Hey everyone,
Ive got a 76 2door rangie with a 4.4, done all the work myself, i'll post photos asap. i went out over the past weekend and blew the rear diff. NOW i have 2 choices i can replace the original diff or as i have been instructed i can buy the defender diff and shorten the tail shaft. with this i plan on getting the arb locker as well. Strength is what im aiming for.
Your thoughts?
Thanks

Thats fine if you want an anchor under the back. Have you considered other options?

maxi drive is not an option as they are out of business, and i want something i bit stronger so that an ARB would work without failing. i mean i can fix the problem i have cheaply but im looking for a long tearm fix with strength. The anchor thing are they that much heavier??? i mean my car is reletivley light as it is...

The sals hangs down much lower, as its a bigger diff AND being a back loader, the cast housing is a grader blade
I'll have a standard centre to get you going again, for a slab of Melbourne stubbies, if you in Vic somewhere close

Personally, I;d just fit an sirlocker to the rover centre with Hituff (maxi) Jacmac axles and be done with it;)

I'll second that. I've put sals under Rangies on 33s and Rover diff Maxied on 750x16 went round it;)

I'd be doing the same also (and did). The diff isn't renowned for being strong but the locker and axles make a big big difference to the strength. The Salisbury on 31/32" tyres gives the same clearance as a Rover diff on 29's. A rover diff on 33's doesnt touch the ground often, a salisbury diff on 33's drags.

It's an ARB Airlocker from an ARB dealer.
Maxi closed and Hi-Tough axles now manufacture the same axles. Probably even the same fella doing them.

i am having the same trouble with blowing up the rear diff in a 88 rangie, 3.5 efi, 33x12.5x15 mtr. i have fitted 4.1's with an ARB air locker. the air locker has stop blowing up the diff centers, but now i am pulling teeth off the crown wheel. have found a company on the net from the UK - KAM. They look to make a range of diff ratio's & claim to be strong. does anyone know anything about this company & they products?

I run KAM 4.11s, they're reputedly the strongest aftermarket gearsets available for rover, and I haven't broken one yet

I tend to think that if you're breaking rover CW/P then it's time to look at a different type of diff for reliability. eg Salisbury, Toy 8" conversion, Landcruiser, Patrol etc.

If they're other 4.1 or 4.11's they will break;)

As in Rover type 4.1 and 4.11 that are not KAM?
I run Dana 4.11 onto Rover ARB lockers and they've been pretty good, but I have heard of and seen others break, notably 4.1

Yep, When I bought mine many moons before I had the Interweb, I was talking to guys at winch challenges etc, that have run most and these were the go, backin the day
