Hmmm, I sprayed one of the millions of spiders in my house last night, and it seemed to have vanished. I just assumed that it had run away to hide and die.

Well, tonight I've worked out what's going on... I think. Feed Simba, my faithful friend some left over deserts and bingo, there vanishes another dead spider! It seems that Simba has taken to eating spiders!!! :o

Well, she's just curled up for a sleep now. Fingers crossed that she doesn't need the defibrillators in the morning. Please tell me that dead spiders are not doggie toxic. :(

The spider ipse is not dangerously toxic to dogs. If the spider was carrying pyrethrum when it died, which if it was sprayed would most likely be the cause of death, then traces of the pyrethrum may enter the dog. But its toxicity is very low and shouldn't present a hazard.

If the base was anything other than pyrethrum, then the level of toxicity may be greater and might be a cause for concern. So work out what insecticide it is first.

:lol2:

Like the brave dog she it, she'll chase down a cat with all of the bravado that an old Samoyed can muster... right up until the cat pulls up and calls her bluff. Then poor old simba doesn't know what to do, so she gets as close as she dares..... and just stares at the cat. :no2:

Thanks for this Joel,

The spider was sprayed with Mortein.

The active constituants areBioallethrin and Bioresmethrin. I'm not really sure what exactly they are.

I'm jusst watching her at the moment and shes half sleeping, but still moving around a bit. I'm sort of hoping that at worst she might get a bit of a stomach ache or a vomit.

Sleep easy...

Bioresmethrin LD50 >3000mg/kg.
Allethrin LD50 1100 mg/kg.

I'm guessing a dog like that weighs at least 35 kg, it'd take a **** load to be life threatening.

My Jack Russell, Georgie, eats anything that moves.
I get up in the morning and find Rats, Rabbits, Possums and Foxes at the doorstep. No Snakes yet!!!!

Ahhh, cool! Thanks for this Joel!

In the the 250g can, there is 2.1g/kg of Bioallethrin and .4g/kg of Bioresmethrin, so a bit of spray should be miles of for her.

I agree, but LD50 is only measuring toxicity in mice, not dogs.

I looked it up in a Monash textbook, it was for rabbits.

So

Hows the big white bloody fluffball?

Doggies generally will not eat anything too bad for them.

I know the dog eats better than you so if he's eating spiders, what are you eating?

She's good. Fighting fit this morning... well, at least this afternoon. She's the only living thing that hates mornings more than me. :D

Yeah, Simba's on domestic spiders, and I've just rediscovered roadkill! :( Actually, I've just been visiting the apple farms down the road and enjoying the seasons unadulterated best!

Hey thanks Ken, you're right! This was nothing the calibre of when she decided to have a sip of some glycol coolant. That was a night in the 24hr vets and a night I wont forget in a rush. She was ok, but dogs not like a cat with 9 lives.

I remember a few years back, I thought our Shepherd had eaten snail bait. So rang the vet & he said to give him mega amounts of very salty water asap to make him vomit. Do you know how hard it is to get a German Shepherd to drink copious amounts of salt water? It was not a pretty sight! Poor dog had no idea what the hell was going on. I felt so bad:o

Permethrin specifically (but other synthetic pyrethroids as well) is almost harmless to dogs and people, but quite harmful to cats.

Lots of DOG flea powders contain permethrin etc... And people have accidentally killed their cat by flea-treating their dog...

(glad to hear the pooch is ok)

Must be the time of year for creepy crawlies. Our back yard has been invaded by hundreds of furry caterpillars, crawling along the back verandah, in Erich's shed and they are even crawling around the edge of the swimming pool. Some moth must have laid mega eggs and the whole lot hatched out at once:mad:

Thank goodness Cougar, our Staffy, doesn't seem to be interested in eating them.

We're squishing as many as we can as they can cause severe rashes and itching if touched.

Haven't seen many spiders (thank goodness).

Hope Simba keeps well Simon, she's a lovely old girl.

That's what I thought too when I clicked onto it, expecting to hear Simba's been eated by a spider :eek::eek: I'm imagining some huge alien type spider with 12 legs & fangs. :D:D

Thats interesting, I had to spray for caterpillers about 4 weeks ago also. Everything was clean and then all of a sudden they were everywhere! They were knocked out with only one spray but a real surprise. Thats good that Cougar leaves them alone though, they sound like the Spitfires.

Simbas keeping well Sheila. Shes had a rough trot though. She has had a huge (as like huge huge) cancer removed from her Liver. There was also a lump on her stomach that came out too and the scans have shown something in her lung which is still there - they have got no idea what that is. The stomach lump was benign and a break away cell from the spleen, the big one on her liver was a carcinoma. The vet thinks it has come out complete and neatly but time will tell if it has spread. The scans come up clean except for the thing in her lung, but that hasn't changed between scans. Honestly, she is like a new dog these days, shes all over the place, up and down like a yoyo, just looks really happy again, sleeps right through the night and is generally a lot more comfortable again. Actually today, for the first time in years she was able to jump her front legs into the car (not the Disco) without falling over.

Considering there were heaps of flies and about 10 thong-wearing adults all trying to outdo each other

Fixed it for you - I assume you didn't mean footwear!

We spent hours one day while out on a camping weekend killing those huge horse flies :(

We made a big pile of them. Considering there were heaps of flies and about 10 thong wielding/wearing adults all trying to outdo each other, there was quite a pile

Our border collie decided to make a meal of the whole lot :D:D

I also seem to remember that Siska, while she ate them, she wasn't as keen on digesting them.

I don't wear thongs either ;);) (bad mental picture there )
