OK so here's a long question...

1. What's the process ?

2. Aside from spanners etc and hub nut spanner thingy, are there any special tols I'll need ?

3. Aside from pads and rotors, do I need any other 'bits' or consumables ?
(for example, do I need to repack bearings etc when I put the hubs back on ? If so, how ?

I reckon I'll have a crack at (just about) anything now !
(saving money, you see!)

I have tomorrow off so thought I might tackle it then or on the weekend.

If you're doing the rotors, then you'll have the bearings out, so better to repack them, and probably replace the seals at the same time, check this out for the one page instructions -
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/49063-broken-wheek-stud.html

EDIT Sorry, halfway there. You'll need gasketty stuff for the drive flange, new split pins for the pins in the brake caliper, cleaning things for grease and brake cleaner, umm, umm, umm.

If you pull off the end caps of the drive flange it should give you a good idea of how much needs to be done - if it's all dry and muddy you might need to replace bearings as well.

Just learned this one last week - To grease the bearings, get a walnut sized ball of grease in your palm, hold the bearing with your fingers hooked through the middle, and drag the edge of the bearing through the grease. Keep doing it in one spot on the bearing until grease starts coming out the other/top side of the bearing, then turn it a bit and drag across your palm again. This way you can see that the entire bearing race is filled with grease.

GGF !

I just need someone to watch me / help in case of major screw up / offer advice and I'll be OK. This goes with anything from an oil change to brain surgery.

if you can hold off doing it till a friday arvo or better yet a sunday I can make a time slot available so that you have some options

1. we can do it at work (want to avoid that ATM Im stretching the friendship with 3 civvie rovers on base)
2. do it at my place
3. I can come down and do it at your place
4. at least I can be near a phone or in an area with reception if you need instant help.

You will also need a seal placing tool if your going to replace the seals, the bearings or just pull them out and regrease them, I can get my hands on one for you if you need it.

Thanks mate, another friend has offered to help me too, so i should be right but thanks for the offer and I MAY take it up depending on his other comittments.

As to the seal placing tool - he has one of those too - but what are they exactly (eg a special LR tool, model # ?) and how much are they worth to buy ?

Cheers peoples. :)

Rotora have been machined many times to within an inch (well a few mm) of their life. Definitely replacement time.
