Hi All,
Well after a delay, I have finally collected the D2! My lord - never ever will I be sitting in my proton xls again *lol*... It's amazing what birds eye view I have been missing out on and I love the V8!!

but onto my Q's as I have a few.

--------
TOWBAR - pls refer to pic towbar.jpg
--------

The D2 has a towbar @ the rear. I have looked on HaymanReese website and believe it is similar to the Hitch Receiver and something similar to the hitch pin lock. It has a "landrover' badged cap where I guess the towball/bar (not sure of the terminology here - the long bit with the ball on the end!!) sits inside.

Q.
I don't know what manufacturer make/model/weight this will take. Any pointers on where this may be located?

I don't have the towball bit at all so the above will help me to know what it is so I can get one. I've uploaded a pic, that may make it easier. Perhaps by first glance some of you may know already what make/manufacture it is? Otherwise, happy to go clambering under the rear to find info :-)

--------
Towbar Wiring
--------
I've always been use to seeing the older round wiring bit that you plug the trailer etc in2, however this one is marked with '7' in a circle and the text LUMEN underneath, with the plug end of the wiring being rectangular etc.

Q.
Any ideas where one can purchase the wiring bit that plugs into the towbar>trailer etc? How much do they normally retail for? Can you pick them up from a wreckers or would it be best to buy new? It it a particular make I need to ask for? Male>female connectore here. I have absolutely no idea!

------------
Repair Cracked Plastic seal - pls refer to splitseal.jpg
------------

Q. Any pointers on a excellent strength adhesive so I can glue together the plastic seal that is a little split? (This is on the LHS top where the plastic seal starts to go around the bootdoor - again not sure of the terminology here)

------------
Repair / servicing / maintenance manual
------------

My D2 is a - DISCOVERY II 00.5MY 2000. Any pointers on where one can obtain a repair manual from so hubby/I can do any repair / servicing / maintenance work etc? Any pointers on what's the best one to buy out there and how much they go for? Also, would this manual include operation of all the buttons on the dash! I have no idea what some of them do or how to engage them to work!!

------------
Spare Parts
------------
I have a few things I would like get. Any pointers or links to purchase these items, either second hand/new or any wreckers in Melbourne that specialise in Landrover parts?

1. LHS rear tail light that has a small broken piece missing from the bottom RHS corner. Is the rear taillight one piece or is it 2 pieces?

2. Side steps - any ideas what ones are good, not fussed whethr they are silver in colour or black. Not sure if they came with standard ones as aftermarket product? Is there any special holes to factor in when fitting, any brands etc you could recommend?

3. On the LHS where you have the plastic moulding that curves around the rear side panel that sits ontop of the bumperstep looks like it's missing one clip that it clips into so it sits flush against the panel. Not sure what you call it, but is there a specific clip/screw etc that I need to ask for?

4. On the inside, I think I am missing the panel that sits on the console at the bottom, maybe it is meant to have a picture of the gears and how they work when in 4wd mode?

---------
Airbag Modules Replacement
-----------

I have in the service portfolio/owner info booklet a replacement date for the airbag modules. Any ideas on how much something like this would cost and is it mandatory to get them replaced?

-------------------------

Very long winded I know, hopefully you folk can bestow some of your knowledge upon a newbie!!

Many thanks,

Lolla

Phew...take a breath landyprincess :D and welcome aboard.

Your towbar is the standard LR supplied and is rated to tow up to 3500 kg. All very strong and you will not have any problems with it.

The tongue, that is the 'long bit with the ball on the end' can be picked up from any tow bar manufacturer OR you can get the OEM one from LR for about $150. This kit from LR includes the wiring so if you want to rewire to make it all original you could. The problem you may have with the non LR tongue is to ensure you have the drop the right height. It can be difficult to get it right.

Your wiring is only a generic 7 pin flat plug that is available everywhere. You can now even get adapters pre made so you can change from flat to round, 7 to 5 pin ect so just pop down to Supercheap as they have a good range.

The manual can be purchased from here and it supports this magnificent site. Just click the link and order away. They are brilliant.

The airbags were rated to be changed at 10 years. Since then I believe there is a LR Service Bulletin that has pushed this out to 15 years.

Hayman Reece tongue will fit, MAX weight over the ball or downward pressure is 250KG and max weight you can tow is 3.500KG.

Don't know where you are in Melb, but fwiw...

AMV, 515 Maroondah Hwy, Ringwood, 98709904, Peter, Greg or Luke.
If you're not sure of what "that thingo" is, take the car. New and used.

Worth checking out Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide, too. Got a brand new website. Good people, a bit xxxxy, but great service and delivery. Talk to Phil 08 83846933.

I declare NO ASSOCIATION with either of these groups - I've just had good dealings with them.

The best side steps I've come across are the ARB steps - these are made of steel tubing with aluminium checker plate on the steps.

Steer clear of the plastic or moulded aluminium ones - some of them look nice, but they can't handle any sort of impact and will either bend or break very easily.

Also, some of the steps available require that you remove the black plastic sill guards below the doors on the Disco. These look like crap when fitted, as they do not properly fill the gap left where the original sill guards were.

Once you recieve the CD either burn a copy or keep it in the vehicle.
It will be a godsend if you have a breakdown and the nearby mechanic needs more info.
Just hope he has a computer.

Hi LandyAndy

The CD is fantastic! Thanks so much for making all that info available. I've learnt a few things about the D2 (and much more I am sure) that I otherwise would have still been scratching my head perplexed at. I see where it gets the RAVE name from, can't rave enough about all the useful info !!! Hubby had a spare tow hitch/ball which believe it or not does fit so I will measure it all up to see that it 'complies' with the addendum bit on the D2 manual. (spare bits off hubby's 'anchor' may come in handy after all - shock horror - hahah). I've already burnt a 'backup cd' incase anything happens to this one and have that stashed away and as technology is such a
grand thing these days have saved a copy of the doc to my SD card and can view that on my IPAQ (or anyone else for that matter - i'm a techno geek too hahah and love my little gadgets!!) I may just keep a 'printed' copy spare in the D2 somewhere also...

Hi twigrx7
funnily enough most of whom I see driving landrovers (melbourne here) whether they be the Td5, V8, V8i, SE etc seem to be female with the odd bloke!! As for the pic - not at the mo. Just stock standard at present with dreams of doing some things in the future...

Cheers

The little plastic elbow on the rear of your car is very cheap to replace as I just replaced one myself and it just clips in place. May even be cheaper that a tube of super glue from memory.

Not sure of any places near by you but Rick's 4x4 here on the gold coast can get you one 07 5596 6662. Ask for Alan if you call.

I have no association with Rick's other than he does all my repairs and servicing and only works on LR's.

Also, I have the same 7 pin rectangular tow electrics and hitch receiver and bought from Autobarn an adjustable "trailer ball mount" for $149. This gives me the advantage of height adjustment so when the bike rack is fitted I raise it up 75mm (undo two bolts). Gives beter departure angle.

The adapter cables are at any auto shop (to go from rectangular to round) try Autobarn/Supercheap/Repco etc.

Dont be worried if you have to replace the whole taillight, (LHS is part no. XFB000170 or ..170P for non OEM) look on the web and you'll find plenty, even new you can get them for about GBP $22.50 from Rimmer Bros in the UK. http://rimmerbros.richfx.com.edgesuite.net/catalog/media/discovery2/ This is a good catalogue and worth browsing even just to get the part numbers before doing other searches.

happy motoring

Thanks for all the replies and help - much appreciated. Sorry for the late reply. #2 on the way in 5 weeks and running around after #1 (albeit very slowly lol) has been keeping me busy & away from the puter ...

My last question - Does anyone know of any mechanics around the Mornington Peninsula / Frankston area in VIC that can service my D2? I'm about 4K away from the 228k's for my next service based on the sticker on the windshield. I've noticed the manual gear gets a little stuck first thing in the morning (if it's been cold, seems to be fine when it's warmed up) and has only done it twice now where it has 'slipped' out of gear.

Not sure if it's me or something starting to go askew with the gears / clutch plate / gearbox (hopefully not the latter) and want someone who can check that out for me as well as service it... and tell me what's what with it if anything else needs attention with it.

Thanks,

Lolla

(ps - I know I still need to post a pic of my D2!!)

Actually, to be honest - none! You can claim first to that one. How special... *chuckle*... I think the extra 'L' has thrown them off. Intentionally done though *ROFL* :p
