud at Winmalee (Blue Mtns) is a 1987 Hiline 3.5 V8 EFI. Great car when it was running, but seemed to have endless cooling problems, even after the head gasket was done.
It handled great on and off road, and power was a big improvement over the carby model. However, I recall being overtaken on the M4 by a P38A like I was standing still. Traded this in on a Freelander (what was I thinking? something about better fuel economy?) which I kept for about a year and then got bitten by the P38A bug.

Cheers, Paul.

Founds a few pics of my previous Range Rovers. Forgot that I've had that many in 12 odd years of ownership  I'll try and load the pics in order of the description

76 2 door (white) A good start off Rangie even if it was rotten to the core with rust I found out later on, had 31' re-tread tyres on as I was an apprentice I couldn't afford new ones. I fitted a CIG locker in the back I got donated by somebody in the club years ago after breaking the std one at Mt Mee (when they're was good track in there, it's a limp dick place now :mad:). Was a rust bucket and it had overheating issues even after doing the heads and radiator. Gave it a hiding and broke 3 axles in one day at the G;lasshouse Mtns (traded it in with a busted axle 2 weeks later on....)

84 4 door auto (chrysler 3 speed, Silver). Great Rangie, had a maxi-drive rear diff lock and whilts it was GUTLESS, it was still a great Rangie. Had 30x9.5R15 Firestone RMT's on, damn good tyres at the time (and cheap) and was pretty damn reliable overall. Thgis is a Rangie I should have hung onto but the gutless performance was really annoying me so I traded it in and bought a Disco. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!

93 Vogue Plus- The infamous Aquarangie (called it that due to the Aqua-ish colour and the fact I droewned it a couple of times on trips). Still the best Rangie I have owned to date, traded the Disco in on it (actually 'back traded' as the Rangie was 7 montyhs older than the Disco). Had air suspension and ABS brakes but overall I had it for 4 years and even the punishment I gave it I couldn't fault it, started firtst time every time. The rollover killed it sadly and that's was the end of it :(:(:(

83 Rangie- This was a lemon of a Rangie. I bought it after the aquarangie as I wanted to go back to basics, had a 4.4 and 4 speed. As per most 4.4's it overheater constantly and spent well over a grand trying to get it to run cool off-road (on road is okay, stick in low and watch the temp climb :mad:) it was a constant battle of overheating, rust and worn out crap that did my head in and after 12 months I got rid of it.

The last 4 inc. the current one well you know about them as I have documented them on here vin other sections. had about 4 that I have stripped for parts since.

It was converted to auto by Leyland as the VIN shows it to be a 4 speed manual.

Would have been the first approved by Leyland at the time as Ritters and off-road automatics (I think that's who they were in Sydney) had been doing them for years beforehand.

I prefer the Ritters C4 auto conversion myself, more professional and a bit more like it was factory fitted to me (the BW ones are a bit of a laugh with a massive main shaft going through the void in the gearbox to the LT95 transfer. I pulled one apart once and discocverd this).

Regardless, they were both gutless and needed a decent motor up front to begin with (the 4.4/C4 combo seemed to work well, I drove once and was pretty impressed compared to the gutless 3.5 variant at the time).

Noel from Ritters told me that their conversion was a LRA option at the time ('81) so they weren't individually engineered. He was around back then and had to check to give me the info.

This was important for notification when I was putting my POS together because fitting an auto to a previously manual vehicle only involves filling out a form for Vicroads if the auto was a factory option.

The insurance company were more interested in the colour change (was the whole body in reality) than the auto.

I was up there on the weekend, and have a pic of my little Suzuki Sierra parked in about the same spot - although not taking up as much space as your Rangie :)

It's a disgrace what the vandals and hoons have done to the place... broken glass all over the ground and graffiti on the tower. The authorities have now put razor wire on the ladder cage, legs and balcony of the tower to prevent the vandals from doing more damage.

Cheers, Paul.

No breakages so far;). I believe it required 1.5" spacers as the 60 diffs were quite a bit narrower.

Not much been done. Just trying to fix everyone else's crap on it and get it to the "reliable" stage, i.e. I stop wondering when it will break down! Actually, it's probably not that bad but it's been parked up more than it has been on the road lately.

Slowly getting there though.

* 2" lift on it (Lovells)
* LPG
* 3.5 V8 apprently on a Disco block.
* 15 x 7 Performance Ind rims (I need another one for the spare if anyone has one floating about?!)

Plenty of things to do:

* replace windscreen seal to stop the rain from dropping on my knees
* get the demister to actually work
* get the heater to actually turn off
* replace shocks
* fix the terrible wobble and steering wheel shakes which come and go
* convert to EFI for the gas that installed but which doesn't really like the twin carb setup
* internal roll cage
* body lift and 33's
* replace roof which has hail damage upt o 3cm deep!!
* whatever else I can do and am allowed to spend money on... (yep, married!)

Yep, this one's a keeper. Even the wife likes it at times!

I had a LR mech tell me to get rid of it, it's not worth the effort but how many 2 doors do you see around? Not many and I reckon they are the best looking ones anyway! They must be, they modelled the Sport on them!

Whats the benefit in having the snorkel intake facing backwards. I have one which has the plastic intake that can be rotated, but also have one which is fixed and faces backwards. I'm going to be fitting one to mine in the coming weeks pre Cape York and wondering which is most suitable
