G'day All,
Ok I have my eye on a 03 D2 TD5, 7 seater with 83000 km's. It is a stocker, never been off road and whoo hoo has 16inch rims ( ie my D3 had 18's and not much choice). Now my question is what is the rim specs for the 16's and what type of tyre sizes would suit with it being a stocker ( eventually will be lifted, chipped etc). Would like to have either BFG MT's or even their new AT's or perhaps other suggestions. Reason I ask is if I go ahead with this one, would get them to change tyres first and have it included in the price as opposed to the stock tyres they have on at the moment. Thanks in advance for advice/ tips,
Regards

Stevo,
You will get 265 x 75 x 16's on.
They will rub slightly however when you lift it they won't rub any more.
A heap of the guys on the D2au site run these tires.
Be aware though that these tyres may be to big to be strictly legal as the new legislation talks about tyres only being 50mm bigger than the biggest stock tyre.

Yep, 265/75R16 seems to be generally regarded as the best fit for a D2 with a small lift. Also if and when you lift it, I have a complete set of 40mm OME springs if you want to get something on it quick. Happy to help you fit them plus can help you fit a washer to your steering stops as you will get slight rubbing at full lock. Of course you could go straight to 33"tyres like mine which are on a 40mm lift, but not ideal for a daily driver.

Steveo,
The rims will either be 16 x 7(235/70/16), 16 x 8(255/65/16) or 18 x 8(255/55/18) as these are the std rims fitted to the d2.
As the guys have said & also on my D2 we run 265/75/16's,(I did run 235/85/16's on my Simpson trip but then thought thewider tyres were better) which fills the arches nicely. You may need to fit a B/Bar as if u dont you may get some rubbing on the wheel arch liners, the steering stops will also need to be adjusted out with washers to help stop rubbing too.
Good luck & let the fun begin:D

Ok a question in relation to lifts. Just got an email back from a bloke whom I was asking whether the D2 he had for sale was a 5 or 7 seater...was hoping 7 as it had all the work already done. He reckons that you can't put a lift kit under a 7 seater as suspension is different. Im assuming lift kit is a lift? I know the one Im looking at has coils upfront and SLS at rear. Is there an issue? Thanks,

Short answer....thats Rubbish!! He may be referring to the fact that its a air bag rear, but even this can be lifted with some blocks from 4x4intelligence.com.
I dont think he really knows what can be done with a disco...

Steveo,
Contact Simon at 4x4Discovery.com.au - "think outside ..." (http://www.4x4intelligence.com.au)
They have lift kits for the SLS version of the D2.
They have a full kit of springs/shockers-front & spacers/shockers for the rear.
If u dont adjust the rear air spring the vehicle sits down at the rear, if u adjust the height sensor u are running the air springs at a higher rate than normal, which in turn causes failure.
The spacer sits in between the air spring & mount giving the vehilce a normal ride height & putting the correct amount of pressure into the air spring & letting it do its proper job.
Cheers:)

you can get over-length bags,, which give 3" more travel. Using a block at the rear partly solves the longer overhang of the D2, but doesnt increase articulation.

Stevo, there are a couple of guys up this way who have modified their SLS as you intend to. As already said though, it can be done fairly easily.

Thanks again for the advice etc, so say until you got a lift, how much rub would there be with the 265/75/R16's ie would it be very noticeable or hardly, as it maybe a while before I get the lift but if I can I want to get a change over of tyres when and if I buy it, thanks,

Hi Stevo
Last time I check QLD legislation it was 15mm not 50 - so the tyres discussed here are all way over size - make sure you OK it with the insurance at least. If it were me I would get it blue plated else you'll go a row if anything series goes wrong... Sorry I know people don't want to here legalities...

Mick,
I have a 03 d2 with 2" Kings - Will 255/85/16's fit - I was assuming I would need a body lift to get 33" tyres on?

Stevo
I live in QLD and own a 03 D2 TD5 and have been looking at changing tyres, I brought the vehicle with factory tyres 235/70 R 16 fitted and also want to increase my tyre size. After speaking to dealers and looking at the QLD transport web site as well as ADR's the largest increase I can go to in QLD is 15mm which means the next size up of 245/70 R 16 (or any other combo that allows a 15mm hight increase). I have read that if down south either NSW or VIC "off road passanger vehicles" can be fitted with upto 50mm increase in size. This info was from both the VIC Roads web site and also on ADR's under vehicle modification.
In regards to tyres selection I have been looking into that as well and am considering the "General Grabber AT2's" they are made in the US and seem to have a good write up. I also have a good web site that might help in tyres selection.
Consumer Survey Results By Category (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp'type=ORAT)
Hope this helps, if anybody know of a way around the QLD tyre size increase please let us know.
Good luck with the car, love mine and am now a Land Rover convert
