I have two problems that I need advice on-
1. I replaced the two rear brake pads about six weeks ago, and absent-mindedly threw out the pieces of thin metal that were on the back of the existing brake pads (I believe they are called squeal plates). They were fine for 4 weeks but now the new brake pads are making some deep squealing noises. Is this because i did not put the pieces of metal on the new pads? If so, can you buy just those pieces of metal by themselves?

2. Starting to find it tough to get the defender into reverse, and fourth gears mainly, what should I be looking at first? Is the clutch going? It certainly seems to be clunking and grating a bit more when trying to get it into gear sometimes.

Thanks for your time and help, Jamie Luck

1. Anti-squeal shims, probably a dealer only item.
2. Check the clutch hydraulics, sounds like the clutch is dragging, or too little oil or too thick an oil in the gearbox.

which pads did you install?

I have heard of problems with none Genuine pads squealing - to the point it can give the same impression as the ABS sensor is failing, as it can produce the same frequency to the sensor!!!

There is some anti-squeal goo you can buy that you put on the back of the pads where the caliper pistons push on them - the pads would need to come back out. The goo is designed to absorb and dampen the vibrations that cause the squealing.
