MAX EGT temps?? whats the limit?

so for a TD5 what is the upper limit for cylinder temps?
and for how long should they be run??

gotta tow a RRC up to gloster on friday.

Post or pre turbo, wheres the EGT sensor located?

post turbo generally about 650deg C is the outside limit and you dont want to hang around there for long but you can push 600 all day if you need to but you wont be doing your fuel economy any favors.

pre turbo will dpend on how effecient your particular turbo is. ITs always hotter pre turbo by anything from 20-200 degrees depending on how much gas flow your getting and how much back pressure your system generates.

Id tip not wanting to be over 750 pre turbo.

the softening point for the hardening of the TD5 is around the 1000 degree mark Im not sure about the tdi's but I cant imagine it being much different. Remeber thats the temp inside the combustion chamber while its still going bang and not whats turning up at the exhaust.

1000 degrees on your exhaust is probabley a very very bad thing.

Most everything I've read states 720*C pre-turbo as a reliable, safe maximum in any turbo diesel.
I've seen upwards of 735-740* a few times, but only for a second or so.

thanks fellas, my TC is in no1 cylinder exhaust and a bit of no2. fitted to where the old egr pipe came from.

now its just a case of how stable a 90 is towing 3+ ton:eek:

I used to blow 2 strokes with an EGT between 970-1050 at 50mm along the exhaust flange, so probably 80mm from the CC.

as in blow them up or blow as in supercharged/turbo charged?..

a good old remade cast iron engine will tolerate very high exhaust temps for very brief periods.

Hmmm, you're right about the interpretation.

Blow as in seize (melt the piston to the bore). They were full alloy except the bore which was iron.

I run my Isuzu at up to 750 without any issues so far.
The occasional excursion past, but only temporary.
