Speedo Cable Location

Hi Gang,
I am now ready to install the speedo cable. Does anyone know where it goes after it leaves the rear of the transfer box and what fixings it should have.
The manuals don't show it and I have searched the internet and found nothing.

It runs across to the LH chassis rail then along the top (there's a clip to secure it there, if it's gone the hole will still be there) then across the top of the bellhousing, up behind engine, into the back of the dash to the speedo head. Try to keep all turns as gentle as possible, ie: no less than 6inch radius. Every year or so I pull out the inner cable and lightly grease it, seems to extend its life.

Thanks for that dandy , might need to go a little different path as i have the series 3 cable and is a lot longer . Any ideas where to run it so that the cable isn't all over the engine bay ?:)

If you grease it, as suggested in an earlier post on this thread, don't make the mistake I did.
The only grease I had handy at the time was some heavy, old fashioned wheel bearing grease.

It seemed to create so much drag that the needle fluctuated. I checked for tight turns and other possible causes, but found nothing.

When I cleaned some of it out and replaced it with lighter grease, it improved.

As said before "a light grease" with a light grease seems to be the go.

Lithium grease is a good long lasting type, it is the type used on door window regulators, door hinges and locks. It also comes in a spray can if preferred.

I swear by lanolin oil, remove the inner cable ,drop the bottom end off the tcase and just pour it in. when it drips out the bottom, slide the cable back in after giving it a spray.

Vaseline is the prefered lubrication for cables, an instrument fitter told me that grease can work its way up the worn drive and into the speedo head itself

I have the same problem - just have a loop over under the LH floor supported at the two places it crosses the chassis rail. Just make sure it can't go anywhere near the exhaust.
